Breaking News: Daniels Says Mets Never Asked Permission To Speak To Him.

Texas Rangers GM Jon Daniels in an interview on WFAN said Mets have yet to formally ask permission to speak with him.

I just figured I’d get it out there 1st since I know many will freak out at hearing this.

OK now you can freak out.

Wow, Ron Washington (Rangers manager) just said “I love him” of Jon Daniels and then listed multiple specific reasons why he loved him.

When the story of Washington’s cocaine use broke he said Daniels “didn’t judge me, he supported me, and that’s the main reason why I love him…I hope that many years from now whatever happens I can call him my friend.”

    Touching.

Makes me think if Daniels considers leaving that Washington will try strongly to convince him to stay.

I was not aware that Washington had a cocaine problem.

In case you haven’t already googled it here is one of the many stories about it:

She don’t lie, she don’t lie, she don’t lie (cocaine)

Thanks Grave. I find this quote speaks a lot to Daniels character.

” Texas general manager Jon Daniels told SI.com on Tuesday night. “We asked a lot of questions and worked through Major League Baseball’s program, where Ron had appropriate consultation, support and testing. But for all the reasons we hired him in the first place, we felt and continued to feel that he’s the right guy to lead the club. He made a significant mistake. He also admitted to it and took steps to ensure that it won’t happen again.”

The Mets shouldn’t ask permission to speak with him until after his team’s season is over anyway.

And Texas would have no obligation to permit him to interview for a lateral position while he’s still under their employ.

It’s an unusual situation. There is nothing unusual about a GM having a team in the post season of course, but this particular one has an out-clause in his contract specifically allowing him to leave in the event of an ownership change, which occurred this season.

Ultimately I believe that the fact his team is in the post season is what will ultimately prevent him from becoming Mets GM because I don’t think the team can afford to wait for his season to be over.

that, and it sounds like the Rangers are going to put on a full court press to keep him. So the Mets would really have to go over the top ($$ wise) to woo him away. Unless he really wants to come back to NY for personal reasons?

still, it makes perfect sense to ask for the interview. He will be in NY anyway, so how hard is it to take a couple of hours during the day to meet with the Mets at his hotel? He is the GM, not like he is actually doing any constructive now, just hanging out, watching the games!

Agreed. I don’t know if he needs permission from the Rangers to be interviewed, but I would guess that it’s unprofessional to ask for someone while they are in the playoffs.

I can see that with a manager, but given the situation it doesn’t seem to be a big faux pas or unreasonable request to spend a few hours of off time with the GM. I could see why the Rangers though might want to delay it!

It is good to see that he was given a chance to manage despite his past. That is a good story indeed.

my God though, could you imagine if the Mets hired Wally, then something like this happened? Somehow, I don’t think a calm, let it blow over (hey, blow, a funny!) response would have gone over too well in NY!

      1. Mr North Jersey

True, You would think not just in NY but anywhere in MLB if any mgr was found to be doing cocaine for the 1st time during the season. ppl would freak out.

I think it speaks volumes of Daniels that he could look past that. I have nothin but respect for him to be able to do so.

        1. stickguy

sadly though, many fans would just post that the only reason he was kept was that the Coupons were too cheap to let him go and pay a replacement!

As someone who is no fan of the Yankees I can only hope that the Yankees players are as concerned with this alleged substance on Cliff Lee’s cap as their fans are because their fans are insanely concerned about this story which came out of nowhere.

hahahaha I have to say Grave that is the hi-lite of my day on WFAN.

Just saw your tweet on the left asking where this hat thing started with Lee. The first I heard was from Michael Kay on his show yesterday. He said that the Yanks should do that to get under Lee’s skin. They did that with Pedro and worked, so he suggested that Yankees do that to Lee.

        1. Mr North Jersey

thx kistics. considering the source I hope they do that if only to watch Lee get in their heads if he then goes out and shuts them out.

          1. kistics

Also Kay mentioned that if the Yanks pisses Lee off, he might not sign with the Yanks after this season. Which is a great news for us!

Rangers should ask the ump to check CC to see if he is loading up the ball with lard from his belly roll.

here’s the link to his podcast from yesterday’s show

I noted that Lee hat watching that pitching performance the other day and the first thing that came to mind was ‘Dirty Sanchez’.

The second was….wonder if that’s more than just dirt on that ball cap?
