Rosanne a danna a danna might have heard Jeff and asked:

“What’s all this need for nude leadership”

Well, Bernazard was half way there after all….

I am spent. I pretty much been running around trying to find any relevant video or audio content I could find and in the end I think this is a record day for me as far as doing that.

Funny thing though is that I thought there would be a lot of talk on the site with the announcement but it’s been a rather quiet day on the site.

    Not sure why?

    1. hazmet

Yeah, I came here to read all the reactions and it’s really light. I think everyone’s out shopping for wedding gifts for Ceetar :)

      1. Mr North Jersey

That would explain a lot. :-)

i find it hard to believe that Omar didnt approach the Wilpons to eat Ollie or Castillo’s contract. He can’t be that inept.

    1. Mr North Jersey

Well it has been aid that Minaya is very loyal to his people. Could it be that he believed in Ollie?

Maybe it would not look good for Minaya to go to ownership and say we need to eat this salary after he told them he felt ollie was worth the money when they signed him.

      just kickin stuff around.

      1. stickguy

I thought that by the time everything unravelled with Ollie (at the same time the season pretty much went bust) it made no sense to just cut him. Past the trade deadline, so might as well at that point just hold onto him and try to get some value in the off season.

That, and Omar probably was a bit loyal/stubborn too about admitting a bad signing.

after 1 day of poking around various sites, I am officially overtired of hearing comments about the wilpons. THey own the team, if they want to kibitz, it’s there money. Any decent GM has to have a bulldog personality and a tough hide. If they say something stupid, just tell them it is a bad idea, and move on.

It should not make that much of a difference if they reserve the right of final approval, which is far different frmo the perception that they are out making deals on their own, and picking players for the GM.

As long as the veto power only comes out for “earthshattering” ideas, like the many acquisition someone (elsewhere) used to prove that the idea of a GM having actual authority is bunk.

Any GM, even Theo, cashman, or any of the golden gods of GM dom would have to get the OK form ownership to sign a CC level contract, or trade for a lightning rod like Bonds or Manny.

I don’t have that FOX Tim Roth character to tell me whether the Wilpons were being truthful today but for the sake of discussion I’m going to assume they were being so.

Given that assumption, I feel much more after today’s events like Omar just wasn’t good at his job over the long haul and less like he was hamstrung by ownership.

Of course the whole press conference today could have been well orchestrated to make me think that.

But with the whole “we don’t release players the GM does and he never approached us about releasing anyone” and with Jeff’s repeated statement about how a new GM “won’t have any attachments to any player that he may have signed” I take from that, again assuming it’s straightforward, that Omar was either unable to recognize a mistake or unwilling to go to any great lengths to rectify those he did recognize.

If you have an Oliver Perez-situation it seems fairly obvious that one of the many options for dealing with it is to release him and if it’s true Omar never approached the Wilpons about doing so that’s just astounding to me. “I thought they would just say no” isn’t a good enough reason not to at least bring it up so I pray that wasn’t why he didn’t.

how about this scenario to make you feel better about the future.

The wilpons are really just kindly old codgers that like to kibitz with their team. And Omar was too nice to tell them to butt out, and too lousy as a GM to work with them.

So, the new guy will have a fantastic plan that will blow them away, and the balls to tell them to back off and let him run the show.

See how much better you feel now?

      1. GravediggerHebner

I already felt better but thank you I always appreciate attempts to make me feel even better still when I’m already feeling better.

Pretty much the only time I don’t appreciate such attempts are when I’m wallowing in misery and not ready to accept them but that is not the case today.

After the events of today I feel pretty good and the only thing that would/could change that is if today is somehow revealed to have been a complete sham – but I do not think/feel/expect that is going to happen.

I could be wrong about that. Last year’s end of season press event was ultimately made into a sham but given the events of today I believe the fault for that lies with the GM not ownership. Only time will tell if that’s true or not but for now that’s what I believe.

some guy on cbs sports (miller?) has a pretty big slam piece on Jeffy up. Bottom line, said that this year, he pretty much took over as de facto GM and made omar’s life miserable.

But, that still leaves Omar on the hook for 2007-2009.

and the question becomes, why did he become overly involved this year? and more important, what does he plan to do ongoing?

right or wrong, maybe felt he “had” to step in to “save” the team from Omar.

and quite possible, he learned a harsh lesson about A) how hard the job is, and B) how ill prepared he was for it.

combine that with all the media bashing, and calling him out, and it is extremely likely he would take the opportunity of replacing Omar to actually bring in someone that knows what the hell they are doing and then step back into the background.

Unless he thinks that he just needed to be more involved, and that is hard to believe.

Who is brought in will tell a lot. If it is something like hart/hahn, then you know Jeffy is serious about stepping back. If it ends up being Ricco or some other newbie, maybe not!

admittedly I saw almost none of the pressers (just a few bits that were posted here), and did not read 1/10th of the huge number of pieces written.

But the one thing that seemed oddest to me was how Ricco seems to be Jeffy’s right hand man, and an integral part of the search process.

odd to me on many levels, one obvious one being he has been mentioned as a candidate for the position himself! Unless Jeffy has told him he has a role ongoing, but that is also odd given that the new GM should be making those decisions!

I really want to get through this search process and all the new bodies in place, so we can start concentrating on the team, not the FO.

One good thing about that is at least they’ve got someone they have faith in who can steer them in the right direction on a new GM – one who does know the baseball end of the business and not that the WIlpons are going to attempt that on their own.

Another good thing is that they just didn’t replace Omar with Ricco as I much prefer the idea of bringing in a fresh perspective – one who not only is hopefully highly regarded but has no previous ties to this organization.

      1. stickguy

well, they haven’t done it yet. And I guess the acid test of same old same old, Paris in charge is if the end result is they “couldn’t find anyone better so they went with Ricco”

Couple of thoughts after this eventful day in Met land:

    - First, thanks to who brought all news breaking stories here as quickly as they could find the links. I heard the original Omar interview and follow up Wilpon press conference but not much after that. Busy day at work got in the way.

    - I too came here expecting way more comments on the unfolding events and was kind of surprised on how light they were. Could very well be that we’re all just tired, over it and as we knew it was coming, not surprised at all.

    - I’ve come to the conclusion that I’m going to be cautiously optimistic that the Wilpons are mostly sincere. For the record, I think Fred comes across as a bit more sincere than Jeff does, or may just less defensive.

    - For myself, I came to the conclusion after that July west coast losing road trip that Omar had to go. Nothing short of a new GM was going to get this team back on the track of winning. After to listing and reading the posts put up here today, I’m even more firmly convinced. Stick made a good point about Jeff stepping in b/c he no longer trusted Omar to get things right, even if he knew less about running a ball club than Omar did. Same conclusion I came to in August, which is why I said at the time I wanted them to find the best GM available money could by, that Jeff would trust so he would take a step back. What I’d really like to know is why the firing was so long in coming. They waved the white flag on this season long before I think it was warranted.

    - Rusty: I had ever intention of tuning into the Happy Recap tonight (been sometime since I listened in) but had to go out earlier this evening and didn’t return until a little while ago. I’ll check it out in it’s entirety tomorrow, b/c if I’m not mistaken they do put the most recent ones up on their website.

Here’s to a brighter future for the Mets sooner rather than later!
