I will finally learn if, in addition to looking like Rusty Staub, you sound like him too.

    1. Ceetar

I don’t know what Rusty Staub sounds like.

      1. GravediggerHebner

I’m hoping he speaks in it I haven’t watched the whole thing yet but this is a link to a 15 minute clip from “Rusty Staub Appreciation Day” at Shea Stadium 7/13/86. At just under the 4:00 minute mark the active Mets come out in orange Rusty wigs to give him a plaque.

        Video link: Rusty Appreciation Day

I was there that day !! I believe they played the braves

          1. GravediggerHebner

Yes they did the Braves lineup is visible on the scoreboard in the background. I’m watching it now but it’s loading slowly and is stuck at the 10:00 minute mark. Up to now Rusty hasn’t spoken yet but some great Keith Hernandez, Ralph Kiner, Bob Murphy, Frank Cashen and Arthur Richman stuff so far.

          2. GravediggerHebner

Oh well in the 15 minute video from his day he doesn’t speak. But some great period stuff nonetheless well worth watching for any Mets fan.

Cardinal O’Connor making multiple Pope jokes was an unexpected pleasure.

          3. metsfan4decades

I can’t get that clip to load right now (think I need to reboot, minimum) but now that you mention Cardinal O’Connor making those Pope jokes….I remember that interview now. Not from ’86 but somewhere in the last year, I saw a special that included those jokes. Good stuff.

        2. kistics

Great clip! Keith sounds just as same as SNY broadcasts. I miss GKR already…

  2. metsfan4decades

Nice – I’ll try and remember Rusty and tune in.

On an off note CSNPhilly website/Salisbury is speculating Francoeur is an option in RF next year for the Phillies given how Werth will probably not be back.

hahaha – that would make my day. Nothing against Frenchy but his bat instantly makes that position a down grade.

    1. kistics

Now that would be funny… though Ryan Church wouldn’t be a bad option either…

Didn’t Frenchy say something like ‘I have always hated the Phillies playing for ATL and NY and I’ll never play for the Phillies’?

      1. stickguy

        Tell it to Johnny Damon.

I don’t think there has been a guy since Jackie RObinson that really followed through on that kind of threat, when there was money at stake.

      2. TRS86

Philly moving past where they are now might be difficult if they can’t find a decent RH hitter somewhere. Regular season you can hide an all LH lineup but in the playoffs it gets/got exposed.

        1. Ceetar

Supposedly it’s not a given they won’t resign Werth. We’ll see. They’ve got a fair amount of work cut out for themselves as well.

          1. stickguy

over at MLBTR they had a list of $ commitments. Without taking into account arb eligible guys or potential non-tenders, the phils were 2nd, barely, to the Yankees at ~144mill for 2011. And that was only for 16 guys. And something like 80+ for 2012 already.

If they resign Werth, they have to blow through 160mill easily, since they have little if anything they can or would trade to lower salary.

That at least is the popular perception, but maybe they go nuts and Trade VIcky say. Ibanez they certainly would, but that will require eating a ton of cash.

    2. stickguy

well, at least it would be a logical use for him (assuming he should be playing at all), since the concept is to find a RH platoon partner to go along with Dminick brown.

Also talk that they just use Ben Francisco for that role

Ah hell, I want to see Frenchy replace Werth, just to really pissoff the Philly fans more!

Listening to the Brian Cashman interview right now on WFAN.

Talking about the firing of their pitching coach, Cashman wouldn’t give a reason but said in now way, shape or form are they making him the scape goat.
Later he goes on to say that AJ’s delivery is complicated which, when it’s a bit off, can cause a problem. Said he believes it can be improved and doesn’t believe it has anything to do with pitching in NY.
Hmmm….that’s probably the reason for a new pitching coach. They can’t unload that AJ contract so they’re looking for someone to ‘fix’ him.

Meanwhile I see Dave Ducan will remain in St. Louis.

Cashman goes on to say how much Joba means to the organization and the fans. Really? What am I not seeing with him?

