Omar And Jerry To Be Let Go Monday?

According to Matt Pignataro at the blog 7 Train to Shea, the Mets will immediately announce on Monday that Omar Minaya has been fired and that Jerry Manuel will not return. http://7traintoshea.com/?p=2128

This info comes thanks to our friend Matt Cerrone at Metsblog, who says “Pignataro has proven to have some solid sources in the past.”

Should this turn out to be true, it could indeed mean that the silent Wilpons do realize the distress much of the fan base is suffering through, and that there will be no waiting period before serious action is undertaken.

Stay tuned to TRDMB for more info as it becomes confirmed.

The only reason the Wilpon’s realize anything is when 7000 people show up to a double header where one game is free yesterday.

If 25000 folks were still showing up it would be business as usual. I can’t even imagine what the drop in season tickets will be this year.

obvoiusly a major drop in attendence has an impact (and is 100% a direct result of a 2nd losing season in a row). But I really don’t believe they are so oblivious to what is going on with the team and the fans to just carry on with all the same crew, like everything is fine.

You really think ownership will slash ticket prices ?

They are in a bind. They have a huge payroll to cover and I’m sure the cost of running that stadium aint too cheap. But how the hell are they going to get fans to pay all that money to extend those seasons tickets? Most of the corporate tickets will hold but I am sure with the recession and what is on the field, there will be many folks thinking they can cancel the tickets for a couple years and pick them back up if the team starts to turn around.

Maybe the ticket face might not reduce all that much but they are going to have to get awfully creative on promotions which is just a indirect discount.

I doubt it but I hope you are right

if they want to suck the seasons people back in, they may just have to offer a much better discount as an enticement. That, an make some more favorable plans.

The phils do something that I have no idea if the Mets tried. They have a “make your own” plan. You get to pick IIRC 2 “prime” games, then a certain number of other games (probably wi a few exceptions, like the other primes) to make your own DIY season pack. Not sure of the discount though.

but the president said the recession is over!

          1. saltygary

No a random group of experts said the recession was over.

            As of a year ago!

As someone who works for a software company whose product is to manage delinquent accounts for banks, saying the recession is over is a big reach. We are up from the bottom but so many people are hurting and will continue to hurt for a long time.

          4. stickguy

well, since recession is really an esoteric economics calculation.

            Employment though, that is real!

Monday makes sense. It is not like they haven’t been discussing the need for change for a long time (since plenty of reports said there was internal debate after last season about giving jeryr and omar 1 more shot). And certainly this year they have had the opportunity for planning already!

so, it would be mind boggling (even for this operation) to think they have not already come to a decision on how to procede, and it makes no sense to drag it out announcing it.

Now, it might be surprising if they announce the new GM monday, but hopefully that gets done soon, so they can get on with the business of the off seaosn.

I am currently leaning toward Hart as the Sr. BB guru/executive GM type, with him bringing in his next protege (after daniels and shapiro) to be the “grunt” executing his plans.

      I agree.
And here’s hoping they have a plan ready to put into place. Last thing I want to be reading about in Dec/Jan is they still don’t have a new GM. The thought of Jeff trying to make off season deals is scary…

        A 4D sighting! Hi 4D

Don’t you hate when work gets in the way of all things Mets? LOL.

manager is no hurry. they can wait until next year, and it won’t make any real difference.

The GM though, that has to be done ASAP. Decisions have to start being made (offering arbitration, dealing with FAs, etc.) So like next week.

actually, this would have been the best reason (getting a head start) to have someone in already (unless, of course, they do), but they would have also limited the pool of outsiders (eliminating guys under contract).

        1. njstuckintx

Agreed. I’d give them 2 weeks tops to fill that position. Ideally it’s measured in days, vs. weeks.

  3. CaseStreet

I can see Jerry getting fired but not Omar. At most, Omar will remain with the club in another position.

    1. stickguy

NO special reason, but I am thinking it is a lot less likely now that Omar stays. I predict they go with the clean break, not that I have any sources on the inside. Just my gu. Hey, it worked for Jerry (oh wait, maybd it didn’t work…)

there were rumors some months ago that jeffy is barely civil with omar these days.

i don’t want omar back but i also wonder which of jeffy and omar are the chicken and the egg.

      1. stickguy

you may be finding out, since jeffy isn’t going anywhere.

or maybe not, if they do hire a heavy hitter GM, Jeffy will almost certainly have to take a step back, at least to start with.

        Grilled chicken omelets for everyone!
