Yes last nights win showcased everything that is right with our Beloved New York Mets. Yes Mike Pelfrey- after a shaky start settled down and pitched one hell of a game. Yes Jose Reyes has showed why he is the best lead-off man in the game today.Yes it appears that Carlos Beltran might be finally getting his legs back under him and David Wright has broken out of his slump. Yes so far it appears that Bobby Parnell = with his triple digit fastball might be the heir apparent to Frankie Rodriguez’s closer role .And although I am elated with last nights cathartic victory, I have a word of advice to G.M. Omar Minaya, DON’T YOU EVEN THINK ABOUT SIGNING JERRY MANUEL TO A CONTRACT EXTENTION !!
Let us get back to reality here. We faced Jeff Karstens and the 40-81 Pittsburgh Pirates last night ! We were playing a AAAA team at best. We should have steamrolled them last night ! Let’s face it , if you had batted Chris Carter cleanup against almost any other team in this league the outcome would have been very different. And don’t get me wrong , I like ” the animal” – but let’s face the facts , he’s a fringe player at best. I know that Jerry Manuel as of late hasn’t had much to work with froman offensive standpoint. The bats have been as cold as cold can be, and until last night this team hadn’t scored over five runs for the entire month of August. There is no doubt in my mind that Jerry is a good man, it is obvious that he is well liked by the players on this team and they try to play hard for him. But Jerry is in my opinion a very poor in game tactical manager. It seems like whenever he goes with his gut – it backfires on him, he loves to sacrifice early in the game, and alot of times the perception is that he plays for the tying run – and not the winning run when the Mets are down late in the game.
This team needs focus and direction, not passive aggressive press conference that turns into a bad stand up routine at tickles night club. I am confident that the Mets will win their first road series this weekend, and this team should barely finish above .500. But Jerry should for now on be known as ” Dead Manuel Walking” because he doesn’t deserve to be back as manager next season.
” I don’t think Gandhi ever won a ball game Jerry !”
And With That said…. HERE COMES THE INFAMY !!!!
Today would have been the 71st birthday of Mets backup first baseman/outfielder from ’72- ’73,Jim Beauchamp (1939) .
The glue of the Mets infield throughout the ’70′s. Felix “ The Cat”Millan is 67 (1943).
One of the main reason to come to Shea Stadium during the late “70′s – early ’80′s, John Stearns is 59 (1951).
The forgotten pitcher of the mid ’80′s Mets rotations – Bruce Berenyi is 56 (1954) .Bruce was the Rick Reed of his day. He was not a power pitcher, but he had good enough stuff to win games for a up and coming Mets team.
And lastly, Mo Vaughn has started his own charitable foundation. He has named it “The Mo Vaughn No Sandwich Left Behind Foundation “.

oh and as per Martino of the daily news
You probably don’t know the name Marti Wolever, but scouting and front office-types do. As the scouting director for the Philadelphia Phillies, Wolever shared in Baseball America’s Organization of the Year Award in 2009. Phils GM Ruben Amaro Jr. often goes out of his way to credit Wolever for the team’s success, and Wolever has a sterling reputation in the industry.
Well, there was a published report in Philadelphia recently linking Wolever to the Mets, which created a good deal of blog activity there. But a source said that the Mets had not and likely will not speak to Wolever, now or in the offseason. They respect him but have not considered interviewing or hiring him, despite the possibility of front office upheaval in New York this winter
should we really be surprised?

I read this. The best part of this is the one comment on it. Read that and you’ll chuckle.

Sadly your point about Jerry Manuel being a decent human being but not good at his job can be extended to many people in the Mets organization both on-field and off.
A pundit that Mr. NJ covets thinks so too:

In my world, Omar won’t have a chance to sign Jerry to an extension b/c Omar will no longer be the GM….

I am with MF that Omar really needs to be reassigned (and marginalized) in the Met FO. But, I don’t really think it makes 1 iota of difference as to the manager, since that decision I bet is coming straight from Wilpon.
and even if they do want that guy from Philly, of course they can’t say so now. He is under contract, so I assume it would be tampering. And I believe little of what the “unnmaed sources” say.

also, re: Jerry, he is not technically a FA after this season.
His contract has a team option year for 2011 (I believe for 1.5mill). So, if the mets want him back on a 1 year deal, it is up to them.
That scares me more that they decide to give 1 more, 1 more chance to the Jidiot. Just to prove that the 3 bad years in a row (full of poor decisions, and poor play) really are related to him being lousy at his job!

Man I don’t pay attention for one day and there’s talk somewhere of Jerry extensions. Rumor’s of interest in a guy from Philly as the next Manager. Once again the reason to come here for Met’s news and rumblings distilled down to the essentials. I have some catching up to do.
Anyway, one thing I found interesting that I did hear yesterday was Eddie C’s comment on the Met’s season on FAN. He spoke of how he likes to break the season into thirds and after one third they were 27-27 after 54, 54-54 after 108 and why should we expect them to be nothing more than around 81-81 and .500. Basically, that there an inconsistent .500 team which is what many here have said all along. Interesting the numbers broke so cleanly though. He also eluded to what a drudgery it’s been to cover this team on the recent road trips and each series is just more of the same. I was surprised he was so open but he’s been around long enough that he should be entitled to his honest opinion.
Anyway, a good day to all. I must go catch up now.

the philly guy was a director of scouting of some sort. I am assuming they were considering him for a FO position, not manager.
But with the Mets, who knows!

what worries me is the possibility of the Mets rationale that since Jerry has never had all his players healthy at one time, they will give him 2011.
