Mets Add To The 40 Man

As you probably know by now the New York Mets have added 4 players to their 40 man roster in anticipation of the deadline for protection from the rule-5 draft.

Anthony DiComo of MLB.com, among others, reports that 3B Zach Lutz, 2B Jordany Valdespin, and pitchers Josh Stinson and Armando Rodriguez have been placed on the Mets 40 man roster.

Pitcher Manny Alvarez was added earlier this month and DiComo notes that the number of players on the Mets 40 man roster currently stands at 37 plus pugilist reliever Francisco Rodriguez who is currently on the disqualified list, or in other words 38.

You sir, must have read my mind. I was just going to start searching how many openings in the 40 man there were left. Ask and you shall Hebceive.

where, pray tell, may we see a current 40 man list? Yes, I know. I’m lazy.

      Right now this one

      http://newyork.mets.mlb.com/team/roster_40man.jsp?c_id=nym

shows 34 players including KRod but does not include the 4 players added today (it does include Manny Alvarez).

So if you just look at this linked one and use your imagination to add the 4 new players you can see it that way.

Could this fall under “Wagging the dog” maybe?

“The hard cold reality is players always look out for themselves first. They always look for the excuse, and Wally being on probation so to speak gives these over privileged athletes just the crack they need to deflect the blame onto the new guy.”

like I said at MMO, if the FO is going to take a risk with a manager (hell, any manager is a risk), they need to be clear that they fully support him and have his back, and enforce it. Should keep the messing around by the players in check.

Dude I already got your angle on it I didnt really expect you to repeat your thoughts again here for me. :-)

wasn’t for you. It was for the audience here (not that there actually is one…) that did not see it over there.

Hell, you are the guy that posted the same post in 2 places, why should I post the same response?

now what we need is one of those crack new MiL authors to let us know if there were any surprises (risky omissions) that might actually get taken an held?

seems that the biggest risk is with pitching, especially a young power arm that can get hidden for a year in the BP.

I can’t think of anyone off the top of my head, but I also can’t remember where to find a list of everyone that was eligible this year.

    1. GravediggerHebner

Ed Ryan of Mets Fever compiled the list of eligible players. You can decide who you would have protected.

not seeing a whole lot on that list that is likely to go (maybe Owen), or at least no one that will upset me.

unless Pena becomes the next Flores, but that would be one hell of a stretch.

    From Adam Rubin:

Oliver Perez, overall, has a 9.00 ERA and .350 opponent batting average in the Mexican Winter League.

    1. stickguy

at least he is getting better since the season ended!

    2. metsfan4decades

Sad, but I’m beginning to suspect Ollie’s career may very well be over.

With 36MIL dollars though, not like he and his family will be standing in the bread line.

      1. stickguy

I am guessing that you can retire on that in Mexico and live just fine, even if you start at 30.

That also doesn’t include the many millions he made before his gift from Omar.

and yeah, at this point, if he bounces back and has a good year anywhere in 2011 I would be surprised. And after that, 1 step to a MiL invite.

Oillie’s done; at least for the forseeable future. Ceetar and others can be as optimistic as they like, but a guy like Ollie not topping 89 mph is not a major league pitcher.

He was always scatter-armed, lacked control, and had mediocre secondary pitches; throwing hard was the only way he was able to strike guys out and succeed.

Maybe he will stay in the game, and spend a year or two in independent leagues/Mexico/Japan and learn secondary pitches and better control, but as he is, he’s not an MLB pitcher.

My prediction has been that he will come to camp, and if he cannot consistently hit 93–94, he will be asked to take a minor league assignment and be released if he doesn’t.

      1. njstuckintx

        agreed.

      2. Ceetar

Woah now, I was never projecting Ollie on the team, merely suggested it’s vaguely possible that he could build up that arm strength and get a couple mph back and possibly ‘show something’ in the Spring and that it wouldn’t serve any purpose to release him before April.

          Ok, Ok….I apologize….

If you had to choose between Steel Reserve and Hurricane, which would you choose?

    1. stickguy

have never had either, so I will go with “whichever one you are buying for me”

      1. njstuckintx

Next time I’m near to where you are at, the 1st Steel Reserve is on me. Granted, you only need one to ruin your day, so that works out in your favor.

You guys need to broaden your horizons.

I promise, the right bourbon (or tequila, vodka or gin) is your friend!!

      :-)
