Email from the Mets: Omar and Jerry are not part of the solution

As expected I received this email a few minutes ago.

A MESSAGE FROM METS OWNERSHIP

Dear Mets Fans:

Thank you for your support during another extremely disappointing season. Like you, all of us at the Mets had high expectations for 2010 and we did not come close to meeting them. Since reaching the National League Championship Series in 2006, we have underperformed. The failure is unacceptable and we share your anguish.

As Ownership, we are ultimately responsible and have determined that changes are necessary to produce a winning team for the long term.

Earlier this morning, we relieved Omar Minaya of his duties as Executive Vice President of Baseball Operations & General Manager, and advised Jerry Manuel that we are declining to exercise the club’s option on his contract as Manager for 2011. We appreciate all that Omar and Jerry have done for the Organization and thank them for their time and effort. Changes like these are never easy, especially when dealing with people you like and respect.

We feel a fresh perspective in the leadership of our baseball department will elevate the performance of our club. That person will work with Ownership to hire a new Manager and will be responsible for creating a winning culture.

We have a lot of work to do to regain your confidence and support. Thank you for the opportunity to do so.

Well, that makes it official. Watching the story now on SNY.

    So….let the games begin.

For anyone who gets SNY, Omar will address the media shortly.

Wilpon owners will hold a press conference at 1330, which SNY will carry live.

At Mets.com they said “Mets Ownership will meet with the media today at 1:30 p.m. ET in the Press Conference Room at Citi Field to address these changes. ”

Sorry about the format. I hope it’s fixed now.

Wow….SNY showing clips of Jerry and the team in the first days of when he took over. I didn’t quite notice it this past half season, but what a difference in both Jerry and the teams demeanor in those early days from what we’ve watched this year on the ‘Jerry watch’.

I think that will be the most tangible impact going into next season (other than the obvious, better health hopefully!)

Getting new leadership top to bottom will be like a breath of fresh air, and should let the entire team just relax and focus on playing.

Plus, and a big key, they will know that the people in charge are going to be aroudn for a while.

actually, this annoncement does take a lot of the fun out of the off season. Although totally expected, now we have to sit around bored waiting for them to name a new GM, and eventually a manager (though that can wait indefinitely, and is of vastly lower importance).

And once they name the new leader (hopefully within a week or so), months of nothing to do but make up increasingly radical trade proposals! and while I find that quite enjoyable, still not as good as real moves.

Seriously though, I am very curious if the new guy will come in, basiclaly regroup and tweak while looking forward to a major remodel after 2011, or if he will come in and napalm the roster and make huge changes.

To me, given the payroll/.contract situation, they should do as much as reasonable to patch/plug the existing team for 2011 (with the goal to make a run still), and really concentrate on rebuilding the foundation of the organization in 2011, Then use the post-2011 payroll flexibility to add the missing pieces for a sustained run.

hopefully they get it right this time…
