Agreed. Turner should be up. When is their season over? Today, or next week some time?

  2. Dirtysanchez

    I thought turner was injured?

  3. stickguy

Buffalo season ends either this sunday or monday. And Evans and Turner better be up the day after. They have already been eliminated from the playoffs, and today is their last home game, so could call them up tomorrow without depriving the Buffalo faithful!

Turner missed 9 games, but cam back Tuesday, and has crushed the ball since then. Originally it was reported that he had a serious injury and could be out for the year, but it seems he heals a lot quicker than other Mets with knee issues.

He should have been called up instead of Tejada a month ago. That move was a head scratcher.

If turner can show solid D and any kind of hitting over the next 3 weeks, he has to be in the mix for at minimum the BU MI job next year (he can play SS too), if not the starting gig at 2B

    1. Dirtysanchez

oh ok…then thats where I heard he was gone for the season. There is NO reason what so ever to not have this guy up in september…none.

      1. stickguy

can you ever be that definitive when the team is run by the Mets FO?

        1. Dirtysanchez

lol…never…but would love to see the squirming to justify NOT bringing him up

Gotta love Jerry… before yesterdays game

“My understanding is he can play everywhere,” Manuel said. “My understanding is he has played some games at first base this year. My understanding is that he has played second base. My understanding also is that he’s played center field. If he had been playing let’s say two or three days ago, he might have been a guy I put in the outfield just because he’s athletic. … It would be tough for him to be available today because he has not played in two or three weeks. We’re just trying to get him acclimated to just being back in a uniform. It would have to be an emergency for me to put him out there today.”

0 career games in the OF at any level AND Jamey Newberg aka the “Rangers expert” said this to me

@WexlerRules No chance. Rangers tried CF in Mar 07, but he hurt his shoulder, which never fully came back. Can’t really play SS now either. about 1 hour ago via Power Twitter in reply to WexlerRules

wil there be anyone sad to see the Jerry era end at the end of the month?

maybe some of the writers that like his rambling quotes, but that is about it.

    2. wannybackstra

I thought I heard John Ricco say that he had played some OF in the Dominicna League for Ken Oberkfell?

      1. GravediggerHebner

I recall seeing that somewhere last night but I can’t remember where/who said it.

going off on a tangent, triggered by a post on Toby’s minors blog, but is ita guarantee that Ike is the opening day 1B next year?

Putting aside the D (which might be enough to keep him in th eline up), but what if Duda shows that his year in the minors was not a fluke, and he hits with authority in september, making the next adam dunn comparisons look less far fetched. And at the same time, Davis continues to be a K machine (although he has gotten on base a little better lately).

If they both go to ST and show similar traits, is it completely off the table that Davis could start the season in AAa to try and tighten/shorten his swing, and cut down on the Ks?

Not saying it wil happen, but why is Ike seemingly locked into his spot like Wright?

Now, ideally, Ike makes some adjustemnts in the off season and has a better year, but then DUda is out in the cold. Unless he gets traded (and it is hard to trade the only real “thumper” in the system at this point), you have to play either him or Bay in RF to get them both in.

Of course, they could trade bay…. Sorry, slipped into fantasy land there for a minute.

    1. Dirtysanchez

I thought duda was an OF?

      1. stickguy

he was primarily a 1B initially in the minors, but in the last couple of years shifted over to play more OF (he has also spent time in RF). I believe he spent more time in the OF because of Ike.

    2. Mr North Jersey

Whatever Duda does the sampling will be too small.

    3. GravediggerHebner

I am going now to read Toby’s piece but before I do my initial thought is that the Mets have more invested in Ike Davis (1st rounder, 23yo) being “their future” than they do Lucas Duda (7th rounder, 24yo) and thus perhaps this assumption.

      1. stickguy

well, that is part of my question. Should it matter? what is the mets goal for 2011: win/playoffs, or shoot for .500 will rebuilding/developing?

If a former 1st round pick is being outperfromed by a 7th round pick, does the higher guy still get to play just because of that, even if it seems to give the team a better shot at winning to do it the other way?

and that was ot specifically a question about ike/duda, just a philosophical one.

        1. GravediggerHebner

In my opinion while it shouldn’t be a key, deciding factor, I can’t see a situation in which the organization’s investment in the player from the moment they were chosen in the draft not being some factor.

And given that these are the dysfunctional Mets we’re talking about it’s reasonable to think IMO that it will be more of a factor than it should.

Part, just part, of what makes someone a 1st round pick versus a 7th round pick is future projection. So on some level the future, at least at the respective time they were picked, was deemed more bright for Davis than Duda. Since then have we gone far enough into that future to now determine otherwise?

Clearly at some point the cord must be cut. But I hesitate to think we’re at that point yet with Ike.

    4. oleosmirf

Ike is our 1B however lets say Duda has a very good Sept, i think that pushes Beltran closer to the door.

Catcher, Turner, Murphy, Duda, RH bat, is a pretty solid bench though

      1. stickguy

I suppose he could go to the bench. but I don’t see them wanting to do that if he looks like the real deal.

and if you think it means beltran is expendable, does that mean you want to see duda and bay as the regular corner OFs?

Now, a platoon with the $66million man could be interesting!

        1. TRS86

I would have no problem giving Duda a try in RF if he shows he can hold his own and we can get Beltran traded.

          1. Prismo

            What about FMart!?

          2. oleosmirf

he needs to go back to St Lucie and start from scratch. play like 6 weeks in A+, 2 months in AA, 1 month in AAA and see where he is at in Sept.

          3. TRS86

I see no reason to start him from scratch. When healthy he has shown some potential in AAA. He just needs to stay healthy and not be messed with the very second he gets going.

          4. stickguy

not sure what his injury recovery time is (for this injury), but hopefully he is fully recovered (at least for him) in time for the dominican winter season, and he manages to have a good campaign and stay healthy.

making it through ST, and starting strong in AAA would go a long way to rebuilding his prospect reputation.

  6. metro

Mike Nickeas promoted to the big club. Acquired for Victor Diaz. Not much of a hitter (solid year this year) 6 year FA after the year. With Thole the likely starter next year Nickeas doesnt have much of a future here but he has defensive skills.

    1. TRS86

So no shot he could be the backup next year?

      1. metro

Very unlikely. First of Thole as the starter almost 100% means they will go with a veteran backup. Blanco likely returns and if not somebody more “proven”. Second he needs to be on the 40 man all winter to prevent him from being free to sign somewhere else. Adding him to the 40 man doesn’t make sense when guys like Niesen, Armando Rodriguez etc need to be protected.
