A Quick Q&A with Bob Ojeda

During SNY’s 3rd inning Q&A this past Thursday as the Mets hosted the Pirates. This is the reply I got from Bob Ojeda to the following question.

[Comment From Mr_North_Jersey Mr_North_Jersey: ]
With reports of late of what may be a lot of movement this offseason around MLB at the GM & Management positions. Assuming the Mets decide a change is needed are their chances of landing the next GM/Mgr for 2011 worsened by waiting till the end of season to start interviewing replacements.

Bob Ojeda:
There is going to be a lot of movement, but I think it’s important that they let the season play out. There could be a lot of things already going on that we don’t hear about, as with any organization. The fact that we don’t hear about it doesn’t mean it’s not happening, just that they’re doing it in a professional way. And Omar Minaya has been conducting himself in a fine, upstanding manner while he’s questioned constantly about his job.

Earlier I posted a article (here) that suggests maybe Ojeda was on to something when he said “There could be a lot of things already going on“.  The question then becomes with reports that possible Mets candidate Kevin Towers having had a 2nd interview with the D-Backs are the Mets moving fast enough?

Great info MrNJ. How do we know that Jeff hasn’t been in phone contact with Towers for the past several weeks? If he’s going it correctly, we *wouldn’t* know.

True Prismo we really don’t know if they have talked to him (Towers) or not.

Or for that matter if they have not already decided on who it is and Towers is not it?

Or Ojeda could be saying “it’s me but I’m obligated by contract not to tell you until after the season.”

That’s just me joking but seriously I would hope that someone like Ojeda (and Darling and Hernandez) are at least asked for their opinions by ownership/management on these topics. Not that they would have anything close to final say but rather they would have some input into the discussion.

Those are brains that I would want picked.

does not seem like much movement will happen before seasons end, so really, what it the danger of waiting, when you certainly can be having all the discussion you want now?

Actually, you can’t. You can only talk to guys without jobs, or where the team has granted you permission (which becomes public), unless you go deep off the record.

ALso, you don’t know which options may become available once the season ends. Just say (pretend hard here) that AZ would be interested in Omar if he was available. Why whould they rush to hire someone else, until they knew?

so this goes for all the other acitve GMs and managers who may get cut loose in a few weeks.

I certainly hope they’re not waiting until season’s end to be discussing this.
The fact that we’ve heard nothing doesn’t worry me. Out of respect for Omar, Jerry and his staff, there should be as little as possible being reported until the end of the season.
