Problem is how do you count on him not being there? You are not going to go out an get an ace. You can go out and get a mid-rotation guy but you need that with our without Johan. Only way I see you can do that is to get that reliable mid-rotation guy and then try and sign one of those high risk guys and hope it works out. Investing 20M in 2 sp is not going to happen nor really should it.
Here’s how you count on him not being there: you don’t go to your flagship radio station and talk about how you’re going to do whatever it takes to field a championship caliber team; and you don’t refer to your team as championship caliber at any time.
That way you’ve planned for his not being here by not artificially inflating expectations. Any start from him in 2011, even one, becomes a bonus. You skillfully avoid the “we’ll just tread water until player X comes back” talk that got you into so much trouble the last couple of seasons.

Hearing the talk of Santana’s shoulder I would hope the Mets plan for the worst and hope for the best.
In other words plan for 2010 as if Santana can’t be counted on and adjust accordingly.

In short, you don’t BS your fans.

So you prepare for him not being here by preparing the fans for him not being here?
Not sure I follow. Of course they are going to try and BS in the media. Does not bother me what they say, just what they do.
