The Sunday Question

Everyone is quick to say that Jerry Manuel and Howard Johnson will be gone after this season.  This weeks question regards the Pitching Coach Dan Werthan.

Should the Mets retain Dan Werthan as their Pitching Coach for the 2011 Season?  Why or why not?

Does he deserve to be fired? No. He has done a nice job especially with Niese and Pelf. Will he go? He should. When you clean house and get a new manager generally they want their boys around them.

EVERYTHING MUST GO!!! 99% off Ollie and Castillo, all deals final.

    No, Warthen goes too.

performance wise, you could make a case for (or against him). But if the rest of the staff was staying, he could too. Pelf has been good and bad, and they all seem to have trouble in the 1st inning (well, johan and pelf do). but overall, the pitching has been pretty good.

But, he has to go because we are at the point were the manager is out the door (has to be), along with the HC. And really, the FO needs a gut and remodel too (bye, omar).

So, fresh persepctives all around . and new manager should not have any hold over coaches. So it may make him collateral damage, but Warthen will be gone too.

Not really a great loss. I don’t see him getting that much credit, and some problems seem to take forever to correct (after the booth points them out!).

      I agree with all this.

Since I believe Jerry will be replaced, the new manager should get to pick his own staff (within reason, of course). I don’t want to be reading 2 or 3 months into next year, if they’re struggling, that it’s the fault of retaining X, Y or Z and it’s the FO fault for not seeing the forest through the trees.

Then again, I believe the FO should consist of a new GM as well….

I believe there is enough discontent in the organization with Omar (the chosen one) that he will be re-assigned after the season meaning a new GM will be in place.

Whether that is a “real” GM or a “puppet” GM is largely irrelevant. Either way I think that GM will be allowed to hire a new manager and I believe that manager, in concert with the GM and ownership, will be allowed to install a new coaching staff.

I expect a clean sweep. Whether they all deserve it or not I feel it’s more important for the new regime to install their people and I desperately hope the owners feel similarly. The only coach I would welcome back would be Chip Hale. Who knows, maybe he’ll become manager?

I guess it depends on if Chip was a Jerry or Omar guy. If so they all have to go.
