Manny Claimed By a Mystery Team…

Manny Ramirez Claimed On Waivers

Boy wouldn’t that be a turn of events.  However so unlikely we can debate what would happen if the Mets were that mysterious team.  Yeah it would serve really no purpose but hey what else do we have to talk about?  Ollie again?

UPDATE:  If you did not get a chance to play it’s too late.  The White Sox won the Manny sweepstakes.  Darn.

It’s not the Mets. (not an actual report, just that I know it won’t be)

From what I understand he was claimed by multiple teams. Given that I think it’s quite reasonable to believe that if the Mets were one of those teams they would win the claim because I just can’t imagine an NL team with a worse record than the Mets making a claim.

But I also just can’t imagine the Mets making a claim it’s too far fetched for me to believe.

      Crazy far fetched.

It goes against the youth movement, against keeping salary down, against trading away the farm, etc.

      1. Prismo

He was probably claimed by another team in the NL West to make sure the Dodgers hold onto him! Waiver claim stories…eh.

        1. njstuckintx

Similar to the Yanks with Chris Carter when the Mets were right in the thick of it all… err, nevermind…

      2. TRS86

Would not have anything to do with trading the farm. They don’t have to trade anything.

If Dodgers don’t let him go for free then so be it.

maybe the giants? Seems like they are trying to accumlate every old, decrepit and/or just plain bad OF that still has any kind of bat.

But, Manny holds all the cards, thanks to the NTC. They should ban those in baseball. sucks all the fun out of pie in the sky trade scenerios.

Heyman, Stark and others reporting that it’s the White Sox which is what I think has been the majority speculation for days now.

    1. Mr North Jersey

thats what i been hearing also

  5. aaguero9

Stark says Manny was claimed by White Sox. I hope they get him, since Ozzie and him will be a better circus than Ringling Bros. Also, I have tix for Red Sox-White Sox, so I’ll be pumped!

    1. Mr North Jersey

Hi don’t recall seeing you before so let me say welcome.

  6. TRS86

Here’s the question. Who claimed him that had a better record than the White Sox?

    1. GravediggerHebner

Heyman said Texas. They were the only other team anyone noted whose tweets I follow.

      1. TRS86

Hmmm, so Texas is one of the 3 teams. Who else?

        1. TRS86

          Twins?

          1. GravediggerHebner

I haven’t been paying close attention to all the information coming out about this but of those writers whose comments I have noticed none have referred to a specific third team and frankly I’m not really curious enough to pursue it further.

I saw that the Dodgers placed Lilly on waivers. Do you think it would be wise for a team like the Mets to at least place a claim on him? I know the Dodgers would want something in return but what does the claim hurt? The claiming team I think can offer arbitration and either get him for a decent 1 year contract or get 2 picks.

    1. Mr North Jersey

Wouldn’t the idea behind putting Lilly on waivers by the Dodgers be to get something better than the 2 draft picks they will get if they simply hold on to him and he goes to free agency?

If that is the case then wouldn’t the Mets have to offer the Dodgers something better than the 2 draft picks the Dodgers expect to get so the Dodgers do not pull him back?

      1. TRS86

What does it hurt if they pull him back? That’s what I am saying. It’s really a no lose situation for the Mets for claiming him right?

If they pull him back you lose nothing.
If they say we will let him go for 2 really good PTBNL, then you say no thanks…
If they let him go for free then that’s really good.
If they say we will take a scrub that’s good too.

        1. Mr North Jersey

I agree with you that the Mets lose nothing in trying and seeing if they can pull one over on the Dodgers.

I guess trying for the sake of trying in hopes the Dodgers drop the ball is fine but at the same time I won’t hold my breath waiting for the Dodgers to drop the ball on that one.

          1. TRS86

Oh I don’t either and I guess it would be kind of a dick thing to do as well. Might hurt future negotiations so perhaps it would hurt them.

          2. stickguy

also possible the dodgers don’t want to offer him arbitration this year. Just like last year with Wolf.

    2. GravediggerHebner

Considering NJ’s good point I’d say no it would not be wise of the Mets to do it because in that context it doesn’t seem worth it.

I had not thought of it that way however and prior to reading NJ’s comment my thought was while it might be wise for the Mets to do something along these lines sadly I don’t give them credit for being wise along these lines.

      1. Dirtysanchez

        so in short…..your saying nj is…dare i say it…right?! ;p

        1. TRS86

          Kinda.
My point is that even though the chances are they would pull him back, what does it hurt to claim him? It does not require us to trade anything. If they pull him back what do we lose?

          1. GravediggerHebner

I suppose. The whole idea of “gee I hope the Dodgers are stupid” as a motivation for making the claim just doesn’t appeal to me but maybe in the cold world of sports business decisions that’s precisely what should be done.

I would like to think that the Mets (or any team) should only make an August waiver claim if they are willing to pay “perceived fair market value” in trade for the player. Otherwise it reeks of shenanigans to me.

          2. Mr North Jersey

            Well said.

        2. Mr North Jersey

lol oye Porta te Bien. :-P

        3. GravediggerHebner

          Never!

          1. Mr North Jersey

I couldn’t help as I read that Never! comment to hear it in Daniel Stern’s voice the way he said it in Home Alone.

  8. Gonzo Will

I hate the whole mystery bit.
