This Day In Mets Infamy With Rusty : The ” All Hope Is Gone !” Edition 09-19-10

“We believe in eight inning games !”
“We believe in comebacks !”
“We believe in home-field advantage !”
“Prevention and Recovery”

These were some of the the brilliant slogans that the Mets advertising agency trotted out at the beginning of the season. They were mocked then and they are being scoffed at now ! Yes folks if you haven’t already heard ( or hiding under a rock for the past two months or so) The inevitable has happened. That’s right, with their loss yesterday to the Atlanta Braves, the Mets were officially eliminated from being crowned the National League East Division champions. And it is most likely that later on today they will be eliminated from the Wild Card race !
I guess when that happens Jerry Manuel will finally drop his Don Quixote like facade and face the facts that us Mets fans have known for a while now …. All hope is gone !
Oh hope how I have believed in you . You enticed me to think way back in May through the early part of July that this team was as good as it they looked. You made me believe that they had more than a ghost of a chance that they would be in the thick of the pennant race come September and that the post season was within their grasp.
But NOOOO ! Hope you as you have through out my 28 years of rooting for the Mets are the Lucy Van Pelt to my (and the Mets ) Charlie Brown ! You mock us mercilessly and like a attractive girl you tease us that we have a chance before your boyfriend – the Philadelphia Phillies depants us in front of the entire class !
So here we stand in the autumn of the 2010 Mets season. There is only thirteen games left until the string is played out and the only true attainable goal in our sites is to finish at .500 or above. It is not satisfying in the least – But hey it seems that major changes are on their way. But for now it’s time to revel in our misery while gulping our brew of choice wondering what if things were different.
What if they hype was real and all we really had to do was “ Believe “.

"More like YA GOTTA BEREAVE !!"

And with that said… HERE COMES THE INFAMY !!!!!

Today marks what would have been the best announcer the Mets ever had 86th birthday, Bob Murphy (1924) . Bob was the ” voice of god” for us Mets fans. He was always there -through both the good and the bad Mets seasons. It was a right of passage to hear his voice crackle whether he was on WWOR, WHN , and later on WFAN.

Original Boys Of Summer and Mets outfielder for the ’63 season, Duke Snider is 84 ( 1926).

One time heir apparent to Jesse Orosco who went on to have a dominant closers career elsewhere, Randy Myers, is 48 (1962). Myers was traded to the Reds for Brooklyn born closer ( and future captain) John Franco after Myers had a altercation with then Mets “golden boy” Greg Jefferies .

Mo Vaughn’s least favorite movie title – A Fridge To Far”

And remember there are only 13 games left before jerry Manuel is shown the door and becomes the ex-manager of the New York Mets !

I’ve watched just about every post game show and Jerry interviews all season. I don’t think Jerry was fooling himself on just what this teams chances were after that road trip coming out of the ASB. The fact that he didn’t come out and actually say ‘it’ over’ doesn’t bother me in the least. I didn’t need that announcement to know it was.

I also didn’t mind the hokey advertising at the beginning of the season. All of them were doable, had they actually managed to do just that. They didn’t and there’s more than one reason for that or enough blame to go around for this years failures.

It’s going forward now that I’m concerned about. End of the season, which looms in 13 games as Rusty points out, should show pretty quick just what direction the Wilpons are going in. I, for one, think what’s done immediately after the season will say more about this team and it’s chances next year then the Hot Stove immediately following. Get us a new GM to start with and take it from there.

LOVED Bob Murphy. Listened to him my entire life, and my Dad listened to him at Dartmouth in the late 50s when he did Red Sox games on the radio I believe, so he is in my family DNA. The Happy Recap is a saying I will never forget.

    A Fridge to Far–that’s good!
