This Day In Mets Infamy With Rusty The ” 3 Cheers To The Underdog !!” Edition 10-24-10

" Good Night Cholly !!"

Oh how revenge is sweet ! Last nights game was probably the most bizarre play-offs game I have ever seen to say the least. It had it all, clutch hitting, dominant pitching, a benches clearing brawl that never was – and oh yeah the Phillies season ends not too prematurely but just the way I hoped . All I know is that I was hysterically laughing when the Phillies biggest power threat , buckled at a Brian Wilson breaking pitch for strike three, sending the defending National League champion Phillies to the showers.
So there you have it , the Phucking Phils have just had their own Carlos Beltran moment. So I ask Phillies phans everywhere – ” Are you feeling the sting of denial ?” ” Is Ryan Howard, Roy Oswalt, Ryan Madson and Jimmy Rollins now the poster children for the 2010 National League Championship Series collapse?”
All I can say is Kharma – She’s a bitch !!!

And without further ado … HERE COMES THE INFAMY !!!!!

Happy birthday wishes go out to former Mets utility infielder from the mid ’80′s and current manager of the Minnesota Twins, Ron Gardenhire (1957).

Back up catcher from ’82-’83, Junior Ortiz is 51 (1959) .

Middle reliever for the ’05 Mets, Mike Matthews is 37 (1973).

Sadly on this date in 1973 Willie Mays announced his retirement . Willie had hung on way too long as a ballplayer, but his presence helped propel the Mets to the World Series that year. He would later become a coach for the Mets until commissioner, Bowie Kuhn banned him for working as a greeter at a Atlantic City Casino. The ban has since been rescinded.

Mo Vaughn is rooting for the Texas Rangers ( they have the most ex Mets !!)

I’m not sure that I see a “revenge” angle. Who got revenge from whom?

But karma I can see. Both the Yankees and the Phillies have had well earned great success recently. But both teams may have relied too much (and invested too much in terms of money and years) on older players.

Multiple key Phillies proved mortal this season and the Yankees, for all the money they spent, have a rather inconsistent pitching staff.

They’re both still excellent teams and I won’t be surprised if they’re both considered favorites to meet in the WS next year. But I also won’t be surprised when only one of them makes it (the Yankees after they splurge on Crawford or Werth and Lee).

I meant revenge from a mets fans perspective

Phillies easily could have peaked. If nothing else, they are likely to not be the offensive powerhouse they used to be. So, that means they will be relying on the rotation to carry them again, which right now is 3 deep. And 2 are no spring chickens. And the other is Hamels.

But as always, have to wait and see the games played!

Interesting comment by the fox sportscasters (local philly station, after the game) pretty much called out the team. Said that other than maybe Werth, the rest looked like they did not care that much. One said that they all appeared to just expect that they would win, and did not need to bust their hinnies to make it happen. ANd they looked shocked, not pissed, when it didn’t.

ALmost like the collective team has passed into “I’m Keith Hernandez” land, and now believe their press clippings about being the Jason Voorhees team that is never actually dead.

Gonna be a ton of miles on that team next year. Brown, if he takes over in RF, will be the only starter under 30, and he proved this year he needs some seasoning. And Utley looks to be aging in Met 2B years.

SO, there may be hpoe for the rest of the teams in the division after all!
