Sandy Alderson on tonight’s Mets Hot Stove Report with Kevin Burkhardt said,
“I think in recent years it’s become clear that some clubs are gonna go over slot and what that allows you to do occasionally is to take a player who is otherwise “unsignable” and take that player in a later round and it can give you a competitive advantage.
So I’m not saying that we intend to go over-slot in every case but I think we have gotten to the point where not only big market clubs are going over slot but small market clubs are going over-slot. They see it as a competitive advantage. I don’t think we (Mets) can be left behind in that regard. I think we’ve got to be open minded about it and a we intend to be.”
You hear that? He said he is not Selig’s “B%#$h”!

so first all the big market teams (except the Mets maybe) stopped paying attention to a voluntary program, then the small market teams did.
so basically, the slotting system was a dismal failure, and is universally ignored. So maybe it should just go away.
Consider it the 55 MPH speed limit of sports.

Can’t Drive 55? Wasn’t someone kicking out the VH references before. Then again, VH was never truly VH without Diamond Dave.

And I know, Sammy sang Can’t Drive 55, but whatever. Doing my best to un-segregate posts!

So… Is Beltran saying all the right things or is he sincere about being open to switch positions if necessary or finish his career as a met. Would a 3 year extension (without one of those “can’t offer arb”) be absolutely crazy? Prob. at this point it would, but if he’s playing at 85% of his old form and is healthy, would you extend him? Not to be confused with Extenze.

For me 2 year extension could work. Obviously you have to see how his knee holds up during the middle of the season, but if he’s 85-90% of what he was, I would think about 2/$20m with an option for 3rd year.
Having said that it would also depend on who else would be available for the corner OF spot.

Beltran will be 34 in the spring, and there is precisely zero chance that the Mets will–or should even consider–another contract.
An aging, injury-prone player whose agent is pathologically devoted to his clients’ being overpaid?
Pedro; Alou; Johan; Bay; Delgado; Wagner; KRod; — this team is hopefully all done with overpaying players for their past glories.
I am not at all anti-Beltran; he is a great player who is unfairly criticized by the unreasonable segment of the fan base.
No way, shape, fashion, or form should the Mets even remotely consider another contract for Beltran, even if he plays 150 games and has 2008 numbers.

I agree with you. I just thought it was kind of PC-ish by saying he’d like to finish his career a Met.

I have very mixed feelings about him–he clearly does hustle most of the time, and he clearly is a generous man and a good teammate.
However, I think this new attitude is also clearly due to he and Boras’ realizing how much more he received from the Mets than he would have from any other team in 2005, and that now that he will be a free agent in a year, he is going to say all the right things at every opportunity, hoping that if the Mets do not choose to overpay him again, maybe someone else will.
But regardless, while I very sincerely hope he is either gone for prospects during the year or as a free agent after 2011, I still will have good memories of how excellent he was from 2006-2008.

This isn’t even something that be considered until after the season.
