Seeing the crawl on SNY stating same from Heyman. Welcome aboard Sandy, lets get busy now.

    1. hazmet

kirk jimenez breaking in on SNY to announce it with “It’s not official but its Heyman reporting”.

Pretty funny, the Mets network reporting the rumor on the GM hiring. Classic.

      1. stickguy

so are they kinda sorta giving it credence, or trying to hang Heyman out to dry for going off the reservation?

    2. stickguy

now just hire a good assistant and work him like a dog. Next Towers type.

  2. metro

It’s a done deal. Look for the Mets to deny, deny, deny for now. The league would be VERY VERY unhappy if anything overshadows the WS. Heyman is reporting it with absolute certainty.

    1. Ceetar

Isn’t leaks involving letting reporters break decisions part of the front office mess Alderson’s supposed to fix? get with it already..

      1. kistics

I think leaks are everywhere in the Yankees organization as well. I though Cashman put it pretty well during his interview with MF. He said something like

‘We do not have discussions on organizational decisions until we are ready to make official announcements, just because there are so many leaks through the media outlets’

I thought that was a pretty smart business tactic in minimizing rumors and making quick decisions.

    2. Mr North Jersey

Dude where have you been? It’s been a while welcome back.

      1. kistics

He’s been back since last week. Where have YOU been MrNJ?

        1. Mr North Jersey

Last week? Really? According to my sources the last time I saw Metro in either a comment or a post was Sept 20.

You must be thinking of someone else.

          1. kistics

Oh I thought you were talking about Ceetar. My bad.. ;)

  3. metro

The league will likely allow an announcement on Friday as the next possible day wouldn’t until November 5th. The league also knows that the Mets have a deadline with Takahashi (he must be signed by Sunday night by Mid-night) or he won’t be a Met in 2011 so getting Sandy in here will help (Ricco is likely already handling this however)

    1. GravediggerHebner

I understand the reasons for the moratorium but I agree that allowing them to officially do it on Friday makes sense since it’s an off day and thus the announcement keeps “new” baseball news going.

Personally though I think they should have announced it officially tonight. Unless Alderson left town just have a quick press conference with him, make tonight’s highlight shows and tomorrow’s papers and be done with it. Let him get to work.

    2. stickguy

just because they aren’t supposed to announce it, doesn’t mean that he can’t come in and get to work. Not that it matters, since the news is already out, so if anything, an “official” announcement will actually calm things down news wise!

I predict Eckstein is 2011 Alex Cora

    1. stickguy

yuck. Why not just save money and use a guy like turner?

    2. GravediggerHebner

After that happens I predict Mets fans with small minds and too much time on their hands will lament the white GM bringing in too many white players.

      1. kistics

        +1

    3. TRS86

I predict that I would just as soon have Castillo on the bench as Eckencrappy. They are the same player.

  7. metsfan4decades

    O.K., good job, Wilpons….I hope.

As Haz said, ‘now get busy’.

    1. stickguy

      geez, honeymoon over already?

      1. njstuckintx

no, that’s what you do during the honeymoon.

  8. metsfan4decades

SurfingTheMetsSurfingTheMets: Source confirms Alderson hiring. Source also says Jon Daniels asked Mets to wait until end of World Series, they said no.

    What? Wonder why?
Jeeze, if that rumor is true, and Daniels really wanted to be considered for the GM job, it must be bittersweet getting his team to the WS this year, huh?

    1. stickguy

well, if nothing else, he just lost a ton of leverage (and of course potential $$) not having the Met job to use against the rangers.

    2. GravediggerHebner

On @SurfingtheMets claim that Jon Daniels asked Mets to wait for him, I’m relatively certain he did not, has not and will not pursue job. 3 minutes ago via web Retweeted by you and 2 others

        HAHAHA.

        Called out like a playa.

  9. metro

Bravo to the Mets. Hopefully the next steps include (in any order)

    1) Rudy Terrasas fired, Grady Fuson new scouting director
    2) Decision made on Takahashi
    3) New Manager

    1. metsfan4decades

      Nice job Metro and TRDMB.

