The Sunday Question

The Mets have scheduled a press conference for Tuesday to announce theirnext choice of Manager.  Hopefully after this, Alderson could start working on the team itself.  So today’s question is pretty obvious.

Who do you think will be the next the manager of the New York Mets?  And will he be the right man for the job?

you know what i find kinda funny is the #1 reason most of you didnt want to fire Manuel midseason was the fear that Melvin would take over as the interim and be handed the job at the end of the season.

    Mets choice = Melvin.

Right man for the job: No, somehow in the future when I think of the Iconic Mets the franchise will become under Sandy’s mission statement, I don’t think of Bob Melvin being the Iconic Manager of an Iconic team.

    Who will: Melvin

    Who should: Backman

As for Collins, I read somewhere that he’d be tough to replace in his current role with the Mets as he’s doing such a good job. That leads me to think he’ll not be chosen.

For Hale… While he may be qualified, but I don’t think he gets picked.

My order of choices would be Collins , Wally, Melvin and Hale but I think Melvin will get the nod – like I’ve said guys we have to give whoever is Sandy’s choice whether we like him or not a chance and support him

my pick is Backman, but I don’t really care much. Whoever makes Francessa look stupidest in weekly interviews.

although Backman does have a little Rex Ryan in him and the Jets seem to be working out ok.

I think Melvin will get the job. Collins with his long minor league background could be named scouting director. Wally likely moves
up a couple notches to AA. Teufel takes over AAA. Oberkfell will
be part of Melvins staff. Not my first choice BUT I’m fully on board with
Mr.Alderson. Plus, I think having Wally move up in the systems allows
options for a couple yrs down the road. Couldn’t you see him coming
in to light a fire in a yr and a half if after some rebuilding the players
    still aren’t getting it done?….I don’t know….All just speculation.

Honestly, I don’t care all that much. I see this as a transition year for the team: see what we really have with each player, let tons of money come off the books at the end of the season, and build for the future. So whoever gets hired for manager is, in my opinion, simply trying out for the 2012 run at the playoffs. If he doesn’t look like he really knows what he’s doing, he gets replaced next year.

The thing I really do care about in all of this is the intelligent and methodical way Sandy is going about the search. Rather than go the easy route and just promote someone internally without thinking about it, he’s looking at all options and not just jumping into a decision blindly.

    We’ll see.

Agreed!… This is a “sort things out after the tornado hits” type
season. Alderson is getting rid of the Omar lackies and all their mess. Has to see what he has here on every level and whats needed to move foward. Mes think this is why he has kept Hale,Jauss,Wally,Teuf,Obie,Collins and Melvin around so far.
THEY know whats in the system better than him and his staff as
      of right now.

I really don’t know. I would say that Hale is out, and the other 3 are a toss up?

as to who, Tim Bogar. Oh wiat, he wasn’t one of the choices.

I am fine with Melvin or Wally. Wally might be fun, and Melvin actually seems to know how to manage (minor details of the job like utilizing players correctly, and managing a bull pen).

I think the Fiery vs. laid back (art Howe, be real, was was clueless coming to the NL) is a bunch of nonsense. If Melvin coes in, shows he has the teams back and isn’t a panicker, establishes clear roles and sticks with them, then I expect the team will play plenty hard for him.

ANd if he doesn’t keep that media wildly entertained, too F’ing bad for them!

    1. fongy2

I don’t have a problem with that. Is there any seperation b/t Bogar
and any of these other guys?….Except negatively? In that Bogar knows little to nothing about what we have anywhere in our system
from Rookie ball on up to the big team.

      1. stickguy

I don’t think it is that big of a deal about him knowing the system. That is a job for the FO. He only needs to worry about the guys on the big club, and many of those are a known quantity, and pretty much he should be able to get up to speed quickly on it.

He gets bonus points for a stellar MiL record, and having spend a couple of years working in the majors with wining teams and good managers.

        He even played in NY.

SO, if there was ever a guy that should have earned a big league gig, it is him.

and, he is comep0letely untainted by the last few Met years. A truely unbiased outsider.

        1. fongy2

I think you missed my point. Alderson comes in and brings a
couple of top, trusted guys with him. They know we aren’t a player or two away fromserious contention. They also know
we’re not that bad. So, as the new guy running things how could it hurt to consult with and maybe keep a few of the guys
who we here at the end of the last regime? Especially when
all those interviewed were guys who were brought in during the
past year, likely by the insistance of ownership and had very
few if any ties to Omar and his D.R mafia?
I wouldn’t have had a problem with Bogar BUT again given the
similar type guys interview, whats the point?

          1. stickguy

well, depending on who the “couple of guys are” they will be in serious contention!

ANd it is fine that many people are writing off 2011 as a waste, transition year, colon cleansing, whatever. So a good time to get a newbies feet wet. But beyond that, I want the best damned manager for when the new, imporved team is in place.

Having a year in the Mets organization at this point will be irrelevant by 2012.

And I don’t know as if any of the guys have the resume Bogar does. Wally certainly doesn’t, nor does Hale (but he is a little closer with some ML coach time).

Collins and Melvin just have the ML manager time undertheir belts, but Collins was really a long time ago.

I just want the best possibly guy to grow and develop the tam (and with the team) for the next 5+ years. Might be wally, could be Melvin. Ain’t Collins.

No house cleaner transitional boy friend please.

  10. fongy2

Again, I’m not running down Bogar BUT how does anyone know he’s
any better than Collins was a decade ago?
Also, it’s not like he’s gotten any serious consideration on any of the other Mgr openings. I think Alderson’s looking at this whole situation
as a yr to two to retool into a serious contender. Why hire an outsider
question mark? When again you can bring in a guy like a Collins or Melvin from the system, fairly famililar with most of the players who
have some experience and see what happens over the next yr,yr and a half? Tim Bogar won’t be available in a year?

  11. metsfan4decades

I really don’t have strong feelings for any of the 4 candidates – or against any of the 4 candidates. There’s at least one plus and one positive for all 4.

What I find ironic is this: The majority of posts I’ve been reading this week have most Met fans strongly against Melvin. Some even going to the extremes of boycotting games and giving up season tickets if he’s selected. Some have the same opinion of Collins. Nothing I’ve read said the same for either Wally of Hale.

If Alderson does select Melvin….I have to think he knows what he’s doing. There’s some reason he thinks he’s the best of the 4 for this team, for now. So based on that, I’m going to have to give whoever is selected at least the benefit of the doubt to start with.

Emotionally, I’m pulling for Wally. Just not sure though he’s the best man for the job right now though.

At this point, anyone but Hale works for me.

All of the anti-Melvin folks forget he did manage some very good teams. Collins’ 5 full years resulted in 5 second place finishes.

    Backman? My first choice.

Hale? We already hired a coach for a fired manager from the current squad, and that guy had won a manager of the year award. Jerry. Hale is tainted by being a coach of this underachieving squad.

I honestly think it could still be Backman.

If not, I really don’t know, but do not think it will be–or should be–Hale.
