This Day In Mets Infamy With Rusty: The ” Songs To Celebrate To !” Edition 10-21-10

" Dead and loving it !!!"

Here I stand on the outside of the League Championship Series looking in. My team – The New York Mets didn’t even come close to being in post season contention . But none the less I am smiling. “ Why you May ask?” No it’s not gas or that I found out that they have found the lost episodes of Mork and Mindy . No I have this s&%t eating grin on my face because the two teams that I hate more than Ollie Perez himself . The Yankees and Phillies – are on the verge of elimination that will hopefully send the spiralling into baseball oblivion ( or at least their collective arrogant and obnoxious fan bases) !

So to mark this (hopefully) joyous occasion I have trotted out the ten best songs to celebrate their demise.

10. Celebrate (Dance To The Music): 3 Dog Night - Hey we need to start off with a funky song !!

09. Too Much Too Little Too Late : Johnny Mathis, Denise WilliamsNothing like a slow jam while watching Jimmy Rollins sulk !

08. In My Time Of Dying : Led ZeppelinGreat song to whistle to Yankee fans !

07. When The Music’s is Over : The Doors

06. Seasons In The Sun : Terry JacksI just want to annoy the hell out of Phillies and Yankee fans

05. The Ewok Victory Song: Return of the Jedi Sound track – 2 WORDS – YUB YUB !!!

04. We Will Rock You/ We Are The Champions : Queen - The quintessential screw you song !

03. Fade to Black : Metallica - It will be nice to see that happen to both the Yankees and Phillies seasons !

02. 1812 Overture : Peter TchaikovskyHas there ever been a better song to relay the emotions of victory ??!!??

The answer is a resounding yes, because number one song to celebrate the demise of the Yankees and Phillies seasons is drum roll please !!!
Na Na Na Kiss Him Goodbye by Steam !!! Yes the song that sends Dread into the hearts of every opposing team on the ledge of elimination is the number one song on my I-Pod if and when my two least favorite teams lose ( hopefully ) !!!

And with that said… HERE COMES THE INFAMY !!!

Happy Birthday Dickey Gonazlez (1978) !! Dickey was a spot starter/ mop up man for the ’01 Mets . In 16 with the Mets he went 3-2 with a e.r.a of 4,88.

Mo Vaughn has won a life time supply of Rice A Roni !!!

The tide is turning. There is no dynasty in the Bronx. Reading across several blogs how the Yankees are not playing with that confidence, with that ‘swagger’ (for those that believe in it) that they did last year. They’re an aging team who are now playing without Texiara.

The Phils are exactly who I thought they were all year. Another aging team with great pitching and a little bit of luck – who always seemed to be riding that luck, and now that luck is about to run out.

Even with that Yankee win yesterday I still see the Rangers winning the series even if it does go to game 7. They’ll have to beat Cliff Lee and the odds on doing that aren’t good.

Unlike last year when nothing looked like it could stop either the Phills or the Yankees, I’m enjoying the heck out of these series this year.

I am just giddy with excitement – it was great seeing Cholly Manuel squirm last night

Just goes to show about Managers…..With all Charlie’s success and
as much as the players love him is really very ordinary.
How does one use Blanton instead of Halladay down 2-1 in the series?
Then, why not bring in your other starter Kendrick if you can’t get
Blanton through 5?….Then, he brings in Oswalt anyway in the 9th?

    1. kistics

Because Blanton is due $8.5M for the next 2 seasons!!

      1. TRS86

        8.5? Try 10.5.

        1. kistics

I think $10.5 includes the signing bonus. Cot’s has it as $10.5 on the spreadsheet, but $8.5 for the contract itself and $6M signing bonus.

          Whatever it is….. puhahahahaha!

          but then we have Ollie….

  3. njstuckintx

    Yub Yub indeed.

  4. njstuckintx

So… Sandy’s got another interview today? Did I read that correctly?

    1. rustyjr

It’s supposed to be a continuation of part one of the interview

      1. njstuckintx

Wouldn’t that be interview #2 then? Anyway, that’s just semantics. Hopefully he’ll knock some socks off and they can firm this up by Friday/Saturday, IE, before the World Series, so we can get the “sign Taka, Extend Dickey (Max-o-derm!), start operation jettison of the dead wood, etc.” into action!

    2. metsfan4decades

      According to Joel Sherman yesterday:

“I continue to hear that short of Sandy Alderson completely tanking (tomorrow) he is going to be the Mets’ next GM… The sense of those I have spoken to is that Alderson is way more than just a frontrunner for the position. He is not a sure thing, but pretty darn close to it.”

Don’t jinx it Rusty. Don’t want to piss off the Karma gods with premature celebration!

But, while they can certainly still turn it around, the Phils are starting to look just a bit worn out. And if (when) werth goes next year, it will be interesting to see how much that impacts them.

Heck, who would have thought that the vaunted mashing Phils could end up being the 1973 Mets next year! OK, that might be a little too much. But the idea stands (a team with a few good hitters, riding the front end of the rotation).

I just hope the Giants finish this off tonight, so the Philly fans don’t get another chance to impact the series.

    1. kistics

Stick – you’re from Philly area, right?

How popular is Hole Camels with the fan and the team? It looks like his contract is up after next season and has there been any discussion of trading him? Just curious…

      1. stickguy

maybe love/hate? A lot of people just don’t seem to like him, but they put it aside when he is hot. But, as soon as he has a bad game or stretch, they like to dump on him.

But, have never heard any rumor about moving him.