I perused around the blogsphere and other than tweets, this blog had the breaking story up first.

    2. GravediggerHebner

I like what I’ve read about Fuson, but just as with Omar being fired Terrasas being let go would be the great news. I’ll likely be happy with whoever replaces him. Just extra happy if it’s Fuson like I’m extra happy with Alderson.

    3. njstuckintx

I want to see # 4 as 4 year extension to Reyes.

We can probably say goodbye to all the excess bunting and strike-outs!

    1. Ceetar

It’s just don’t waste outs. It’s just don’t have the first guy get on base in the ballgame and the second guy in the ballgame bunt him. That’s just wasting.

      1. Prismo

        It’s like they’re describing Jerry to a T.

        1. wannybackstra

I think we can also surmise that Sandy will not be a fan of Wally’s managerial style.

        2. kistics

I really wonder how much of that was Castillo doing rather than Jerry. It was pretty clear that Jerry did not like Castillo and there were several instances where Jerry actually came out and said it was Castillo doing the bunting.

From Castillo’s perspective, sac bunt won’t count against BA and it’s better than GIDP or K or pop-up.

          1. Ceetar

As jerry had Pagan and others do it as well, i’m sure it was both. It was one of the reasons i wasn’t sure Castillo was ever a good fit for the team, though I thought his patient OBP approach did have value on an otherwise pretty aggressive team and felt he’d have been better in front of Reyes where he could work counts and challenge pitchers to throw strikes, setting it up for Reyes to pounce.

Jerry did come out and say that, but on the other hand, but repeatedly allowing him to do it, you’re supporting that decision and merely deflecting blame.

          2. stickguy

well, a real manager would tell the players what to do. Then if they did the opposite, he would pull his sorry ass and park it on the bench.

the sac bunts was the single biggest thing that drove me insane about jerry.

          3. kistics

It wasn’t the fact that Opening day lineup included Jacobs batting cleanup or that Catalanotto was a cleanup hitter at one point?

Or the blabbering mouth that said ‘Beltran COULD be back for the inter-league series’ despite that Beltran is still not healthy.

            Or

    2. GravediggerHebner

Excellent article so far thanks for the link. I haven’t finished reading it yet but I had to stop and say that I really enjoyed this sentence:

“In this day and age, it is easy to forget what a pleasure it is to converse with someone who speaks in whole, grammatical sentences.”

      1. Ceetar

funny though, because i found Eric Walker’s comments in that artical to be very quirky, grammatically.

Isn’t it supposedly taboo to begin a sentance with a preposition, which he does in that sentance?

        1. wannybackstra

It’s also taboo to spell “article” as “artical.”

          1. Ceetar

yes, but I’m not the one talking about conversing grammatically whole. Also, i blame IE and it’s lack of spell-correct, because i’m a horrible speller in general.

          2. metsfan4decades

One of the reasons I use Firefox. It includes spell check for posting responses on blogs, unlike I.E.

        2. Prismo

          That taboo/grammar rule is a myth. ;)

          1. Ceetar

I thought so too, still found his sentences clunky.

      2. kistics

“I regret saying what I said, but don’t regret what I said while I regret but don’t regret I regret what I said but don’t regret”.

“He’s a specialist who specializes in the special procedure”

    3. wannybackstra

This certainly brings cause for optimism, if for no other reason than the fact that we could expect to see changes in the Mets’ philosophy. More importantly, it would appear that there will be an actual philosophy while under Omar we heard talk about building around pitching and defense and young athletic players but then saw Dan Murphy playing LF, Luis Castillo re-signed (no less) to play 2b and experienced no upgrades to a mediocre starting rotation.

    4. wannybackstra

By the way, was this Rubin providing a very interesting and informative piece on the projected new leader of the Mets or was this another axe grinding…..?

      1. Mr North Jersey

Rubin is the devil Wanny, the devil OK?

