Happy Birthday to Our Fearless Leader

Today is TRS‘ (aka Eric) birthday, so let’s give him a warm Joyeux Anniversaire on his “special” day. I think he’s turning 29… ;)

May this be the year he sees a Mets World Series victory!

Happy birthday. 29, eh? And El Duque is what, 32?

    1. Prismo

      lol something like that…

    2. rustyjr

      He doesn’t look a day over 12

  4. GravediggerHebner

29′s no big deal. Once you’ve passed the old quarter-century mark they all just kind of blend together in a pot and whiskey haze.

    Oh that’s just me? Nevermind.

    1. rustyjr

Mmmm pot & whiskey ( drools) tell me again why we don’t live in San Francisco ?

    2. metsfan4decades

      Too true, Grave. LOL.

  5. TRS86

Thanks guys, 29 has unfortunately came and gone for me. I am close to half way to 40.

    1. Ceetar

      Close from which side? ;-)

    2. GravediggerHebner

I think I’m gonna need the new saber guy on this one because my math is telling me that “close to half way to 40″ is something like 19.

      1. rustyjr

        He could be 80 :-)

      2. Prismo

Yes, after this comment by TRS is has become quite clear why we needed a sabermetrics writer.

        :p

      3. TRS86

lol, yeah I was thinking by decade. LOL
        Dammit I am 34. LOL.

        1. rustyjr

As a person on the wrong side of 34 I can honestly tell you it just gets worse from here on out

          1. TRS86

            Well damn.

  6. Mr North Jersey

TRS is 29? So what is that in Blog years, 65?

    :-P

    Can we roast him?

Me first. I didn’t realize when TRS was talking about coaching kids in basketball he was including himself.

    Drumroll, ra ta tat tat.

Happy BDay Big Man as my gift to you I will declare this Figgy sucks day. :-D

    1. Prismo

      brutalllll

Back to more important news. Anyone remember me bringing this up a couple of weeks ago?

jcrasnickjcrasnick: “The Washington Nationals are lurking as a potential sleeper team in the Cliff Lee sweepstakes http://es.pn/bdZzaW

    1. metsfan4decades

hahaha – I know you want to see that happen as I know the Nats are your second favorite team in the NL east …… NOT.

      1. TRS86

Actually I would because then Lee would be going to a team that’s no where close to a threat.

        1. njstuckintx

You crack me up. They could sign Lee, resign Dunn and a couple others and they still would be a void in you mind. It’s your b’day, so i’ll cut you some slack.

          figgy sucks.

          1. Mr North Jersey

            “Figgy Sucks”

            well said

          2. TRS86

Until they actually do something with that talent they will still be the doorstep. Also. I don’t see them resigning Dunn if they are getting into the Lee market. Not sure they are as high on Dunn as they would like you to think.

          3. Mr North Jersey

            well said.

          4. njstuckintx

            Figgy Sucks.

    For good order’s sake:

    TRS 86s Story

“I have a very unusual path to becoming Mets fan. As my name suggest, I started as a fan in 1986 at age 10. My parents…”

    1. Prismo

      10+(2010-1986)=10+24=34

      The math works! Math! Woo!

      1. njstuckintx

We had you as our Saber Guy and didn’t even know it. So if MF11 goes on the DL for Carpal Tunnel Vision or something similar, you may get the nod from TRS.

    2. rustyjr

You assume that we know how to read

      1. njstuckintx

Reading is for Mentals. So we’re all covered here.

  9. metsfan4decades

    Happy Birthday, real!

Good day for you Scorpios. You share a birthday with my hubby – although he’s on the other side of 40 (well, other side of 50 too)…..

    1. TRS86

Hey, happy birthday to him as well.

I got home from practice last night at 9:15 and my 4 year old came running down the steps to meet me. My wife stayed upstairs. My loving daughter informed me she had a surprise for me and took me to the bedroom and under a few blankets and comforter was my cake. LOL. I did not tell my wife that this morning when she tried to surprise me with my cake. Gotta love 4 year olds.

      1. metsfan4decades

haha – I hope you got pictures of that.
Little kids are precious. Enjoy it while you can. Teenage girls will age you faster than you can blink.

        1. stickguy

I have one that is a freshman in HS and turning 15 this month. I know what you mean.

And she is actually one of the better ones!

          1. metsfan4decades

Always exceptions to every rule. I keep reminding my mother I was one of them. Not sure that’s the way she remembers it….

          2. stickguy

my mother always said that my neices were payback to my sister.

    2. rustyjr

      Wow ancient lol

  10. Mr North Jersey

Mets suspend “Charlie Samuels “indefinitely” on “personal matter”?

    http://twitter.com/DPLennon/statuses/29682750249

    1. stickguy

what, is he the next Radamsky?

    2. metsfan4decades

      What?
Samuels is someone I’ve actually heard of. GKR mention him from time to time on air.

  11. Mr North Jersey

All this Bday talk has me now wondering when did I stop remembering how old I am?

If I was born in 69 that makes me?