        1. kistics

TRS talked about how their payroll is going to be pretty high next season. If they have no intention of resigning him (I would assume he’s going to be looking for a long term deal), with their strong 1-2 combo, it could be an option to trade him. I’m sure he can bring some cheap talents back. But then it’s not really my business =)

          1. stickguy

I forget when he is a FA, but Oswalt is only singed through 2011 (team option for 2012) and Blanton for either 1 or 2 after this. Given the age of the front of the rotation, I don’t see him going anywhere.

Is the blogoshphere getting to be like political ads? From metserized:

“I thought everything that could be said on the matter was said, until I came across this post by Matt Cerrone on MetsBlog yesterday in which he wrote,

Davis is far superior in the field than Fielder, he’ll hit five or so less home runs, he’ll have less walks but also less strike outs, and he’ll show a lot more athleticism, youth and give you more money to spend on other positions… not to mention, it will cost additional young talent to get Fielder here in the first place.

I had to read it a few times to be sure I wasn’t missing something, but the comparison made between Ike and Prince is way off… I mean way, way off… I mean like way out there in a different galaxy off.”

    1. TRS86

But are they? When you factor in age, contract, and SIZE?

    2. njstuckintx

Well, when you can’t chat about actual happenings in the Mets world, why not venture into the odd? Talent wise, Fielder > Ike. Cost wise, Ike > Fielder. So, Matty Boy is way over-rating Ike in comparison to Fielder on Offensive ability, Fielder’s D isn’t shabby at all (he actually impressed me with his quickness and glove) but the $$$ and the prospects to acquire him totally overshadow the difference in ability between the two, especially withing the current status of the Mets payroll “whoa’s”, if you call a payroll over 120 mil whoa-ful.

So, to Cliffnote this. Much ‘Ado about nothing.

      1. metsfan4decades

        Fielder is much more established.
So far, Ike’s defense is better. He had the best ratings of any NL 1st baseman last year. Might be the best in both leagues.

His offense though at the ML level is yet to be determined, IMO.
Fielder’s is obviously far superior at this point.

I still wouldn’t do that trade.

        1. njstuckintx

I wouldn’t either. It’s rare that men of his size age well, if that makes sense.

That hitch in Ike’s swing worries me, but he did show some signs of improvement with a change in his stance in the last 2-3 series, so with the proper tutelage (aka, not the HoJo), I’m hopeful he can turn into a .270/.280 power hitting 1B with well above average D. And at his current salary, you don’t let that dude go. Maybe for David Price… Sorry, was day dreaming there for a sec.

          1. metsfan4decades

Every time Ralph Kiner was in the booth, he mentioned that hitch in Ike’s swing. Said he was much more impressed with Duda’s swing – it was more natural and more indicative of someone who would have long term success at the ML level.

He even went on to imply that Ike knew about that hitch but was being stubborn about changing it. I sure hope he was wrong about that.

  7. fongy2

    Prince Fielder is 26 years old, is a .280 hitter w/ a .385obp and
192hr&536rbi in his first five seasons. He’s a true clean-up hitter
and one of the most feared presence in the game.
He’s also a pretty solid 1Bman from what I’ve seen.
Can we stop already and just be happy with what Ike is???
I said it b/f he arrived, Ike Davis IS Adam LaRoche!…..Nothing wrong
    with THAT…….BUT Prince Fielder???….C’mon now!!!

    1. kistics

I don’t think anyone is debating the fact Fielder is more established/feared hitter than Ike. But factoring in Fielder’s body type, contract situation/salary, defense, required talent to trade for him, etc, keeping Ike would be the better solution for the Mets at this stage.

      1. njstuckintx

        yup.

    2. njstuckintx

If I could flat out swap the 2, Prince would be in a Met’s Uni in no time. I hate having to factor in the salary aspect, but it is what it is. If so much of what was needed on the Mets wasn’t pitching (where, in my mind, they need to throw about every available dollar towards), I’d say make a move for Fielder, for as you say, he’s the quintessential cleanup hitter.

And like I mentioned above somewhere, his D really impressed me the last time they played our Mets.

Who’s Fielder represented by? Not Boras, is it?

      1. kistics

        Yes Boras

        1. njstuckintx

          ick.

      2. fongy2

We have ALOT of problems going foward.
        1B, C, SS, 3B & LF aren’t any of them.
Our new GM needs to worry about the problems, Pitching,
2B and what to do about Beltran…..Not to mention getting
Wright, Reyes & Pelf signed long-term.
Having Fielder instead of Ike doesn’t turn us into a Championship
        team…….So…..What’s the point???

        1. kistics

I think everyone agrees with that.

    3. TRS86

I don’t think anyone is saying he is better. Just saying that considering age, contract and size that Ike is as valuable long-term.

  8. njstuckintx

Fongy, Is it Kah-nog that’s a fish fan? Looking forward to the beatdown that Roethlisouhlfihaodnigoiadburger is gonna take to ‘em.

    1. fongy2

Yeah….And they just got bad news with local guy Odrick now out
for the season. Big Ben should be able to put points up against
their D, which isn’t great. I’m just hoping our O-coordinator
continues to allow us to run the ball at least half the time and
not call passing plays every down.

  9. fongy2

Hey, I hope everyone has a great day, nice weekend and should I
not check back again until next week, hopefully Sandy Alderson
with already be named our GM and Wally Backman our next Mgr…..
AND The Rangers will be playing The Giants in the World Series!
    Until then………Lets Go Mets!!!
    ……Oh……And …………………..Here we go Steelers…..Here we go!

    1. TRS86

I can agree with all of those except one (and it’s not the Steelers part).

      1. njstuckintx

You don’t want everyone to have a nice weekend?

        1. TRS86

          Uh… correct.

  10. TRS86

“There is too much to lose, especially with a new ballpark, a TV network and a fan base tinkering on total disinterest.”

Wow. I did not know I was tinkering with disinterest.
