This Day In Mets Infamy With Rusty : The ” Run Sharon Run !!!” Edition 11-06-10

" Ya Gotta Believe !!!"

Tomorrow marks a yearly ritual for fanatics of the sport of marathon running. Yes that’s right starting at 7 a.m the Verrazano Bridge will be off limits to all automobiles because the motor of choice will not be fueled by gasoline or diesel but blood sweat and determination. Yes it is almost time for the fortieth running of the New York City Marathon ( or as I like to call it 29 miles of pure torture !!).

Last February I profiled avid Mets fan and runner, Sharon Chapman – a avid runner who is raising money for the Tug Mcgraw race for the cure foundation. The following is the republished article from that time. Enjoy !!!

But our friend Greg Prince asked us to link to his amazing blog Faith and Fear In Flushing, where he has a interview with Sharon Chapman – A long time Mets fan who is in training for the New York City Marathon. She is using the marathon to raise money for the Tug McGraw Foundation, which is a charity that has devoted its resources to making the lives of people coping with brain cancer, post- traumatic stress disorder and trauma brain injuries better. To read Greg’s interview click here. http://wp.me/pKvXu-1aY

If you are within the five boroughs and intend on watching the marathon in person please give Sharon all your support. She is one hell of a role model, selflessly raising money and awareness to this worthwhile charity. If you can spare a few bucks please go to the Tug McGraw Foundation at www.tugmcgraw.com
Thank you

And with that said…. HERE COMES THE INFAMY !!!!

Former reserve outfielder from ’69-’74, Jim Gosger is 68 (1942) .

One time dominant reliever ( except when he became a Met) ,John ” The Candyman” Candelaria is 57 (1953) .

The Cincinnati Reds signed reserve catcher, Dave Liddell of the New York Mets as a free agent on November 6, 1990.

The folk hero that wasn’t during the ’00 World Series, Bubba Trammell is 39 (1971) After he lift the Mets in ’01 he became a everyday player for the San Diego Padres and went on to have some pretty decent power numbers.

Mo Vaughn has been inspired that he has decided to take up running – World watch out !!!

Thank you Rusty. I appreciate all of the support you have given me during this project.

      Good luck here too!

      Never a problem

Best of luck with your run. Remember, Left, right, repeat.

Mr. NJ was debating on the merits of not bringing back the X Man over the offseason over at MMO. What the TRDMB peeps think?

Some poster over there mentioned Evans as a young X Man type to be the right hand bat for RF and 1B (AKA cheap, young and not coming off surgey). Again, thoughts?

    1. Ceetar

I like Evans. Someone told me last night that he was out of options, and will get a shot. (he may be biased, he owns an Evans jersey)

Whatever the team does in the context of backups my only specific wish is that they don’t rush into anything.

Last season’s early signing of Alex Cora boggled my mind. I feel pretty good that there will be plenty of options available for RH corner OF/corner IF back ups and that the team should not trip over itself to bring one on board by establishing the high end of the market at 12:01am tomorrow morning.

I put on a comment about him too (the other dude beat me to it, but I swear I was going to already!). I think it makes sense. Profile as very similar players. Basically, Evans now is what Nady was when they got him. But Evans is cheaper.

ALso a ton of concern about Nady not being able to play the OF anywmore (with his arm). So, go with the cheaper option.

ANd in that piece, a fine case was made to platoon Pagan, since he does not hit much at all vs. lefties.

And now for something completely different.

From the FWICG.com… concerning Terry Collins.

“Collins also managed the Anaheim Angels from 1997-1999 and was relieved of his duties in Anaheim with a 51-82 record in 1999 after his players petitioned the front office to fire him.”

Yeah, that worries me a little.

    1. rustyjr

well I guess he falls into the dallas green section

    2. stickguy

and yet there is a post showing in the spyder crawl about Collins now being th efront runner for the job.

Of course, he is about the 5th front runner so far.

    3. GravediggerHebner

These links might shed some light on the “players petitioned to have him fired” stuff.

Check out this link, especially “The Angels Years” section.

      Also this was quite interesting:

good stuff. after reading stuff, I would vote for him remaining as the minor league ugy. Seems to have done a good job at that, and going back to managing at this point (and he is no spring chicken, being only 1 year younger than Old man Alderson) might be a stretch.

Nice they are talking to him, but I don’t see the fit.

also, I loved that Times article, In Rusty’s honor considering it featured Mo Vaughn as the team lightning rod.

    Good luck, Sharon.
I have to give you credit. I’d be sucking wind at the end of the first mile.

  5. Mr North Jersey

    GO SHARON!!!

  6. GravediggerHebner

Sharon may you have a healthy and successful run.

  7. stickguy

I have a Tug BB card that sits on my desk (from the 1972 card set).

good luck with the run. I think my neighbor is running too. Say Hi! if you see him!

  8. njstuckintx

How come I see TRDMB people posting all over the blog-o-sphere but here? Hmmmmm????

    1. stickguy

Hey, I’m trying. You want me to talk to myself?

      1. njstuckintx

i feel like that sometimes myself. so sure, lets hear a stick-monologue.

        1. stickguy

wouldn’t be the first time I did one of those late in the evening, and had about 8 posts in a row (on the latest posts list).

not that anyone ends up reading them i don’t think. So I guess it is like talking to my wife?

          1. metsfan4decades

Hey, I read just about every comment on every post that goes up here – even if I don’t always add a comment.

I’m B-O-R-E-D. I hate when there’s no baseball games to look forward to.
Looking at the Twitter feed to the left and it looks like Grave is giving play by play for some winter league games. I’m jealous. Wonder where those games are being broadcast?

          2. metsfan4decades

Dang, I see it now. It’s on MLB. Guess I’ll have to pay more attention to their broadcast lineup. Didn’t know they were showing some of these games.

          3. stickguy

            now that is desperate.

          4. GravediggerHebner

If I read the graphic at the end of this game correctly MLB Network will be broadcasting the AFL championship game live at 3:00pm 11/20 so we get one more live baseball game this year.

          5. stickguy

hell, with the internet and all the modern electronic gizmos, you should be able to watch live cell phone streaming video of DWL games too!
