And Now A Word From The Three Wise Men

Dear Mets Fans:

We are pleased to announce we have hired Sandy Alderson as the new General Manager of the New York Mets.

We realize this is a critical time for the future of this organization and we are confident Sandy is the right person to reinvigorate this franchise and produce a winning and contending team for the long term.

Sandy has led clubs to a World Championship, three American League Pennants and six division titles. He has served as General Manager, President and Chief Executive Officer of teams and also an Executive Vice President at the Commissioner’s Office.

We will introduce Sandy this afternoon during a press conference at Citi Field broadcast live on SNY and Mets.com at 2:00 p.m.

This is the first step of many in our continuing efforts to follow through on our pledge to deliver a team our fans can be proud of for the short and long term.

Thanks again for your support.

Fred Wilpon
Chairman & CEO Saul Katz

And now, this should be the last comment we ever hear from Wilpon, Wilpon & Katz, attorney’s at law. Any and all communication should now come from and through Sandy. If that starts happening, then I’ll feel confident Sandy’s making a difference.

    1. Ceetar

for the most part that’s how it usually is unless the writers specficially hunt down Jeff.

and remember it was a BIG DEAL that Fred blew ‘em off when they ambushed him at uconn.

The Three Wise Men…is that like the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost?

I wonder how long the press conference will be today – if they’ll be taking any questions or not. I’ll be tuning in.

    1. rustyjr

I’ll be listening from the road

    2. njstuckintx

Saul = the Holy Ghost? it’s possible. Other than that picture on the org chart, I’ve never seen nor heard him. Yet, his presence is known…

    3. Ceetar

the Mets asked twitter followers for questions, so I imagine there will be some.

      1. stickguy

are we sure he exists? Or is it like Norma Bates’ mother?

I still say Saul doesn’t actually have a job. They just gave him an office to hang out in to get away from his nagging wife. And maybe a nice Fisher-price telephone to play with (one of the toy ones that isn’t actually plugged in).

        Damn, I want his job!

      2. metsfan4decades

        Interesting…..

    4. stickguy

MF, I would peg it more like Larry, Moe and Curly. Or maybe Shemp, no one knew what he did either.

      1. metsfan4decades

hahahaha – my chuckle for the day.

Oh….to fast forward where this franchise has some credibility and we can all stop taking and reading pot shots about them.

      2. GravediggerHebner

Oops, I see that Stickguy thought of it first. Good, we can blame him.

    5. GravediggerHebner

MF4D, I thought of something different for the Three Wise Men and have added a featured image to the post.

      1. metsfan4decades

        Ha! Always a classic.

        1. rustyjr

Damn I wish I could see lol

    Off the subject:
Ted Berg’s latest post appropriate titled: Ahhhhhhhhhh
He’s commenting about Lupica’s off handed insult towards Beltran.

    http://www.tedquarters.net/2010/10/29/ahhhhhhh/comment-page-1/

    I agree with every word.

i remember that but why is it being republished now? Did I miss something?

        RERUNS

“I’m taking the day off work and heading out of town, and in all the excitement about Sandy Alderson I neglected to line up anyone for guest posts.

So in lieu of that, I’m going to roll out some past posts that I liked or you seemed to like or people told me they liked. Reruns, if you will.

I realize this is a particularly narcissistic thing to do, but hey, the site’s called TedQuarters. Fueled by narcissism.”

        http://www.tedquarters.net/2010/10/29/reruns/

      2. kistics

I really don’t understand why people are killing Beltran. Ok, so he was injured part of ’09 and most of ’10 season. But he was essentially the best CF in all of baseball when he was healthy!! If Beltran was a bad signing, Pedro signing must be the worst signing in the history of mankind! Or how about Carl Pavano? Or Kei Igawa? Or Bonilla? Or Ollie?

I really don’t understand why people love to hate on Beltran. Maybe he’s a jerk off the camera. But from what I’ve seen so far, Beltran has a great work ethic, plays his butt off every day, plays hurt, steps up in big situations, and a good teammate. So can anyone explain why Beltran is the most over-paid player in the history of this ball club?

        1. metsfan4decades

It has to be a personal type thing. Because if you look at the stats, as Berg did, it was a good signing.

Beltran has been one of my favorite players from this era.

          1. stickguy

the curve ball has to be a big part of it.

          2. metsfan4decades

Yeah, I guess the same reason Wright’s detractors keep bringing up striking out with Murph on 3rd with that triple, excusing the two before him who didn’t get it done either.