    1. rustyjr

Old enough to see menudo in their prime

      1. GravediggerHebner

        Oh Menudo, wherefore art thou?

      2. Mr North Jersey

        “Figgy Sucks”

Ouch! Bad flashback on the Menudo front. My Mom forced me and my bro to go see the movie with her so we could “see the beauty of Puerto Rico”.

What she failed to understand is that we made up the 1% of males that was in the theater that day making us outcasts amongst the guys and on top of that we were with mom so double whammy.

I took a of of grief over that with my so called friends. lol

    2. GravediggerHebner

born in ’69 makes you awesome, or interpreted another way it makes you immaculate if you catch my drift.

      1. rustyjr

Life would be fine if we’d all 69

  12. rustyjr

Do not wear the black jerseys !! There are some bad black jerseys being passed out !! – sorry Woodstock flashback

    1. stickguy

Did you see the movie that came out last year (I think) called “taking Woodstock”? I found it hysterical. I don’t think my wife appreciated it.

      MF4D was probably there.

      1. metsfan4decades

LOL. No, not really. I was what they now call a ‘tween’ back in ’69 – just a tad too young for that scene
However, my husband attempted to go. He said their jalopy broke down somewhere on the way to upstate NY and they never made it.

      2. GravediggerHebner

I did see that and I enjoyed it despite the fact that it was not the animated story of the brutal kidnapping of a little yellow bird that I expected it to be.

Liev Schreiber in drag was also unexpected but also not unpleasant.

      3. rustyjr

Lol I wasn’t born yet but I quantum leaped into the body of sly stone

        1. GravediggerHebner

I tried that too but I messed up the calculations (help new saber guy) and I wound up in the body of Sly Stallone.

  13. Mr North Jersey

    “Figgy Sucks”

OK so if you r going to comment in honor of TRS’s Bday you must preface it with “Figgy Sucks”

    1. stickguy

Isn’t Figgy what Dylan Gee hopes to grow up to be?

      1. metsfan4decades

Dang, I was hoping Gee’s ceiling was a little higher. I thought he projected to be a very servicable #5 – unlike Figgy who could never seem to stick anywhere on a ML club.

      2. Mr North Jersey

        “Figgy Sucks”

pls remember you must 1st say

“Figgy Sucks” Isn’t Figgy what Dylan Gee hopes to grow up to be?

        lol

        1. kistics

          Figgy sucks

      3. TRS86

I am not sure about that guy Dylan but I hope Dillon is at least able to have an MLB career.

  14. GravediggerHebner

No time given yet but J.P. Ricciardi on with Francesa this afternoon.

    1. Prismo

Whatever time Fatcesa initially says, add 2 hours.

How ironic that two of our normal poster’s bdays are on the same day as mine. Predestination right there.

      1. TRS86

        should have said spouses.

          Figgy sucks.

You’re older than my wife though. so there.

and I’m not making you a lava flow (although if you were magically here, I probably would)

    2. GravediggerHebner

      Mmm, Markie Post.

Isn’t the phrase “Static-X fame” an oxymoron?

Surprised to not see a death date after Puffy, so many of these famous rappers have one.

      1. njstuckintx

He’s an entrepreneur, not a rapper. Similar to Jay-Z.

And yes, I had a thing for Markie as well. Night Court… Great show.

        1. rustyjr

I always loved Markies ummm “posts”

    3. rustyjr

Mmmm markie post – I always loved here

    Happy Birthday TRS!

29 huh? 29, 39 or 34.. age is just a number, right? Don’t we all feel like we’re 25? Well at least I do.. most of the times.. except when it’s raining or morning after late night… ;)

I hope your daughter had the cake in a box when she showed it to you.

Let’s hope that on your next birthday we’ll be celebrating something else besides you turning 35.. errr 30.

    1. TRS86

LOL, yeah still in the box.

  17. kistics

Looking at MLBTR article titiled “The Mets’ Decision To Hire J.P. Ricciardi”

    The first sentence

“The Mets know J.P. Ricciardi signed Vernon Wells, B.J. Ryan and Frank Thomas to questionable deals, but they still wanted to hire him.”

    ouch!!

    1. TRS86

Cheap shot there for sure. JP is much more than just that guy who made some questionable decisions. His talent in scouting and drafting is a far cry from what we have had over the years.

      1. Mr North Jersey

        well said

        1. rustyjr

          Figgy sucks !

          1. Mr North Jersey

            Figgy sucks

            LoL

      2. kistics

Yeah that’s basically what the article is all about too. That the BoSox wanted/ the Mets hired him because of his talent in scouting and drafting.

If it makes you feel any better the second sentence said “So did the Red Sox for that matter.”

        1. TRS86

Yeah, I read it. I also saw the part about how the Mets already have bad contracts in CF and closer so they are safe. Yet another cheap shot.

          1. Prismo

            More BS!!!

          2. stickguy

            More cowbell!

      3. Prismo

And honestly, how bad was the BJ Ryan deal? Deals can’t be bad only in hindsight/retrospect, that’s just absurd and not fair. He signed a 5-year, $47MM contract (KRod got 3yr/$37MM). Yes, it was long, but he had a GREAT first year, and the contract only ended up stinking because of injuries.

