This Day In Mets Infamy With Rusty : The ” Will Omar Be the Last Man Standing ?” Edition 09-28-10

I admit that as a Mets fans i am a knee jerk reactionist. But when your team hasn’t won a World Series in 24 years it is certainly understandable why many of us have grown impatient. So I guess you could picture my disgust with the recent news of former Padres G.M , Kevin Towers being hired by the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Diamondbacks will most likely retain interim G.M ( and possible Mets G.M candidate) Jerry Dipoto in some capacity within the organization.
Recent reports also suggest the another man who tops the Mets off season wish list, Rangers General Manager Jon Daniels intends on staying in Texas rather than opt out of his contract.

So here we go, two top candiadates that Mets fans would kill to have as their G.M is  apparently off the market, and potential candidates are either still hired by other organizations , or just don’t want the challenge of being the Mets G.M.

I know that it is speculation, but when you read the tea leaves it seems likely that Omar Minaya will be given one last chance next season. I don’t get the feeling that the Mets will turn to a John Hart,a Pat Gillick , or even J.P Ricciardi. There are some fine baseball executives – Kim Ng of the Dodgers comes to mind but I feel the Mets want someone with experience within the role.

In My opinion I think the Mets lure either Sandy Alderson or Stan Kasten into the organization as the buffer between Omar and the ownership. Could it work ? I guess – but it could also add to the bureaucracy and anarchy that is prevalent in this organization.
So my fellow Mets fans , cross your fingers , polish your lucky horseshoe and throw salt over your left shoulder . Because we might need all the help that we can get !!

" Will we have Omar to kick around next season?"

And with that said…. HERE COMES THE INFAMY !!!!!

Happy Birthday wishes go out to former reserve catcher from the ’84 – ’85 team , Ronn Reynolds (1958) .

Middle reliever from ’04-’05 , Mike DeJean is 40 (1970) .

Mo Vaughn is getting ready to hibernate.

And after tonight’s game against the Brewers, there will be just six more games until Jerry Manuel becomes the ex manager of the New York Mets !

Rusty I am afraid you may once again be right on the money.

I see the team giving Omar another year and bringing in Wally–Wally is cheap, he will please/distract the fans, and oh yeah, he’s fiery!

I cannot imagine Mo will begin hibernation before Thanksgiving–if so, what will we do to lower the turkey population this year??

Could be wishful thinking on my part, but I definitely think Omar’s gone.

What’s even sadder – or scarier, depending on how you look at it, is I don’t know if the Wilpons would even recognize a good GM if he fell in their laps.

Nothing would surprise me at this point but if they retain Omar as GM good luck selling that to the fans.

I think at this point they have to have heard the groundswell from the fan base (especially the ones that buy season tickets) about Omar and Jerry. No one that isn’t 100% scenile could miss that!

And I expect they may have a little help from their buddy Selig with the choice. It is good for MLB for the Mets to be relevant.

taking the devil’s advocate role, if your scenerio plays out (kasten in, omar stays), it may not be such a disaster. Or at least, better than what we have now.

Yes, I have a reason, so stop cursing at me.

Kasten (I am much less familiar with Andersens rep) at least have the rep of being a controll guy, as in he will be running the ship. So if he comes in with a mandate to “fix” the organization, and is allowed to do it, they may finally give a clear, buck stops here decision making process.

Plus. he hopefully is allowed to clear out a bunch of the gadflys and special advisors and asst. ass whipers the Met FO seems to be full of. And fill many of the remaining (needed) slots with qualified (and of course, his!) people.

And yes, this will minimize the role of JEffy, etc.to more of what “normal” owners have.

If this scenerio plays out, it is (like MC speculated) the 2-headed idea of a sr. BB guy, with a Jr. GM executing assignments under orders of the “vision”. and really, the GM wil be less important than the big guy, and Omar would actually likely be adequate at the job.

to finish, even if the “big Cahuna” concept happens, I would still love to see a fresh GM come in to work with him (Ng, Dipoto, someone at that level) to build for the future (a bigger role), but if something like kastens/omar (with Kastens actually running the operation) is the best we can get, I will take it.

oh, and a real, honest restructuring.

that to me will be better than the same dysfunctional structure, overbearing Paris, and a new (but green) GM the will be expected to be seen but not heard.

I agree with the premise. I too would rather see him gone but to me if they do it this way then Omar is just GM in theory.

      1. stickguy

and if the speculation that he is just GM in theory now are true, at least he would be the puppet of someone that has a much better clue about what they are doing!

Thing is though…how many layers are needed? Isn’t that just extra money better spent elsewhere?
What other teams have this many layers – advisers to advisers to GMs?

          1. Mr North Jersey

That is actually an interesting question 4d.

          2. TRS86

Not sure about the adviser to the GM, I do think that number is increasing. Don’t we already have one of those? I know that technically Davey Johnson is in Washington.

          3. stickguy

well, the premise is if you bring in a real heavy hitter, you can get rid of a bunch of the filler crap sucking up resources.

So while it might be adding another layer (and not even that, if you look at it as pushing Paris “upstairs”), you are potentially eliminating other layers and offshoots.

Or at least, hopefully you do, unless they keep all the cronies ont he payroll anyway.

Ive always said omar had the best chance to come back out of anyone…not great odds but better than everyone else. Whats wrong with omar’s assistant(I forget his name..kevin something)

    1. stickguy

John Ricco is asst. GM. Then they got that wayne Krivnsky (sp?) as some kind of special advisor.

what the hell do all the hacks in that FO do anyway?

      1. Mr North Jersey

        Besando Culo Que Mas?

        1. stickguy

Yes Jeff, your new hair style does look great on you!

  5. GravediggerHebner

I must be reading different tea leaves because mine are leaning heavily toward Omar being at least reassigned if not dismissed entirely. But hey that’s why New York has so many different tea leaves!

    1. asod75

I agree Grave. While I would certainly accept having Omar being basically a puppet GM working under a guy like Kasten (although I prefer Omar gone entirely), Johnny Average Metfan might not pay attention as much as we do here and would still see Omar employed, occupying the GM title. I tend to think there are more Average Joe Metsfans than complete blog every day diehards like all of us here on this fine site. Bringing Omar back in any capacity would be viewed as a bad move by many Mets fans.
