Did you hear those chants Fred and Jeff?

Playing at Citi Field is like playing at home!

Well did you, did you hear it in the ninth inning?  I know the valiant Met fans at Citi Field tried their best to drown them out, hell I even heard the P.A. system try it’s best but there were just too many of them.

There were too many Phillie fans at Citi Field yesterday.  And I could bet there be more there today, chanting for their team and booing our players.  I’m quite sure Fred and Jeff heard them but maybe they’ll didn’t feel that bad, after all, I’m sure all those Philly fans had to eat and drink.

But is this what they really wanted?  Citi Field filled with Philly fans making up jokes about the Mets?  I doubt it but there isn’t much anybody can do about it.

I wonder how Fred and Jeff will feel after today’s game?  I know the Braves will be up soon but I doubt many fans will fill the seats because they can’t even fill their own ballpark.

Funny isn’t it?  Here are the Braves, who have been in first or at least within a game of the lead and they STILL don’t fill their stadium.   What’s up with that?

I wrote two days ago that I wanted a team in our division to clinch at Citi Field to illustrate to ownership what they need to do.  Now I hope they see who is in the stands.  I saw a lot of red when the camera’s panned the stands.

What a shame huh?

    and booing our player

You sure that wasn’t Mets fans?

I thought I saw someplace that they boo’d Bletran the other day when he hit the HR? Or was I having a nightmare?

In life, many people get what they hope for. ANd I think that goes for fans too. THey often get the team they boo at!

Most Mets fans were, as I was, watching football. They probably would have sold Citi out with Phillies fans if the Eagles didn’t have a 4pm game.

      1. gategem

I write this on Monday morning at 3:00 AM so I was referencing Sunday’s game which also had predominately Phillies fans in attendance. As for Saturday’s game most fans were probably taking part in one of the extraordinary entertainment attractions that New York has to offer. Phillies fans were probably preparing for the following day’s Eagles game.

I am afraid that, quite clearly, the sound of the cash register is all the Wilpons hear–if they even ever attend or watch games.

The way they have done literally zero as this train wreck has careened down the cliffside (other than act quickly when the KRod situation presented the chance to save money)largely confirms what all of the anti-Wilponites have said for years.

It is going to be a long winter for Met fans.

But the Dolphins’ game is on TV here at 1—YES!

  3. metsfan4decades

You’ve got that right, Gonzo. I was watching at home and even I heard the booing.

I said it on the last thread…..the FO has no one to blame but themselves for this fiasco. We’re stuck with the Wilpons but this is a prime example of why a new GM is needed. I’m not saying everything Omar has done in his 6 years or so is all bad. But…he’s had his shot and it wasn’t enough. Couple that with the way the past several years have gone down and Omar’s poor speaking skills and what we have here is a circus not a well run organization.

If we were a winning ball club, Omar’s poor speaking skills wouldn’t matter as much. But we’re not and it just adds to the perception of this team, this franchise, as a whole.

There have been a couple of players who might have been mal contents as well but for the most part, from what I see, to a man they want to win. And maybe it’s me but the impression I’m getting from a few of them now is they can only do so much with what they have to work with. Same with Jerry but by no means am I excusing him in some of this either.

Omar was the architect and it’s a very shaky building. Clean house, starting at the top.

    1. stickguy

so I am getting the impression that you don’t want Omar around anymore?

      1. metsfan4decades

LOL….nothing personal. I just believe his ‘vision’ has been too narrow minded and not flexible enough. I’ve seen nothing indicating he’s changed much so do we really want Omar at the helm here this off season making decisions concerning the direction this team should be going in?

        1. metsfan4decades

And for the record, I don’t care if they reassign him within the organization. I’m just looking for a better GM, one his believes some in those ‘new fangled’ stats, one who is proactive instead of reactive.

          1. Ceetar

Actually, Omar (really Jim Duquette/Phillips did but Omar kept him) employs a guy that’s a stathead and he “reportedly” is one of the guys that Omar confers with when he makes a decision.

          2. stickguy

well, you really have to know the players and the inner workings of the office to know for sure. But, not uncommon for the big boss to get lots of advice/opinions, and then do whatever the hell they felt like doing in the first place.

but I do agree that it is unlikely that Omar pays zippo attention to numbers and stats (even some of the new fangledy one) like some people seem to imply.

          3. Ceetar

That’s why I don’t feel comfortable screaming for Omar’s head. How do I know what was his decision, what he lobbied for and was shot down on, and what good advice he ignored?

I’ve actually got a “Keep Omar” post that MF4D will hate me for coming up tomorrow or Tuesday.

          4. metsfan4decades

            LOL…hate is just a strong word…

Hey, everyone is entitled to their opinion. If some see Omar’s position today differently than I do, it’s all good.