Here’s a question for you guys. What do you suggest we do with the bench? From what I’ve seen, there is good enough talent with the current roster of bench guys that the Mets don’t need to go out and sign a FA bench/role players. Carter, Duda, Hessman, Evans, Blanco, Feliciano, Arias, Tejada/Murphy, etc.

I think Carter, Duda, or Hessman can be the power bat off the bench
I would resign Blanco to be the mentor to Thole
Feliciano/Tejada could be the defensive replacements.
Murphy can be the utility guy.

But obviously we can’t keep all of them on the bench, so who do you guys prefer?

    1. Ceetar

I’d keep both Evans and Murphy as roving subs and LH/RH pinch hitter/power guys.

Maybe Blanco, but he’s getting up there as well. not overly concerned with backup catcher though. they’ll find someone. need to get a backup MI guy, SS..I don’t really like Arias much, and don’t want to put Tejada or someone in that roll as he A. has no power, B. needs to play everyday, and c. isn’t even particularly pinch-run fast. Preferably a solid defensive guy.

I’m done with Carter and Hessman (Duda probably should play every day somewhere). I don’t think Feliciano adds that much, but I wouldn’t be opposed to keeping him as the roving defensive-type outfielder. Part of it depends on what they invision as possible roles for Evans/Murphy if they have them on the team as backups. Do they count as depth in the corner outfield spots?

      1. kistics

I don’t think Murphy/Evans should count as depth in the corner outfield spots, but doesn’t Feliciano play all 3 OF positions? But who does he replace (assuming Beltran doesn’t get traded)? If healthy, the Mets OF is pretty good.

    2. stickguy

figure it out in the spring. I really don’t have a strong desire to see feliciano back. But, much depends on who gets traded. Duda, evans, pagan, Beltran are all potentially in play.

I do like nick the stick on the bench in a swing role. And Duda I would want starting if he isn’t traded. He is going to end up being a really, really good hitter soon. IMHO of course.

    3. TRS86

      Blanco replacement
      Murphy
      Evans
Tejada/veteran if they believe that Tejada will benefit from more time in AAA.
      4th OF guy

  5. stickguy

Howard megdal, new official media sponsor of the “it isn’t really that bad” campaign! Maybe we should have voted for him for GM…

He articulates nicely my recent comments about the Phillies. Not sure when they will fall, but they are primed to go hard and fast when they do.

    1. metsfan4decades

Every single article and post I saw today on the Phils being eliminated feature that Howard pic. LOL.

This is why it’s so hard for me to do predictions, especially this early. Heck, we don’t even know who the GM and manager will be, let alone what the rotation will look like. Neither do we know what the other 4 team”s opening day lineup will look like.

With that said, I just browsed through BL latest post. Conversation on there at one point speculating on next year’s standings already. Of course, most Philly fans have themselves the favorite hands down. All with a variation of of opinions on the Mets from ‘Bah’, ‘Mets are the Mets’, ‘Mets are a second class team’, – basically writing us off before the Hot Stove even starts.

One guy seem to be a bit more realistic though as he said something like ‘who knows? With a new GM, I can see the Mets getting very good, very quick’.

Then I started thinking it probably was a disguised Met fan that threw that comment out there.

      1. stickguy

real dangerous to assume another team will be good or bad on such “soft” stuff as “the mets are the mets” or “we know how to win”.

winning teams can fall apart just as quick as loser teams when the talent slips. And even a team with some baggage can get real good quick when the players are in place and stay healthy.

I also don’t believe that a “team” (meaning the name on the jersey) really has that kind of personality. everything is based on the individual players on the roster.

So maybe a FO can be frugal, or short sighted, leading to a shortage of talent (potentially of course leading to some sort of short fall in the standings).

so I don’t particularly care what the mets did in 2007 at this point (and no, 2008 was not a “collapse”). Especially when a new GM and manager and coaches are going to be running the show!

  6. metsfan4decades

Well, congrats anyway to RA Dickey who was a finalist in the comeback player of the year. Award went to Tim Hudson.

  7. metsfan4decades

wow – those Philly fans sure did take it personally when the Phillies were eliminated.

This: Phillies Had Close Call In The Air

Apparently, the inbound plane bringing the Phillies home almost crashed into another inbound plane coming in on the same runway.
