Mejia To Make Triple AAA Debut On Monday

Official Press Release from The Bisons.com

The New York Mets today announced that RHP JENRRY MEJIA will be promoted on Monday to the Buffalo Bisons from Double-A Binghamton to start for the Herd against the Syracuse Chiefs.

Buffalo hosts the Chiefs at Coca-Cola Field on Monday, August 30 (7:05 p.m.) to start the team’s final homestand of the 2010 season.

Mejia, 20, is 2-0 with a 1.32ERA in six starts for the Binghamton Mets (27.1IP, 19H, 14BB, 26K). In each of his last two outings, the righty has thrown seven shutout innings. Overall, Double-A hitters are averaging just .200 off him.

Before the season, Mejia was named the Mets #1 prospect, according to Baseball America. Mejia made the Mets’ Opening Day roster out of spring training and pitched in 30 games out of the bullpen for New York. The 20-year old was 0-2 with a 3.25ERA in 27.2 innings of work (29H, 15BB, 17K). It was his first time being used exclusively as a reliever.

I’m going to assume that once Buffalo’s season is over he will be called up by the Mets and finish out the Major League season in the rotation. Unless that goes horribly I suppose then he will go to 2011 spring training with a fairly legit shot at winning a spot in the MLB rotation although that whole Verducci Effect thing would get quite a test at that point.

I can live either way with having him up for a couple of starts this year.

but, I 100% think the mets need to go after a solid, proven SP to round out the rotation going into ST. don’t even leave a possible spot for him.

Let him go to AA or AAA, and prove that he deserves to be in the majors. At some point, there will be an opening/need for him, or he will force his way in somehow.

I don’t have a problem with Mejia making a couple of starts in Sep either.
Agree though on the need for another SP for next season. We have very little depth for the ML level, even if we’re going to count Mejia.
