1st off I want to thank GraveDiggerHebner for being cool with me piggybacking on his earlier post. Now after a painstakingly long 1st round of managerial interviews Alderson and the Mets have finally announced that they are ready for the 2nd round. 10 men threw their caps in the ring 4 remain.
Round 2 will be an all out brawl that will involve Wally Backman, Terry Collins, Chip Hale and Bob Melvin.
Here is a short “Tale Of The Tape”.
Wally Backman:
Age: 51
Managerial exp: None
Terry Collins:
Age: 61
Managerial exp: Yes
Chip Hale:
Age: 46
Managerial exp: None
Bob Melvin:
Age: 49
Managerial exp: Yes

Right now, I’m just going to trust Sandy to know what he’s doing with this decision.
I don’t know enough about any of these 4 candidate’s and what their managerial style is/would be to really form an opinion. All I know is what I’ve been reading. Collins initially would not have been my first choice but if he gets the nod, so be it. I’ll just have to assume that whoever Sandy picks, it’s the person that best represents whatever it is he has in mind for this organization going forward.

I agree – at this point the list of names aren’t sexy but if they help us win – Ill be happy

Um…..the following by AA’s Eric Simon on the managerial finalists points to one of the reasons sabermetric geeks always seem to be on the defensive and have little success convincing ‘purists’ to come over to their way of thinking:
‘Whom do I want to win? I really couldn’t care much less about anything than I do about the Mets managerial search. If it were truly up to me, and I could change MLB’s rules to suit my needs, the Mets would be managed on the field by a sophisticated win probability computer, which would take into account standard win expectancy matrices plus more complicated pitcher- and batter-specific algorithms to refine the basic probabilities according to strengths and weaknesses of individual players. Yes, all in-game strategy would be determined probabilistically, not intestinally.’

He can’t really be serious. This has to be a joke – one that went right over my head.

What’s the probability that he has a girlfriend?
“here you go miss, I’m giving you this flower. I calculated that you would reciprocate good feelings to me based on your height, weight, hair color, friend ratio, nationality, dress type and type of drink you are consuming on a Tuesday evening in November. I look forward to our 59.37% chance of success.”

I’m trying to remember if I met Eric. I know I met some of the AA folk. James particularly, (won’t spell his last name, too much work) but I don’t remember all of them.

Yeah, that’s the extreme sabermetric point of view that forgets about all the non stat factors. It’s probably just as wrong as ignoring stats altogether.

while you theoretically could use this computer for making decisions, it does kind of ignore the vast majority of th ejob that requires actual human skills. Like everything that happens before and after the game.
However, it would not be a bad thing for the manager to pay attention to those types of probabilities. Maybe a nice ipad on the bench with him, with a program to quickly call up splits, history vs. a particular pitcher, etc. Strategy in a box!
I know that coaches and managers do look at #s though, so it is probably just in their heads knowing which batter is successful vs. which pitcher. Unless you are Jerry, in which case the only stat thatmatters is which side you throw or bat from!
