    Quit possibly the best post I’ve seen around the Met blog sphere this week. Thanks for sharing.

    I’ve always wished that I lived closer to one of the Mets minor league affiliates. I know I’d be going to lots of games – due to ease of getting there, low ticket prices and I just would really enjoy it.

    But no….I’ve got some crappy Philly minor league team down in Lakewood – the ‘BlueClaws’.

    sigh….

      minor league games are a lot of fun. I have been to see the mets AAA (Norfolk, actually when it was still Tidewater) and when they had a team in Little Falls, NY (A ball I believe).

      Little falls was fun. During (or maybe just before) they had a cow milking contest. Local milk maid (yes, this is out in farm country) vs. a player.

      That is something you will never see at CItifield!

      I meant to get up to Buffalo, or Binghamton. or Trenton when the Binghamton club was there. or Brooklyn. Or Bridgeport Bluefins..fail, all around.

        I drive through bingo a lot now. need to stop some time when the team is playing.

        Ceets, did you go to cornell, or just your fiancee? I was just there a few weeks ago, taking my son back. Nice place.

    I don’t pretend to know how they calculate it but MLBTR’s latest “Elias Rankings Update” suggests some interesting things.

    Apparently for the system to work everyone has to be ranked whether they are actually free agents of not.

    Jason Bay is Type A, the 6th highest ranked OF in the NL;
    Angel Pagan is Type A, 13th;
    Carlos Beltran is Type B, 21st;

    David Wright is Type A, 2nd ranked 3B;

    Luis Castillo is Type B, 9th ranked 2B;

    Ike Davis, Jose Reyes, Josh Thole & Henry Blanco are ranked below Type B at their positions;

    Johan Santana is Type A, 7th ranked SP;
    Mike Pelfrey is Type B, 37th;

    all other Mets starters (except Dickey, see relievers) are ranked below Type B;

    Francisco Rodriguez is Type A, 9th ranked RP;
    Pedro Feliciano is Type B, 34th;
    R.A. Dickey is Type B, 54th (grouped with relievers)
    all other Mets relievers are ranked below Type B.

      the rankings are a giant black box formula (very secret stuff!) But I am pretty sure that it is based on a combined 2 years stats. So Bay is living off of last year, but obviously not accruing any more time for this year.

      Interesting….

      Is this ranking on overall career numbers – or just 2010?

      Dickey is grouped with relievers? And is 54th? That can’t be right. That would tell me then it’s based on overall major league numbers and not just this season.

      Wright is Type A, 2nd ranked 3rd base.
      Take that Francesa! He’s stated Wright is overrated and Polanco is a much better 3rd baseman.

      My afternoons are so much better since I decided to tune out MF, his rants and his poor manners this summer…..

      1. stickguy

        based on the current and previous year. I am pretty sure of that part.

    Something for MF. Doesn’t belong here, and will likely get lost (might actually make a good post, with some commentary looking back on it).

    If nothing else, it can help explain some of the decisions, and the Wilpons attachment to Omar. It is more than just a “we like this guy”.

    Not sure how much the team is still trying to follow this, but it actually makes sense to reassign Omar to oversee other aspects of the organization if they want to be truly successful, even with a strange vision!

      This article was great, stick. A long read, but really interesting.

      I’m one Met fan that never had any problem with Omar and the Mets concentrating on Latino talent. Talent is talent, I don’t care what the player’s last name sounds like.

      For those who think the Mets were ‘cheaping out’ somehow concentrating on Latino talent, they should read this article. Goes well beyond signing kids for peanuts. They’re not only teaching them baseball, they’re teaching them and providing for, some of the things we here in America take for granted like 3 squares a day and how to write a check.

      Now…where this vision and reality broke down is a whole different story. I don’t care that Omar doesn’t have a college degree but his tendency (or maybe past tendency?) to ignore new type of stats might have contributed to our ‘near’ misses ’06-’08.

      I don’t hate on Omar as some Met fans do. If they reassign him, put his strengths to better use, I have no problem with that. I just think it’s time for a new perception, a new direction. Since we’re stuck with the Wilpons and I believe Omar had his shot, the single best move they can make is a new GM.

    FYI for anyone interested in knowing what is this song’s name? It’s called “Dynamite” sung by Taio Cruz.
