Oh Yesterday was indeed a glorious day !!! First I sensed fear in the voice of faux Mets fan turned Yankees fraud Craig Carton, when he was trying to convince himself that the Yankees would will themselves into the World Series ( too bad you didn’t lock that up you third rate Howard Stern clone !).
Next up was the self ordained ” Sports Pope“, Mike Francessa, was caught with his size 52 waist pants down when he defied a caller to name one caller to name one Mets catcher who could hit in the clutch. The caller responded ” Ummm Mike Piazza for one!” This did something that I haven’t heard in a long time – a caller was allowed to make a fool out of the fat man as he was stopped dead in his tracks !! Also correct answers are Jerry Grote, John Stearns, Todd Hundly and Todd Pratt ( ’99 NLCS against the Diamondbacks).
Next I actually watched game six in it’s entirety, which is something I generally don’t do unless the Mets are involved, But I had to see the Yankees get eliminated in real time – and with the exception of the lousy call by the home-plate umpire which allowed A-Roid to score on that wild pitch it – it was almost a letter perfect game – kudos to journeyman pitcher Colby Lewis ! How appropriate was it for Alex Rodriguez to end the game striking out ? It just made the smile on my face grow even bigger. But the biggest source of joy that I had was watching the Michael Kay meacupla afterwards, I almost fell over in laughter.
But now that the series has been played and the better of the two teams advanced to the final World Series , I have a few choice words of wisdom for all the arrogant Yankee fans out there - NEVER UNDER ESTIMATE YOUR OPPONENT !!!

”HEY HEY HEY ! GOODBYE !!!”
And with that said…. HERE COMES THE INFAMY !!!!!
Celebrating birthdays today are:
One time Mets pitching prospect whose career was cut short by rotator cuff surgery, Randy Tate (1952)
One of the better pitcher to ever wear a Mets jersey, Al Leiter is 45 (1965) . I still can’t understand why Al is still booed til this day, it’s not like Scott Kazmir is a top rated pitcher anymore , and Al always wore his heart on his sleeve when he was on the mound for the Mets !! You can’t say that about Tom Glavine !
Shortstop/ secondbaseman from ’05-’06, Kaz Matsui is 35 (1975) . At least he was good for his annual first at bat of the season home-run in his two year stint with us.
Mo Vaughn is disappointed that he wasn’t named a finalist for the Mets general manager position !!!

How about Gary Carter?!?!
I seem to remember a single with 2 outs and the bases empty in a certain Game 6 of a certain WS which would have ended had he made an out. Not to mention his homer in Game 3 which gave the team the lead in a game they had to have. Not to mention 105 RBI in 132 games in 1986.
Geez, even Omir Santos had some nice clutch hits.
Name a catcher who could hit in the clutch for a team that’s been around for 49 years…
I still don’t know how you can listen to him, when you could easily simulate the same experience by reading a Yankee blog run by teenagers while jabbing knitting needles in your ears at the same time.
Yeah, if the Yanks can just get their payroll up to $300 mil, maybe the can win it all. They just need Lee, Crawford, Pujols, and the frozen head of Ted Williams.
An aging team with a comically bloated payroll.
And Rusty—Vlad Guerrero and Bob Marley—look closely—they’re twins!

Kingman, you make a point about torturing ourselves with WFAN.
I’m tuning in this morning to hear the mood of the Yankee fans.
Last night on Pinstripe Alley, one poster comments:
“The Yankees need to increase their payroll if they want to win.”
Whoever this is co-anchoring this morning on WFAN, he is saying the same thing. ‘Everyone knows the Yankees will go out and get what they need to, to get back to the WS next year’. He goes on to say something about could be worse, could be a Met fan who doesn’t even have a GM yet.
Evan is agreeing with all. Blah….keep telling yourself that boys. When you’ve got an aging SS you have to resign, an aging closer you will resign, an aging catcher you’ll resign to DH (who doesn’t want to DH), and a 3rd baseman who is moving into the portion of his contract that will probably hinder rather than help, plus only two SP you can count on next year…….well yeah, keep telling yourself you’ll be back in the WS next year. More like we’ll see you on the golf course in early Oct.

I’ve watched all post season games so far and of course, last night’s was by far my favorite yet. That game can only be topped today if the Giants can get it done and eliminate the Phillies.
I don’t care how good your team played in 162 games. I don’t care how good your team looks on paper. In a one or two series play off, anything can happen. And anything usually does. Just ask Met fans who watched in 2006 as the Cards eliminated the Mets and went on to win it all.
Yes, the Yankees won more games than the Rangers did this year. If you were paying attention though, there were chinks in the Yankee armor that made this outcome much less surprising to me. Namely their SP and the age of their core. Baseball, it’s a young man’s game. Something Jorge Posada hasn’t accepted yet.
I believe the Giants have as much of a chance to defeat the Phillies and go on to the WS – even better than an even chance. Their SP hasn’t been stellar either. We shall see.
Go Giants!

For much of yesterday late morning and afternoon, through multiple media outlets, I heard a handful of what I’ll subjectively refer to as “reasonable people” note that Phil Hughes was an iffy proposition at this stage of the season and of his career, and I applauded them for this stance.
Then I heard many, many people respond to that suggestion with “Oh yeah, well who the hell is Colby Lewis and what has he ever done?”
Now they know.

Very pleased to have half of my dream (given the LCS participants) WS and hoping the other improbable team joins the party.
What does it mean that right as last night’s ALCS game concluded the lyrics to the Sesame Street theme came to mind?
“Sunny day, chasing the clouds away…”

At the start of the season with a heavy heart I picked the Yankees to win their 28th WS. Not because I wanted the Yankees to do so but because on paper they seemed to have the best team in the majors. After the Yankees made short order of the Twins and after they came back to beat Texas in the first game of the playoffs I resigned myself to the idea that the Yankees would indeed win their 28th championship. I was surprised when Texas beat Tampa Bay who I thought was the better team. I didn’t fully realize the wave Texas was riding and I tip my hat to Texas for beating the Evil Empire.
Unfortunately, I can’t get teenager giddy over the Yankees demise when my team finished the season in 4th place with a sub-five hundred record. The Yankees made it all the way to the ALCS and I would have been delighted if the Mets had made it to the NLCS, even if they lost.
I find it foolish to blame the Yankees for their huge expenditures when their resources and incoming sources of revenue are huge and they can afford it. The Yankees expenditures keep the team in the playoffs year after year and that keeps their resources at a level that dwarfs other teams.
Right now San Fran reminds me of the 1969 Mets. If they make it to the WS you have two teams on a magic carpet ride. It will be an unstoppable force meeting an immovable object .

the yankee spending is not an indictment on them, rather the nature of MLB. they play by the same rules as everyone else, they just have a fiscal advantage over most teams.
the Mets have had the highest, or close to highest, payroll in the NL for a few years. So why not complain about them having an unfair advantage?

Yes, yesterday’s game was sweet. If the Giants can pull off the upset tonight, I will be a happy camper.
I don’t expect it though. if anything, I would bet the Phils at better than even money to win the series over the giants. And it may not even be close.
Thursday was the Giants chance IMO. they let the phils up, and I fear they will live to regret it.
