Link: Mets’ Draft Class of ’08 Shows Startling Promise

Nice article by Davis Waldstein of the New York Times on the Mets 2008 draft.

Here is something that stood out for me.

Since 2006, the Mets rank 29th out of 30 teams in bonus money paid to draftees, with $20.6 million (the average for that period was $29.3 million). But in 2008, they spent slightly more lavishly, $6.46 million, which placed them 14th that year.

Nice article and I also saw where over the last 3 years the Mets have been around league average on spending on the draft. What was more interesting is that besides the Nats they have outspent every team in the NL East.

i think they spent the least, or very close to it, of any team last year.

in any event, the mets are not in the league average income category.

Point was that they are doing better over the course of those 3 years and are out spending the rest of the NL East. No they are not spending enough… just making a point that they seem to be getting better.

I am not well versed in mlb draft signings and bonuses or the whole over slot concept so I leave this conversation for more well versed people in this area.

What I took from the above quote from the article was that maybe the Mets draft success was the ability to sign said players because they spent more money than usual.

If this is true or not I can’t say. I mean if the Mets spent closer to the bottom of the pack as they had done in previous years according to the article would they still have signed the same players?

That is something maybe Metro could tackle. Hopefully using some source to explain his reasoning one way or another.

Over the last 3 years the Mets are 9/16 in signing bonuses in the NL. My point though still was that they are 2nd in the NL East which I found surprising.

It be nice maybe if you could show where you are pulling these numbers from. Since it seems you are saying they contradict what baseball america is saying.

        2. TRS86

No they are not in contradiction. 2006 is not in the last 3 years, neither is 2007.

          Link.

However, it does show I can’t read. It is sorted by 2010.

          2. TRS86

Yet My 2nd statement, the one that I was more surprised with, still holds true. They have outspent the Phillies, Marlins and Braves.

          3. TRS86

So to expand on that, there are only 4 teams that have spent less than the Mets over the last 3 years and 3 of the are in the NL East.

          4. stickguy

it also makes sense that teams that win a lot spend less (since they don’t get a high pick), and you spend less when you forfeit 1st and 2nd round picks for signing FAs.

          5. TRS86

That does not really apply for the Marlins and Braves though. For the Phillies what it shows is that thoughts of now or never again. They have traded top prospects, signed big FA and spent little on the draft.

Ok so basically Basbeall America says that over the last 3 years the Mets $14,315,500 ranks 26th out of 30 teams on draft bonuses.

Only the following teams spent less
            $14,315,500 Mets
            $13,900,300 Marlins
            $13,897,900 Phillies
            $13,417,100 braves
            $12,772,300 White Sox

So over the last 3 years they rank 26th out of 30 which I guess it is an improvement from 29th out of 30 if you include 2006 and 2007.

            Again am I missing something?

          7. TRS86

I said I misread the chart. However, I am still surprised that 3 of the 4 teams below them are the in the NL East.

Yes it is an improvement that 2/3 years they were average in the NL.

          8. Mr North Jersey

Yea by the team you realized your mistake I was already researching if what you said was accurate and writing my reply.

Only after I refreshed the page when I commented did I realize you was aware of your mistake.

            Sorry

          9. TRS86

No biggie. Again, do you find it surprising that 3/4 teams below the Mets were in the NL East?

I wonder what the connection there is?

          10. Mr North Jersey

No not really just a coincidence I suppose.

          11. TRS86

Perhaps but that seems to be too convenient to be a coincidence.

I hope the Mets stop the PR campaign on Kirk and Ratliff before the expectations they encourage force them into poor development decisions.

Right now both of those guys are whiff machines who shouldn’t be considered near ready prospects.

    1. stickguy

ready at this point really does depend on how soon they get a handle on plate discipline.

Not that uncommon for Ks to go up when the power develops, but the guys that never add the OBP and cut down the Ks don’t usually go anywhere.

  3. stickguy

    2008 looks good.

too bad 2007 and 2009 were terrible.

  4. stickguy

here is the numbers. as Real said, over 2008-2010, the mets spent more than the phils, braves or marlins. Obviously the Nats spent more (being the worst team in the league does get expensive).

    1. TRS86

Well I had it partly correct. That is strange though that it seems to be an NL East issue.

Can someone shut up Tony Dungy?
