The Sunday Question

Even Jerry Manuel knows he’s gone after this 2010 season so lets ask everyone what they think of Joe Torre.

You want Joe Torre managing the Mets next season? Why or why not?

Bonus question:  Will the Jets beat the Patriots and will the Giants beat the Colts?

Yes, for one or two years while he grooms Mazz to take over.

Let’s face it. The Mets brand isn’t as shiny as before. Having Torre at the helm would help with the media and take attention away from the players. We’d get a professional (unlike Jerry who is a gangsta).

Money won’t be an issue if Torre turns saves this sinking ship.

Wally is Wally and Bobby V will be coaching in Japan.

    G-Men = Yes
    J-E-T-S = 0-2

I have to say no – the man is 70 years old and I honestly think that it is going to take at least 3-4 years before this team is a contender again. I have all th respect in the world for Joe – but as I said yesterday I doubt he still has the hunger to win

Football 1st. Giants will hold it close, and have a chance to upset.

The Jets are going to get blown out by the patriots, and it will not be close.

Torre? Absolutely now way I wan him near the mets. Terrible idea, terrible fit. ANd unlikely the Mets open up the wallet that wide for a manager.

too old, and ST, among other things. I would rather get someone that is ready and willing to build a team and culture up, and drive the bus for years to come.

Torre screams of only wnating (and being able) to take over a turn key team that just needs a stabilizing influence. A quick shot at another ring (and another big payday) and gone in a year or 2.

If they are going famous, might as well get Bobby.

Besides, I have seen enough of odd moves and terrible BP management.

Unless they have a new GM in place, I can’t see the Mets getting Joe. Joe’s role would be what Case mentioned above. To take focus off the players & be the media guy, all the while grooming the next Mets Mattingly (Backman? Mazz? Timmy T?). With a new GM in place and the understanding that there is a 3-4 year plan, with said groomed manager in waiting to take over in year 3-ish, I can see it as plausible. With Omar still as GM, I can’t see any long term plans being enacted. He’ll be in “turn this thing around asap, let’s let the future worry about itself” mode.

Gints and Jets both lose. Sorry day in Mudville, for sure.

No thanks. Torre isn’t going to come cheap. I’d rather they spend the money on a GM.
Also don’t think Torre is the best fit for this team right now. I’m seeing a team of young veterans, young rookies with a few older vets mixed in. I want to see a manager that believes in these kids, not one who knows going in he’s short term. What motivation will there be in that scenario?

Just re-posting my comment from yesterday on Torre, and Giants 2-0, Jets 0-2, and MUCH more importantly, Dolphins 2-0 and TWO GAMES ahead of the Jets.

No chance, no way, no how; Rusty you are right on the money.

Torre is like Phil Jackson at this point, and IF he decides to manage again, it will be somewhere where he can be overpaid and inherit a team ready to win. That is most definitely not the Met situation, and all signs also point to the Wilpons most definitely not paying the huge managerial sum Torre will surely demand.

Torre did a good job with the Dodgers for sure, and was clearly better with the Cards–and MUCH better with the Braves–than given credit for, but his resume largely consists of guiding a franchise which had an incredible farm system in the mid-90s, the highest payroll and probably the highest percentage of drug cheats to 4 rings.

Nothing about Torre shows him to be a manager suited to maximize young/questionable talent and/or motivate underachievers. If he was hired in the spring of 2007, that might have made sense. For 2011 it makes zero sense.

Bobby V is clearly the man for the job, and if the Wilpons won’t pay him, taking a flier on Wally or Teufel or even Gary Carter would be the next best bet.

Torre speculation is ridiculous media drivel.

Just say no to Joe. Terrible fit if you ask me. I’m intrigued by Wally, also wouldn’t mind a return of Bobby V. I think Carter could be a heck of a manager if given the chance. Catchers usually make pretty good managers/coaches.
