To Taka Or Not To Taka, That Is The Question

Taka me to the bank

Multiple media outlets, including ESPNNY, report that with the midnight deadline for exclusive negotiations with pitcher Hisanori Takahashi approaching the pitcher is seeking a 3 year contract with a $4-5 million annual value.

Mets fans I ask you:  if you were the Mets GM would you offer Takahashi a 3 year, $12-15 million contract?

(editor’s note):  please do not allow the fact that this blog sponsors Takahashi’s baseball-reference page to influence your thought process)

    I don’t sign him

Related, Eddie C. on the FAN just said Mets preference is a 1 year, $3 million deal with an option for a 2nd year, and in his opinion “Takahashi’s side is gonna have to come down if a deal is to get done.”

He added that with Alderson on the West Coast involved in manager interviews he’s not sure how much time Alderson actually has invested in making this happen.

I left with the impression that if Taka really wants more than what the Mets have on the table he’s gone and I happen to agree despite our page sponsorship.

The guy has no clear role. He would seem to me to be unlikely to be a starter. Given the presence of KRod he seems unlikely to be a closer. I don’t think it wise for the Mets to invest 3 years and $12-15 million in a middle reliever/set-up man/spot starter especially one with 1 year of MLB experience who would be 36, 37 & 38 during that contract.

Aww man. Who messed up and posted a new story. We had 300+ comments going over there. LOL>

As for Taka, if we were really thinking playoffs or bust next year then sure you need Taka because of his versatility. Considering that is not the case, 9-12M for a reliever spot starter that is 36 and would be forced to be either on the roster or released over the next 3 years? Nah.

3/$12-15M is probably a starting point from Taka’s side for negotiation. And the Mets are offering 1/$3M.

So how about 2/$4.5 with incentive to go to $6.5M

My guess is they’ll agree to a 2 million 1 year deal with an option for a second.

How many teams would offer considerably more than that offer?

Probably every team in the game.

      1 yr, 2 mil?

      Right.

      1. stickguy

all rumors at this point. I don’t actually believe any of the reported stuff is factual

Plus, that is how negotiations work. Team trolls out a low ball, player asks for silly money to start, and they go from there.

        1. kingman 26

Why in the world would Taka accept 1/2?

Do YOU think he would not receive many better offers?

To answer that last question: No.

3 years….I would only give him 3 years right now if he’d take about 1 million for each year. That way, when he ages, if he falls off a cliff the invested money that might be lost won’t be that great.

Of course he’ll never do that though.

Does he or his agent think he can really get 3 years for 12MIL?

  7. oleosmirf

anything more than 2 years and around 6 mil is too much…

  8. stickguy

3/15? Say goodbye. 3 years at all say goodbye.

2/$4mill guaranteed, yeah I do that.

1/$3mill + option is OK too.

Heck, they only gave Schoe 3/9, and look how well that worked out!

I would be amazed if he walked and some other team went 3/12 on him.

    1. metsfan4decades

I wouldn’t put it past the Yankees to spend that on him.

    2. GravediggerHebner

Perhaps this is not an appropriate way to look at it but I would also consider Nintendo-owned SEA as a possibility.

          I know that code!!!

The real question is should Alderson be let go. 2 weeks in and the Mets circus continues with Samuels. Embezzlement gambling on basball stealing equipment. Now he’s too busy looking for a manager to sign the teams second best pitcher. The more things change the more they stay the same.

    1. njstuckintx

Is this typed with sarcasm font?

    2. GravediggerHebner

When I watch the 1st episode of Mets Hot Stove on SNY now I’ll know who the guy standing outside the window with the “Fire Sandy!” sign is.

    3. saltygary

6 years from now if things are in the crapper I can refer to this post and say told ya so. :p

      1. Mr North Jersey

        LoL Way to plan ahead.

You know it goes both ways though right?

6 years from now if the Mets are defending their 2nd W.S. Title When Alderson gives us free tickets to give away to who we think are our best R.D.M. Blog Mets fans we will refer to this post as reason why You should not be considered.

        :-P

        1. saltygary

          Doh!

Love taka but pass on anything more than $3m for one year. I could be convinced to include incentives up to 5 or 6 m based on innings if he ultimately winds up in the starting rotation. that would only be fair considering his undefined role. it would suck for him to sign a middle relievers deal and wind up a starter.

  11. kingman 26

    WAY too much.

    2/6 is fair.

Let him negotiate around and if he gets 3/12-15, more power to him.

He is kind of a jack-of-all-trades, master of none type.

Definitely valuable, but not at that ridiculous price.

    1. stickguy

this is just such an odd situation, since the Mets will never actually be competing with other teams. So no shot at telling him “bring us your best offer so we can see about beating it”.

      1. kingman 26

It is odd….I do like Taka, but he is just not good enough to be worth anything near 3/15.
