The Sunday Question

Good bye Omar and Jerry, take care and good luck.

This may not be an easy question to answer but I’m throwing it our there as a challenge.

What caused Omar to be dismissed?  Was there a straw that broke the camels back in terms of when Omar was done as GM?  How about Jerry, what did him in as well?  Was is one thing in particular?

I think it was the Wilpon’s seeing a empty citi field in September – that and the fact that it’s been 4 years since we sniffed the playoffs

cumulative effort by both guys. But like Rusty said, empty seats pretending to be fans was a big part of it, although I suspect the decision was made long before that.

I will say getting one more chance (2010) to put a winner on the field, and having the team die in July and freefall the rest of the way iced it.

No doubt that both played a part but let me ask this then.

If the Mets didn’t make the playoffs this season but people did come to games. Do you think Minaya would be fired?

      I do.

Now If the Mets made the playoffs this season but like in Tampa people still didn’t come to games. Do you think Minaya would be fired?

      I don’t.

The point being in my opinion the single biggest factor that they fired him was the 4 years of no playoffs.

I agree that if the season had unfolded exactly the same way, but tickets that were already sold had been used, Omar still would have been axed.

and conceptually, for your 2nd piont, the playoffs probaby would have saved Omar for another year (almost definitely).

But realistically, it never would have happened. If the Mets had been in the playoff race and winning 92+ games, the tickets would have been used (and more sold). Not sure if it would have been packed every night, but there would have been a lot of people there. My HO of course.

There is a big difference – I think based upon the last 2 seasons – and how bad they ended the Wilpon’s had to acknowledge the disenfranchised fan base which stayed away in droves – I disagree – I think if the mets barely missed the post season and attendance rebounded omar’s job would have been safe

      My sentiments as well.

4 years since 2006, empty seats, controversies off the field – leads me to believe the Wilpons, no matter how ‘highly they think of Omar’ trust him to lead this team to post season.

They didn’t label Jerry the ‘great tinkerer’ for nothing. Without a deep talent pool in every position to parade out there day to day, he just kept shuffling the deck hoping something would work – from the lineup to the BP to the SP. Hope or ‘gut’ is not exactly the qualities needed for a ML manager.

I don’t think there was any one obvious straw for the Wilpons that wound up breaking the proverbial camel’s back for Minaya or Manuel (but for me regarding Omar there was that straw it was the Bernazard/Rubin fiasco).

I think for the Wilpons it was the whole package for both gentlemen, a package that ultimately proved unsuccessful for both.

      You mean this???

        Ouch…

I caught that press conference live. I still remember sitting there thinking, ‘oh wow, this is gonna hurt’…..

I was at the game that night – the entire fan base did a collective face palm that night

But…but…Omar’s such a good guy! Never done anything to make us doubt that for a second.

    Over on MLBTR:

Adam Rubin from ESPN New York gives us some insight into the Mets’ managerial situation; potential general manager Sandy Alderson has believed it’s misusing your resources to hire an expensive manager, while Mets owner Fred Wilpon would prefer a manager with previous ties to the Mets.

If that’s true, LaRussa would be out of the running, one would think.

    2. Prismo

      AKA Backman (for both).

      1. asod75

        My thoughts exactly, Prismo.

I concur. Let’s get this locked up in 3-4 days time.

      3. GravediggerHebner

Ironic given that many in Metsland have said “if the next manager is Backman then it means the new GM is a puppet of the Wilpons.”

And if I’m not mistaken, our very own Ceetar’s wedding was/is today.

Congratulations to the bride and groom!

    Enjoy Hawaii.

Well, I know one guy we don’t want to look at for 2nd base next year. That would be the current Braves Brooks Conrad playing 2nd tonight. 3 errors in the game and he just pulled a Bill Buckner to allow the go ahead run for Giants to score in the top of the 9th.
Hmm….wonder if Wags would have closed out the 9th with no drama.

So far NL post season play has feature nothing but stellar pitching and the worst fielding seen in years.

    1. metsfan4decades

‘Brooks Conrad: 1st to make a fielding error (non-throwing) on a hit ball to bring in go-ahead run in 9th or later of postseason game since Buckner.’

      Ouch.

      1. kistics

Feel bad for the guy, but feeling good for the Giants. Phils/Bravos NLCS is a nightmare for us.