          3. stickguy

actually wright was the next batter I think. If he had just taken the walk, they would have probably loaded up the bases.

          4. kistics

Same here. It’s one thing to discuss about trading Beltran for the future of the team, but by no means his signing was overpaid.

  5. metsfan4decades

O.K., slow day here and I’ve got plenty of time on my hands waiting for the press conference.

I stumbled on Ozzie Guillen’s twitter account reading a story about that proposed trade of him and Mike Stanton.

Here’s one he tweeted 2 hours ago:

its pretty frio in california cold trying to take picstures for you guy my hair dos not move because i use kielhs gel goos stuff
    **********************************************

Too bad I don’t speak what I’m assuming is Spanish so I can read all of them. Ozzie is just crazy.

    Comment…

    1. TRS86

      Well…. go ahead…..

    2. CaseStreet

Aelig’s comment that this move is “in the best interest of baseball” is telling of how important mets fans and their money is to baseball. Alderson was working on some pretty important stuff w/ Latin American baseball

      1. stickguy

it is kind of like the Yankees. MLB likes them to be dominant. It attracts interest. And merchandise sales.

  7. metsfan4decades

WFAN MF saying he’ll have Alderson on around 3:15.
He also said he was working on having Fred Wilpon on today as well and believes that will happen this afternoon.

    1. Ceetar

Cause obviously all the zillions of people at the press conference aren’t enough, if Francsesa doesn’t ask the questions, they didn’t happen.

      1. Mr North Jersey

        Careful, your fangs are showing.

    1. kistics

Crap… did I mess up that link thing or what?

      1. metsfan4decades

Well, it looks like it but the link works if you click your first paragraph.

I read that yesterday. O’Connor is just trying to spin some story for his own benefit (i.e. his 15 minutes of fame), IMO.

All GMs back in the day knew this was going on. Is he asking for apologies across the board? Heck, I heard Phillips admit earlier this summer he knew what was going on as did everyone else and if they try and tell you otherwise, they’re lying.

      2. Ceetar

        yes.

What did Kay have to say about it? that he agrees and loves O’Connor?

        1. kistics

I forgot what Kay said (his words don’t register in my head all that great), but I think he didn’t agree with O’Connor for the most. But Don basically said that same thing that Alderson should not be the only person held accountable.

O’connor actually came on the show and spoke, but he basically said, given Alderson’s resume and what he will have to accomplish with the Mets, Alderson has to come clean.

    2. njstuckintx

And you can’t tell me Mr. Kay didn’t have an idea of that was going on at that time! I’m sure most knew, but didn’t tell. Not to say it was journalism like it was back in the 50′s & 60′s where journalists would go out drinking with the players afterwards and never write anything that they learned while sharing said drink, but I’m sure they had an idea. Journalism has changed so much in such a little time. Curse you internet, curse you (as i surf the net while i work… hypocrite i am!).

And Kay can’t hold Gary/Keith/Ron jock when it comes to announcing, assuming they are wearing jocks.

      1. kistics

Agreed on Kay and GKR’s jocks….

        1. njstuckintx

that sentence, on it’s own, was almost the cause of my choking to death on a peanut butter cracker sandwich.

          1. kistics

            sorry.. ;)

  8. metsfan4decades

Nolan Ryan was quoted as saying he wants to see uniform rules across the AL and NL and wants the DH eliminated.

    Gets my vote.

    1. njstuckintx

that’ll be a tough elimination for sure. only way would be guaranteeing an addition 2 MLB roster spots in my mind.

but yes, get’s my vote too.

      1. wannybackstra

Even that may not do it because the salary of an established every day DH like a Vlad, or a Matsui or a big Papi exceeds that of a couple of utility players.

Interesting that Nolan would take that position since his cleanup hitter is a DH.

    2. kistics

Agreed. DH just takes away so many aspects of the game IMO.

      1. stickguy

try to tell that to Vlad!

  9. hazmet

I’m hoping this was a transcription and not a copy and paste from an actual e-mail from the Mets. If it was then note to Mets: Presiden”t” has a “t” at the end.

It would be comical to have this transformational day to include a typo in the Presidents title in the organizational announcement.

    1. GravediggerHebner

      Good eye.

I received the same email and it does have the “t” at the end of “President” and then it also lists “Jeff Wilpon COO” after that. So I’m guessing Rusty just cut that last little bit off.

      1. hazmet

Thanks Heb! Good to know, I’m a little obsessed with the little things when they are official / final releases from our organization. Would have been surprising if it was an ommission and would have been alarmingly sloppy.