        Let there be no doubt.

        ;-)

      2. Prismo

Beat writers are sucking up to Sandy right now in order to cozy up with him and get more interview time during his tenure.

        I’m 99% sure of this.

        1. Ceetar

of course, as it goes with new hires.

Rubin kept himself mostly out of that piece, which was nice. just really let Walker paint the picture of how Alderson goes about business normally.

      3. TRS86

Rubin’s axe has already been used and thrown into the fire. No need for it now.

        1. wannybackstra

oh, i see. now that he’s responsible for Omar being fired maybe Sandy will hire him.

          1. TRS86

Never know. Or perhaps he has a feeling of accomplishment. Again, it’s ok for us to disagree on this one Wanny. I am not the only one that believes that he really showed himself to have an axe to grind. If you feel differently it’s not a big deal. Especially now.

      4. metsfan4decades

Even though I thought this Q&A was much cause for optimism going forward, I didn’t see Rubin’s opinion on this one way or another.

Just the fact that he posted this interview though makes one think he’s impressed with Sandy as new GM. Rubin didn’t go out of his way to find a piece on negativity but one that would imply there is much cause for optimism with this hiring.

        1. metsfan4decades

In fact, scanning many articles since last night, I’ve yet to find one that thinks this is a mistake.
I have come across about 20% of Met fans though who don’t like this selection.

Just goes to prove that you can’t please all of the people all of the time.

I’ve yet to figure out though why Sandy even wanted this job. I’d have to assume he’s done the GM thing, he moved on to an MLB exec job and this would almost be like a step backwards.

Maybe he’s tired of waiting for Selig to step down and in the meantime, he’s really looking forward to the challenge of turning this franchise around. Kind of strange though, IMO, that he’d want to even try at this point in his career.

I won’t look a gift horse in the mouth though. The more I read about him, the more I’m thinking he just might be able to do it.

          1. GravediggerHebner

Total guesswork on my part but I think he may just be intrigued by the idea of running a team in a huge eastern market with a really large budget.

So far all he’s done is mostly low budget west coast teams (although I think at first Oakland spent a lot when he was there).

    5. kistics

Harvard grad who’s a Marine Corp vet…. who is this? James Bond?

      1. GravediggerHebner

He’s going to walk into his new office on his first day, call in his employees and say to them “prepare to be shaken, not stirred.”

        1. Ceetar

And then they’ll be all watered down. bleh.

        2. njstuckintx

Given his eloquence, I would figure he would stir, not shake.

          1. Ceetar

I prefer a well crafted margarita myself anyway. Tequila has a much more complex taste.

          2. GravediggerHebner

I want a Jack & Coke cuz I just want to get ‘faced.

          3. Ceetar

Not a big fan of jack.

sticky to 100proof vodka in sugary lemonade. goes down like candy.

          4. Mr North Jersey

            Where’s the Grey Goose?

          5. Ceetar

worthless. Vodka has basically no taste, especially when you mix it. buy the cheap stuff.

          6. Mr North Jersey

GASP!!!! How dare you insult the honor of Grey Goose Vodka!

            :-)

          7. GravediggerHebner

I hear you. In all seriousness I don’t drink much at all anymore, it’s just not in the budget, but if it were I would probably just drink tons of Blue Moon and then if wanting something stiffer I would stick to whiskeys, I prefer them but will drink vodka, won’t really drink anything else (such as rum, gin, can’t stand them) but did have the pleasure of Silver Patron shots this summer on someone else’s dollar and could evolve into putting those away if life allowed.

          8. njstuckintx

Vodka has no taste after you drink tequila. Tequila kills everything.

On a side note, it’s amazing what 1 positive step for the club will do to bring out the traffic on this site.

And if I’m drinking straight poison, it’s a dirty Sapphire martini, Grey goose (or Russian Standard) on the rocks or a little Glenlivit on the rocks. I don’t do these often. My liver appreciates me better that way.

          9. kistics

For some reason that just sounds real dirty to me.
