With the New York Mets 2010 season unofficially done (go ahead Mets sweep the Braves and make me eat this) I’m interested to look ahead at some potential changes from within to the team’s 40-man roster. Given the framework for the December Rule 5 draft (players drafted out of HS in 2006 or out of college in 2007 must be protected) here’s a quick list of some players in the Mets minor leagues that may be added to the 40-man roster over the coming months.
Josh Stinson – ’06 HS
Brant Rustich – ’07 College
Zach Lutz – ’07 College
Lucas Duda – ’07 College
Michael Antonini – ’07 College
Dillon Gee – ’07 College
Roy Merritt – ’07 College
Rylan Sandoval* – ’07 College
*Sandoval was drafted in 2007 but only began playing in the Mets system in 2010, it is unclear whether he is subject to rule 5 protection at this stage. This is not the complete, official list of players that must be protected. It does not take into account any international signings. It is just a subjective list of some drafted players that might be. This link will allow you to search for other drafted eligible players.

Im no wiz at this sort of thing but if they are not protected, some other club can snatch one of them up but they would have to remain on that clubs 25 man roster…is that right?

yes. they have to pay the mets $50K (insert madoff joke here). Then they have to stay on the 25 man roster all season. If the claiming team wants to send them to the minors, the player has to first be offered back to the Mets for $25K (just use the same madoff joke here). If the Mets buy him back, they can send him down.
This is how the Mets botched up with O’day (last year?).
Also why they lost Flores a few years back. They took a risk that no team would draft an A ball catcher and keep him on the roster the entire year, not figuring that the Nats were so bad, that they would!
so unless you really don’t care about a guy getting claimed, you really need to get them on the 40 man roster.

Yes. My basic understanding is that there is the Major League phase in which anyone drafted must stay on the 25 man roster (or disabled list) of the team that selects them for the full season.
Then there is a minor league phase but I am not clear on what the stipulations are, if any, for keeping those players and a very quick google search didn’t turn them up.

I believe those are the 6 year MiL FAs, but I also don’t know the specifics. But those guys can stay in the minors.

Good point on 6 year FA. I think you’ve got it.
All I remember about last year’s rule 5 draft is the Mets picking Carlos Monasterios and then before I could even look him up to find out anything about him he had been traded to the Dodgers for whom he’s doing fairly well.

not traded. sold. The Mets did not seem to want anyone for themselves (think they might have learned something last year with O’day), but spent the time earning relative couch cushion change taking a guy for the Dodges, just they could make a few quick bucks.
Logically, the only reason the dodgers would do this is if other teams thought he was talented enough to take. And if this is the case, why didn’t the mets?
