This Day In Mets Infamy With Rusty: The ” Get Angry !!! ” Edition 09-25-10

First off all I have to say is that is it any wonder why us Mets fans are angry at the apathetic way this team has been playing in the last week or so? I mean I would think that this team would sink their teeth in the role of spoiler against both the Braves and the Phillies – but no this team has rolled over like my basset hound, Flash does when he is outside in the summer heat !

I know that what Chase Utley did last night was not really considered a “dirty” play even though he went balls out in trying to disrupt Ruben Tejada from turning the double play. Just like the way he doesn’t try to bail out of the batters box when a pitch is coming inside at him. His philosophy is ” Hey if the ump isn’t going to call it I’ll continue to do it !” That’s his prerogative , as it was both Jerry Manuel and Pedro Feliciano’s prerogative not to brush him back or nail him in his bad hip when he came up for his next at bat. I personally think that Jerry lost a great opportunity to rally the troops in these last 10 games to try to play like the team that they are capable of being – To at least finish the season above .500. But this team has shown that they couldn’t care less, but you know something ? This isn’t anything new, this team has lacked swagger since August of ’07 when the bullpen started to meltdown signaling the epic collapse that still reverberates to this day ! This team is lacking the hard nosed take no prisoner leadership that we had in ’06. When Floyd and LoDuca weren’t resigned and Jose Valentin wasn’t able to comeback from injury, the Mets lost their “enforcers” – the guys fiery guys that took no crap and dished back whatever was thrown at them ! This team just takes the abuse like a wimp being beaten on by a bully. And you have to wonder what kind of learning experience this is for our rookie. In these scenarios are they learning just to roll over and play dead ? Or will they get angry and start playing with passion and determination? I honestly hope it is the latter, but it is obvious that a new voices are needed in the clubhouse as well as the upper ranks of the front office and in the managerial and coaching positions. If not well then we will really slip back into the bad old days when no player wanted to be a Met – and no person wanted to be a Mets fan !

” You  have to get angry !!!

And with that said… HERE COMES THE INFAMY !!!!

Birthday wishes go out to spot starter/long reliever from the ’66 team,Bill Hepler (1945) .

Set up man from ’02-’04 team,Dave Weathers is 41,(1969).

Runner up in the honorary Ruben Gotay hit and field award contest, Argenis Reyes is 28 (1982).

Mo Vaughn was arrested for vomiting on the Phillie Phanatic last night after eating 30 Philly cheese steak sandwiches.

And don’t be so depressed , after tonight’s game there will be only eight more games with Jerry Manuel as the Mets Manager !!!

Let’s take Jerry out of this equation. The players didn’t need his sanction on this. Heck, he shouldn’t have even been consulted on this.
Collectively, the players should have dealt with it. Plunk him on his bad hip, as you said. You wanna play, you’re gonna pay – kind of mindset.

Now, it’s morphed into something it should not have. Might even have the umps giving each team a ‘warning’ before the game. IMO, the time to have come back was in last night’s game.

That being said…I’ll be watching tonight to see what, if anything, happens.

like i said – this team lacks fire and guts
      end of story
Dickey even looked ashamed to be a met last night in his post game interview

It will be somehow fitting when the Mets, after a group consultation over tea and cookies, enact their “better late than never” revenge and it goes horribly wrong resulting in a serious injury either to a Phillies player making the Mets, already baseball’s laughingstock, baseballl’s pariah, or worse resulting in a long term serious debilitating injury to their own player in his well after the fact attempt.

The best thing about this slow motion car crash of a team is that the crushed totaled car has almost rolled to a halt.

“I personally think that Jerry lost a great opportunity to rally the troops in these last 10 games to try to play like the team that they are capable of being”

That ship has long since sailed my fellow author. All we can do is sit back and know that the end to this final chapter of what has been bad season will soon be over and wait for the new book that is this off season in hopes that it becomes a much better read.

one big reason to have dumped jerry already and put in an interim guy. At least that way, you would have someone interested in the performance, since they are gunning to keep the job.

Right on the money Rusty and I am sorry I was in denial for so long.

This group is thinking about golf courses and beaches and has been since mid-July.

A revolting, embarrassing display of quitting.

    1. stickguy

must have been that trip to P.R., put them in off season mode!

      1. kingman 26

        HAHA! Never thought of that!

        Sad, but funny.

        Nah, just sad.

        :-)

But hey, big game for the Dolphins and the Nets are about to get Carmelo, so the Mets will NOT ruin my sports year again!

