“I thought we created a lot to build on in ’06, but it seems like we have taken some steps back, off of that year.” – David Wright
If that isn’t the most obvious statement then I don’t know what is. The sad part is that the Mets may have a few more steps back to take before they take another step forward.
Their already is a Mets Tragic # watch that stands at 25 but soon the time will come for the Wilpons to address just what if anything at all they intend to do to right this ship. A difficult task indeed for whomever is charged with that responsibility.
Who stays? Who goes? Who makes that call? Get one of these wrong and the franchise can be set back for another 5 years. The magic/tragic # for the Mets may be 25 but the only number that I am concerned with is 35 the number of days remaining in the season.

The only number I’m concerned with is…
…that of my local pizza shop.
…Sophia Vergara’s bust size.
…the one on my ticket matching the lotto winner.
…the combination to my bike lock.
…the one in the amount box on my paycheck.
…the one that cute girl at the bar wrote on the napkin that I can’t find.

I’m glad Wright is saying this because it’s true, and because it might put some necessary pressure on the organization to make some meaningful (or otherwise) change.
The part of that article that resonated the most with me was this:
“The Mets’ history is this: They chase their own tails. They usually look at their previous season, decide where they were deficient, try to fix that area and hope they receive the exact same production from their strong areas. It usually doesn’t work out well — and they go tail-chasing in another area the next offseason.”

I have been griping for years that they need to look, and plan, ahead better. even simple things like looking at the market, and working with what is available, instead of getting tunnel vision or trying to jam a square peg in a round hole.

Excuse me if I’m being dense and somehow missing the obvious but…
Grave reference’s an article here. Whose article is that? Where can I read the whole post?
I looked around some but I’m not finding one that revolves around this DWright quote.
I more and more am getting the impression that DWright thinks the reason they’ve been chasing their tails is in large part b/c of the poor construction of the team surrounding the core every year…whether it was a non effective BP, poor SP, not enough depth, etc. etc.

Thanks.
And this is very strange…I’m not seeing that link in the post above. I opened it in both I.E. and Firefox but still not seeing it.
This is the entire post I’m seeing:

Oops….never mind. I see now the link is there, embedded in the name David Wright.
For whatever reason, the first several times I clicked it last night and this morning, nothing happened. Right clicking it and ‘copy link location’, just lead me back to this home page.
I’m sure this is something with my browsers here on this PC. I’ll have to try it on my laptop later when I boot that up…..

This brings up an interesting item for consideration. At the previous site all the hyperlinks were a different color and thus easy to identify. Here they are underlined which in theory should make them identifiable but in this case it didn’t work.
Is it possible for the hyperlinks to be a different color and if so has this been considered?
Honestly I prefer them the way they are currently I feel they blend in better to make reading easier but that could be at the expense of people actually finding and using them.

I agree with you Grave. I read enough across several blogs to know that it’s usually done that way…it’s just underlined and you click that to take you to whatever original story the poster is referencing. I’m fine with that.
As I a said below, I did click DWright’s name but kept linking back to this post by you. After clearing out cache, cookies, etc….and opening a fresh browser the link did work for me.

well, for sure the statement is obvious on the surface. But, I assume he is looking at the bigger picture (not just record, but the overall organization).
But NJ, I do not think they need to take any steps farther back before they can move forward. Yes, they need some serious, fundamental changes this off season (FO, coaching staff and manager). And some players (but, you have that every year).
But even with all that, they can, and should be better (and win more) next year. Hell, I still think the team is underachieving and should have more wins this year (absolutely if you factor in injuries, but even without that).
This is still probably going to be a .500 season (+/- a couple). say 80-84 wins. just not a huge leap to 88-90 and the playoffs.

I agree with you in respect to the team not taking a further step back. Maybe it’s semantics but it’s easy for me to envision next year’s team being very similar to this one so there won’t be a step back but I don’t see a step forward either – I see 2011 being more lateral while waiting for key expensive contracts to expire and the team being in a holding pattern until that happens.
So in that context maybe the step back Mr. NJ considers is one in which the players with these big contracts are jettisoned before the contracts expire but the replacement players are actually worse (in the short term – 2011) than the current players. Just a guess on my part.
Hypothetically for example the team parts with Castillo/Perez/Beltran. Now a tree stump would be an improvement over Perez but I can easily see economic factors contributing to the people replacing Castillo & Beltran being less productive (combined) than those 2 and thus the team being worse.
Please understand I’m not saying I think that’s likely, just one of many possibilities. It’s too early for me to have an opinion on what I think is likely to unfold in 2011 yet.

I think what stick is saying however is that we are not that far removed from a playoff spot. There is a fine line between a .500 team and a 90 win team. It’s hard not to think that with a better manager, 2B, SP, RP and Beltran all year (as much as I want him traded) that we could not be 9-10 wins better.

Understood. As simple as many of us have portrayed this roadmap from .500 to playoffs, I have my doubts that A). it is that simple; and/or B). that the current Mets organization could successfully pull it off.
