We all know that the end is near and since our chances are slim to none that the Mets are playing in October our question surrounds our stud starter and shortstop who have both suffered an injuries.
Since Johan Santana has injured an pectoral muscle and Jose Reyes reinjured his already injured oblique, should either one be shut down for the remaining season? Why or why not?

Well that’s not a easy question to answer – we ar talking about the mets medical staff here and the front offices desire to fill seats – I say Jose should definitely be shut down – obliques need time to heal Johan and his pectorial muscle – who knows ? If it’s just a mild strain then see if he is okay after a bullpen session – if not then keep him day to day – who knows I’m not a doctor

I am more likely to say shut down reyes. Unless he has had enough rest to feel no pain, and is not restricted at all. I can see that he would want to finish the seaosn healthy and playing, even if just for his own mental sake.
Johan has pitched 199 innings. But, if it really was as minor as he seemed to feel it was (a cramp? just a tweak? ANd it has felt 100% since then, and he got through a BP session fine, then what the hell, let him pitch. maybe skip 1 start?
not that it would probably hurt though giving him an early end to the year again to save some miles on that arm.
but, like Rusty said, this is the mets, and it is hard to blame them for wanting to have their stars on the field (or make money).
besides, you already have enough people complaining about the AAA team on the field. Isn’t the top talent what everyone wants to see on the field, earning their money? Oh, that and more wins.

It is a difficult question to answer.
All depends on how each player feels and the extend of that injury.
Given the fact that Johan wasn’t even planning on coming out of the game that day, I’m not sure that injury is really even an injury. If he’s still feeling it during his BP sessions going forward, just skip the next start. If it’s still bothering him, then yeah…maybe just shutting him down would be for the best.
Reyes’ injury appears to be more severe – one he’s had for a while and never healed. To me, there is no reason at this point to play him while injured.