        1. wannybackstra

they certainly seem content with losing. but i’m pretty sure they had no chance to sustain the first half success considering it was largely spearheaded by guys like francoeur and barajas playing well over their heads.

          1. kingman 26

Agreed, but it wasn’t even close to a “half” of success—it was really just a 5-week period.

From May 22 through winning 2 of 3 at home vs Det and Min they went 22-9.

Prior to that they were 20-23.

            Since then they are 31-46.

So, other than that 5-week aberration, this is a 51-69 team over precisely 3/4 of a season, which grades out to about 69-93 overall without the 5-week anomaly.

In other words, precisely what they were in 2009 with all the injuries, except for one 5-week period. Which included sweeps of the Phils–and Marlins, Indians, and Orioles.

This team is actually much, much worse than most of us think.

          2. kingman 26

            Should read:

            20-23
            23-9
            31-47

Not that it matters remotely, but those are the correct tales of the pathetic tape.

          3. stickguy

you still don’t get to parse out a season like that. All the games and the final record are what count.

          4. kingman 26

Hey, I can parse the season out any way I like!!

            :-)

            But seriously, uh, no kidding.

            That’s largely my point.

            They SUCK.

They played well for 5 weeks out of about 26 weeks. Can you dispute that? The point is that suggesting that this is really a .500 team is just not true. They had 5 good weeks, and one of those was against BAL and CLE!

They won’t win TRS’ 85-88, they won’t win my 83, and they won’t even win your 80.

            This is a bad team.

Suggesting that the Royals and the Pirates are really bad like TRS and Ceetar do really means less than nothing.

We spend among the highest, and we cannot even win 80 games. We suck.

Everyone other than Wright can go, and go far, far away as far as I am concerned. Keep Dickey and Pagan, even though Pagan is nowhere near as good as many think, but other than that, keep no one over about age 26.

It’s fresh start time. The idea that the team needs “one bat” or “one arm” is a joke. The team needs to play kids everywhere but 3B and 1-2 OF spots next year and see what we have.

It’s rebuilding time. July-Sept have shown that beyond any reasonable doubt.

          5. stickguy

Everyone? You don’t even want to keep neise, or ike? You expect to get young players that are even better than these guys?

and if you are seriously burning the place to the ground, Pagan should be one of the first ones to go, if he can get a decent player back.

Pagan is valuable for the mets next year if they are trying to win. If they are punting 2011 and rebuilding, with 2012 the first year to maybe add some FA types to try and be competitive, pagan is a luxury. might as well go with duda/evans in RF

          6. kingman 26

OK, I know that comment was FAR too long, so please re-read this paragraph:

“Keep Dickey and Pagan, even though Pagan is nowhere near as good as many think, but other than that, keep no one over about age 26.”

I believe Ike and Niese are in this group. Under age 26 that is.

I want Beltran, Ollie, Slappy, Reyes, and the entire bullpen other than Parnell and KRod gone.

          7. stickguy

you gotta be clear man, come on!

          8. kingman 26

            Sorry tSkci!

I did think that players under age 23 were clearly under age 26!

            :-)

I am happy with every kid.

I want Johan, Dickey, Pelf, Niese, Mejia, Gee, Parnell, Thole, Ike, Murphy, Tejada, Wright, Bay, Pagan, FMart, Duda, Kirk, and Evans to all either be on the team or be given every chance. KRod probably needs to be closer and Blanco probably should be number 2 behind Thole.

I am pretty sure everyone else can go.

Beltran, Slappy, Ollie, Reyes, Carter, Hessman, Misch, Feliciano, Hernandez, Arias, and the entire pen other than Parnell and KRod can all go. Pedro can stay if he is not overpriced, as he will never get righties out.

Of course, only Reyes if we can get fair value for him.

          9. wannybackstra

            agreed, Knog.

an organizations tone (attitude) starts at the top, and filters down. Although in the situation of a BB team, you really have 2 “tops” to key off of, the FO and the manager.

unfortunately, the Mets seem screwed right now with a dysfunctional and passive (passive aggressive?) FO, and a manager that seems like he spent too much time at woodstock, and hasn’t straightened out yet.

I am very anxious to see the new FO mind (and please, structure) ASAP.

  6. stickguy

repost from last night, but IMO worth the read.

Clearest explanation of the Met FO structure I have ever seen. And something that really cements the idea that they need a “heavy hitter” to come in and rebuild the organization. not just a new GM to plug into the rube goldberg-ness of the current one!

And forget about cutting payroll. Sounds like they have so many gadflys running around mucking up the works, that letting the new Guru clean house will save enough for at least 1 more SP!