          5. stickguy

well, even if he is not actaully responsible for every move/non move, he still eneds to go. It is a results business, and when the results are bad, the figurehead guy goes. Omar and Jerry, that be you.

he must, however, have some decision making authority and power, and someone has to be handling organizatinal stuff beyond roster moves.

In any case, they really need to try a new voice, and hopefully some new ideas, even if still part of the committee (or whatever it is).

ALso, I think getting a new GM is a tacit admission that the old model is not working. Keeping him means that they think it is.

          6. metsfan4decades

He might now. But I read an article dating back to 2004 (I believe) where by Omar’s own admission he wasn’t a stat and numbers guy and preferred to make decisions not using ‘those’ as his bible.

I read the article a couple of years ago and it just stuck in my mind. I have to agree though that he cannot possibly be ignoring new information available in this day and age. If he is, he’s really going to be behind the curve.

          7. Ceetar

Well, I don’t know that he _should_ be using it as a bible. 2004 was a while ago, and I do recall him admitting that, but also that he has this guy (forget his name, could look it up..) to make those decisions for him and he trusts him on the stats and what they say.

Jason Bay could be an example of this. the reports were that the Mets had been analyzing him statistically, and felt he’d be a good fit for Citi Field.

That noise, my friends, is the sound of money.

But to be fair, I went to many met/philly games at the Vet where the Met fans and noise outnumbered and overwhelmed the pitiful Philly fan preseence (yes, they are tremendous front runners and new stadium event people. 2 bad years when the team ages in dog years before their eyes, and they will be booing and staying home. just like the old days. yet I digress.)

If the wilpons are even there of course. And if they are, they are probably in their sound proof luxury swuite, not paying attention.

at least the phils fans are generting revenue, in case the mets need any payroll money for next year!

Hey Stick….I give you a lot of credit for trying to be the voice of reason over at FWICG.com. From what I’m reading, even some of those posters are getting annoyed with the pot stirring the media is doing concerning all things Mets and the fact that MC keeps reporting it….

    1. stickguy

thank you. I always like to root for the underdog too.

I have noticed that MC seems to be going more and more toward the NY post model of saying something shocking, just to get attention (or hits). And I love how some of the posters keep getting on the hypocrisy of having a post saying it is wrong, then immediately doing it!

  6. stickguy

speaking of money (and I have a feeling we will be doing that a lot in the off season!), saw this today as I was wasting my time reading Lupica:

“But across the whole history of huge contracts in baseball, there has been no more consistent waste of big money than the big money spent on starting pitchers.”

of course, he was talking about Santana. But, he did call out Burnett and someone else too. And did reference how it was usually the back end that gets you. Stick with the “no FA pitcher contract longer than 3 years” rule and you are much safer.

the other waste? Huge money for a closer. For all the people worried that the means will disintegrate next eyar without F Rod (or another big $ stud closer), look at the twins. They lost the #1 or #2 closer in all of BB for the year, and did not miss a beat.

Hell, even the mets have made do with a patchwork. Taka? Doing just as good a job.

closers come out of nowhere every year. ANd of course, just as quickly fade away! That is why huge contracts for them make little sense.

    1. metsfan4decades

Regarding SPs, I agree. Problem has been for the past decade or so in order to land that premium SP, you had to out bid the other team in money and usually years. I think that might be coming to somewhat of an end though as GMs across MLB have to be looking at the result of that – re: Santana, Burnett, etc.

As far as closers…again, I think Omar getting KRod and giving that huge incentive on the back end, was a reactive type move given the fact that we very possibly lost a chance at post season when Wagner went down in Aug and the BP blew 30 saves that year.

Philly won the division last year, and very possibly might win this year, with no closer to speak of. I’ll go one step further and say a crap BP this year. What they do have though is premium SP that goes deep in games. Those SP didn’t come cheap, outside of Hamels who was homegrown and did get an extension after ’08.

    2. Ceetar

It’s never a direct relationship. It’s not like the Twins lost Nathan and immediately got better. They had to make some smart moves. (I don’t know them well enough to break it down.)

Money’s just one factor. I do agree they’re paying Frankie too much, but the bullpen _is_ worse without him. He’s still a top reliever. He’s still something that needs to be replaced. That’s a lot of money for 60IP, but if it doesn’t keep you from paying for what else you need to pay for, it’s not as much an issue.

More of an issue in my mind is the adherance to the save rule. I think more of the problem was with Manuel than a closer. Be willing to use your ‘best’ reliever on the road, in two innings, even in the 8th if need be. Don’t automatically bring him in in the 9th if it becomes a save situation. Never managed to a ‘rule’.