And Ricciardi won’t be signing free agents for the Mets, he’s only a special assistant. So what’s the difference if he had a couple bad contracts? I mean, sure, it counts, but it’s not a dealbreaker.

Any reason to hate on the Mets…I swear…

If the Red Sox got him they would be universally praised.

    2. GravediggerHebner

The key is the contracts were bad, the players were not.

      1. stickguy

that’s why you need a balance in the FO. Someone has to be the voice of reason, and/or fiscal prudency.

although the Wells deal was bad player wise too, in that he was not that good anymore, and certainly could not project to being a star for the length of that contract. But, reports are that it was ownership that did that deal?

who knows. some people have great taste, but no common sense when it comes to money. Just hope you don’t marry one or make one the GM of your team.

        1. kistics

I agree. And I also think when you evaluate whether the contract is a bad contract or not, you have to look at who was available at the time a player was acquired.

For example, looking back Ollie’s contract, it is a terrible contract. But at the time it was signed I thought his contract was relatively fair given who was available and where the market was. I mean Lowe just signed $15M per year contract and there was no one else available in the market. Given Ollie’s record in ’07 & ’08, I seriously thought that he could be the middle of the rotation type guy (I will not use #s since it’s TRS’ b-day). And this was pre-recession days which meant that $12M for mid rotation guy was not that bad.

          1. TRS86

I did not mind Ollie but hated the deal. That was the off-season you could have had Wolf and Garland on one year deals for about the same price as Ollie and to me we needed 2 pitchers anyway and Ollie was not significantly better.

          2. kistics

There were some disgruntled people when Ollie was signed. But correct me if I’m wrong, but I do not remember one media member killing Omar for the deal.

          3. TRS86

There were a few but most thought Omar had to do it because Ollie was young LH in house been successful in NY and was the next best pitcher on the market.

          4. oleosmirf

i dont think you can find another Met fan who was more against bringing Ollie back than I was.

  18. TRS86

Don’t take this the wrong way because I love the Mets decision to bring in Sandy. However, reading some of the tweets on the Charlie Samuels issue it occurred to me that the change in media perception is already working.

Under Omar this incident would be seen as another in the long line of embarrassing issues and a sign of someone who has clearly lost control of their organization.

Under Sandy the headlines are reading that “Sandy Alderson is serious about making significant, deep-rooted changes in this organization.” or an example of Sandy cracking the whip early.

So if it was a change in how the organization is viewed the Mets wanted, it appears they have gotten it… for now.

    1. rustyjr

      Amen !

    2. Prismo

Call my a cynic, but they’re just building him up so they can tear him down.

      1. rustyjr

I personally think that Alderson is too savvy to fall into that teap

  19. kistics

What are your opinions on Reyes and his contract situation? As you all know his option was picked up as expected. But do the Mets give him an extension now or after the season? Or do the Mets let him go after 2011 season?

I guess it’s hard to tell now given his struggles with injuries past couple seasons. But I also view that as an opportunity. Why not lock him up little bit cheaper and more incentive driven contract now than waiting till end of 2011 season. IMO if he can stay healthy he’ll be very good. And given that 2011 is his contract season, he’ll try like crazy to stay on the field and produce. So if I were a betting man, I’d bet that his value will go up at the end of 2011 season.

So why not lock him up when his value is little less?

    1. Prismo

Totally depends on what he’s asking for.

      1. kistics

I guess that’s another side of the story because Reyes might not want to sign an extension now.

    2. TRS86

Honestly I get the idea that Sandy does not want to lock in any more players for 2012 right now than he has to.

      1. kistics

I got the same impression too when he said that he’s hoping for more flexibility after 2011 season. But he also said that he would like the team to be built with the home grown guys. And Wright and Reyes are two corner stones of this franchise.

    3. GravediggerHebner

I’m in favor of a 3 year deal that would include 2011. That way he’s under contract for the seasons in which he turns 28, 29 & 30.

If he’s healthy and productive then the team has lots of options. He can remain a key cog for the team or he can be traded with roughly 2 years remaining on that contract thus getting the Mets a greater return.

If he’s not healthy and productive, at least it’s not a 5 or 6 year contract.

      1. TRS86

Even that to me depends on the price. I think they have to either re-sign him or getting something of value back for him but I can understand Sandy wanting to wait and see before offering it.

        1. kistics

How about something similar to what Ryan Howard is getting? :p

I could see something like 3/35 (11/12/12) with incentive to go up to 11/15/15 if he plays more than 145 games in 2011 and 2012.

          1. kistics

and perhaps 4th year vesting option that becomes player’s option once he plays 145 games in 2013.

  20. GravediggerHebner

    R.I.P. Sparky Anderson

    1. TRS86

Oh wow. Grave can you get a post up on that with the source?

    2. kistics

      RIP Sparky Anderson…

      Only 76.. so young..

  21. hazmet

OMG! Belated Happy Birthday TRS or “RDM One”.

I was out with customers yesterday and just am catching up on the site.
