The Sunday Question

Congratulations New York Mets for making a move that will ultimately prove to be possibly the best pick up in two years.

Sandy, you’ve just showed up and I’m already a fan.

Today’s question is:  Name 5 “Untouchable” Mets.  These 5 players are not to be traded during the Off-Season.  Everyone else, for that matter, could be either released or dealt.

Wright, Reyes, Ike, Thole & Pelf!
Good Sunday Morn to y’all and have a nice day!

i agree except I would swap Niese for Thole

the only untouchable player in the organization is David Wright. not even b/c his play on the field but b/c of PR/marketing reasons.

that said none of our prospects/young players are going anywhere anytime soon but if you must; Wright, Reyes, Pelf, Niese, Havens

I don’t think there are any untouchables. But, if you want to say which ones are extremely unlikely to be, and I don’t think should be. then Wright, Davis, Neise, Havens. And yes, I know that is only 4. Reyes a tentative I guess.

    Wright, Reyes, Niese, …

      you would trade ike ?

      1. stickguy

in the right deal, Ike needs to be expendable. And if I thought Duda could play 1B anywhere near close to how well Ike can, I would be even less reluctant.

You can always also find a temp guy for 1B for a year, and the Mets do have a few guys that supposedly will need a position change in the minors (and you can’t have 4 guys playing LF!).

as always, it depends on what you get back and how serious a contender you think the team is in the next couple of years. And of course, what you think his ceiling is.

        1. oleosmirf

well i still think Wright will eventually move over to 1B, thats if Davis doesnt entrench himself there in the coming years…

          1. njstuckintx

Why does he move to first? What’s the rationale for that?

          2. oleosmirf

not in the next few years but eventually. he is a below average fielder at 3B and if Flores develops into a 3B as projected then moving Wright over to 1B makes sense.

          3. njstuckintx

I could buy that thinking for a dollar.

I don’t think the question is whether to bring back Reyes next season. But, it is a question as to how long (and how much) you are willing to extend him for after that.

And if the answer is probably a lot less than he will want (or someone else will offer), then trading him makes sense (depending on return).

I am curious to see if they work out a mutually beneficial extension this off season. Might happen, since the Reyes side has to be concerned about the value hit if he loses another big chunk of time to injury in 2011 (I don’t see any reason it will happen though).

maybe 3 years + an option, so that he will have the chance to hit FA again while still relatively young (31 or so)?

      1. oleosmirf

if Reyes has another poor year than i would seriously question bringing him back long-term.

he’s not a kid anymore, if he can’t get over the mental and immaturity issues by now then i dont think he ever will. if he doesn’t return to .280+ BA .350+ OBP .800+ OPS 50+ SB and the GG caliber defense then I would not entertain a long-term contract.

top 5 untouchables, in no particular order:

    1) bobby bonilla

    2) mr met

    3) cowbell man

    4) tim robbins

    5) keith hernandez’ mustache

    1. stickguy

cowbell man and Tim Robbins you can have. Both are annoying!

      1. rustyjr

can we throw Bill O’reilley into that camp also please

  6. njstuckintx

To play the game, Wright, Niese, umm… That’s it. To make it 5 I’d go Wright, Niese, Write, Neese, Right.

  7. Prismo

Untouchable: Wright, Pelf, Ike, Pagan, Gary Cohen in the booth
Touchable: Ollie, Castillo, HoJo, Fred/Jeff Wilpon

  8. Mr North Jersey

Untouchables? As in you do not trade regardless of what’s offered? None.

    1. stickguy

probably easier to make a list of the untradeables!

    2. Prismo

He asked you to name 5, just name the 5 players you would least like to trade.

      1. Mr North Jersey

Only to appease your need for 5 Prismo.

        1. Wright
        2. Davis
        3. Thole
        4. Mejia
        5. Pagan

        1. rustyjr

          pagan ??!!??

          1. Mr North Jersey

Believe me when I tell you I didn’t put much thought into it. :-)

It was just to appease Prismo

          2. rustyjr

oh ok you were scaring me for a sec – btw i asked a question on the message board did you see it?

          3. Mr North Jersey

didn’t I reply to that via email earlier this week?

          4. rustyjr

no this is about uploading video

          5. Mr North Jersey

I sent this in an email I guess you never got it.

“when you are at the dashboard look down on the left column where it says media.

just below media you should see a “add new” if you don’t see it try clicking on the dropdown arrow at the right corner of media to make it visible.

then simply click on “select file” browse to the media and upload it.”

Assuming there are untouchables this off season, I’ll play:

    Wright Reyes Niese Pelf Thole

Reason for Thole is, IMO….unless we’re getting back a first string catcher, one of those is going to be hard to come by this off season. We have no one else ready to go in the minors. Thole has experience now, he’s young, didn’t do a half bad job last year, considering he’s just switched to the catching position in the last 18 months or so.

Niese/Pelf: unless we’re getting back someone’s established ace or solid number 2, trading either of them for anything just creates another hole.

Wright/Reyes: They are still the core and a good one, IMO.

Reserve pick would be Ike, only because trading him for someone other than a first baseman creates yet another hole, unless we’re plugging in Murphy again.
