If he is already looking forward to 2012 (and by implication, writing off 2011) then fire his sorry ass today. What the hell kind of comment is that for a coach to make, effectively telling the fans the team isn’t going to be good this year, but look out for the year after?

ANd BS BS BS that he is going to see Ollie. He just wants a free winter vaction to P.R. It will be like when people go to a work conference, and they register, pick up materials, and only show up again for the open bar receptions!

he will say Hi to Ollie, and Bye to Ollie.

And what real man owns a Labradoodle?!?!

      1. saltygary

I got steamrolled by my wife to get a Pomeranian 9 years ago. After 3 months of daily pressure I caved. The sad thing is if she wanted another she would just have to get me a kegerator and she could get ten of them for all I care.

        1. stickguy

Keep the Pomeranians in the Kegerator. Much less annoying that way.

Speaking of kegerators, I was watching DIY network the other day (I am addicted to remodel shows), and some guy was redoing his kitchen. While putting in the new countertop, he drilled an extra hole for a tap, then ran a hose to the basement and connected it to his homemade (in an old fridge) kegerator. A truly amazing idea, that few wives would go for. A tap, right over the kitchen sink.

          1. njstuckintx

Was that the guy who finished the job way over budget and way late?

          2. stickguy

            dont they all?

    2. saltygary

I’m glad to see it. I’m so tired of the BS spin every year. He is not saying the team will be bad or that they are giving up. For the first time it looks like everyone is on the same page on where the team is heading.

Plus there is a good chance he will see Ollie. If there is no improvement soon the team is going to waive him if this no-nonsense attitude is real. If they waive him without any staff member evaluating him it will be seen as poor judgment.

I have to agree with you hear on this. Doesn’t Warthen think about how it’s gonna sound ‘in the press’ before he makes a comment?

Remember the one sentence: ‘John Maine is a liar’ type of thing? Taken out of context, that really got things stirred up. Heck, even with the context, I thought it a strange way of pointing the finger to get his opinion across that Maine is the one who always told him ‘I’m fine’, when in fact, he was not.

I’m still not ready to write off 2011. Know it’s a long shot, but prefer to see the 25 man roster, particularly the pitchers, before I get any predictions in my head.

      1. saltygary

I think there are 2 ways to look at it. For me and other FANS I am writing them off of contention for 2011. For the Team they are putting a plan in place with the goal of getting payroll flexibility in 2012 and to get the team trending up while also re-building the farm over the course of the next couple years. They aren’t giving up on 2011 but they are not in the position to put on the field a product that they expect will get the results that they are looking for. Just like things kept braking badly for the team you never know the team might finally catch a few breaks next season.

        1. metsfan4decades

I can understand this thinking. More or less my expectations as well, w/o just coming out and saying yet ‘we’re not contending at all in 2011′.

Anything can happen. In baseball, anything usually does. It’s a long shot, but a shot nonetheless.

      2. Ceetar

Warthen’s an idiot. What’s he basing this ‘good in 2012′ crap off of? Mejia suddenly becoming Gooden?

If the team is going to write off 2011 and accept losing, they’re going to draw even less fans next year, and make even less money. foolish. Nobody’s saying they should sign Cliff Lee, or anybody to 3+ years, but if you can get a good player now, you get a good player now. You never know what next season will bring. could be no one available. Santana could get hurt and Reyes could leave. In which case the team will be worse, especially since Alderson suggested they shouldn’t just spend it all, and want to maintain a lot of money coming off every year.

    4. TRS86

Keep in mind that this could just be shitty reporting. Reporter could have ask “What do you see for the future of this team? How good do you think they will be in 2012?”

    Poll Question

What gets you sicker having to suffer watching Ollie get beat up in the Mexican Winter League or drinking the water…

    1. saltygary

Wow that’s good. I don’t know. I bet both would give me the same amount of toilet time.

      1. stickguy

lots of beer is a good solution to either problem.

  4. Ceetar

Gee, maybe if Danny boy here had taking this field drop in 2009, Oliver would’ve kept to a better regiment, never would’ve hurt himself, and at least would’ve contributed some.

    1. saltygary

You really think that injuries affected Ollie? He is healthy now and even worse. The guy peaked early, maybe due to roids who knows, but injury was really just a scapegoat.

      1. fongy2

Ollie’s problems are and always were b/t his ears!

      2. kingman 26

Someday Ollie will admit massive PED use, which is why he once threw 94 and now barely can hit 89.

But Ceetar will always love him no matter what.

        1. stickguy

something happened in spring 2009, and I bet it was largely the result of the damned WBC. He wasn’t in pitching shape hitting ST, and instead of building correctly, he just starting throwing a ton of pitches at game speed in the WBC.

He was a mess when he got back, and never recovered from it. And I do also believe the knee thing was legitimate, but no idea when that happened.

and if anything, he looked like he was in better shape (more of a specimin) in 2010 after his boot camp time, so unless he has some kind of arm problem (or the knee was a still an issue), I have no idea where that much velocity went that quick. And I don’t buy PEDs giving him 4-5 MPH at that age. They are more about recovery time anyway I think.

but if that is where they went, start pumping him full of roids again the day after his next blood test.

at this point, it seems that what we saw last year is about all his arm can deliver. so unless he gets magically reinvented as a clean mechanics, repeatable delivery guy, he is DUN done.

          1. fongy2

And none of that is gonna happen. the guy’s a bone-head
when it comes to the science of pitching.
Also, take another look at his career. The guy has been wildly inconsistant since the day he arrived in the majors.

        2. TRS86

Here’s a question I have. Where does this Ollie was a mid-90′s fastball guy come from? He had one year that he averaged 93. That was back in 2004. Since then he has been a low 90′s to high 80′s guy. His best year with the Mets he was at 90.5 for his average FB.

          1. kingman 26

Of course he consistently threw in the 90s in 2007 and 2008.

            Now, he cannot top 89.

According to FanGraphs, in 2007 his average fastball was 92. In 2010 it was 89.

            That is a HUGE difference.

          2. rustyjr

maybe the phantom injury was real and he hasn’t found himself

          3. TRS86

            2007 Mets 65.5% (90.5)

          4. kingman 26

Yes, and the Mets are a team who always hustle, Reyes has great instincts, the Phils are over the hill, Wright never said that to Bowa, and cute little tiny leprechauns run wild in the hills.

          5. TRS86

What the hell is that about? I am just providing you with facts. Fangraphs has his 2007 fastball average at 90.5.

      3. Ceetar

Do I think having pain in his knee that he could barely walk, and then having a surgeon cut into it with a scalpel affected him? yeah..probably. How healthy is he really? the MRI showed his knee was still damaged mid-season last year. Is it possible the tendinitis will never fully heal and he’s shot for the career? yeah, I suppose it is.

        1. oleosmirf

he seemed to be able to hop over the 1st base line just fine

        2. fongy2

Possible BUT more likely the guy’s just not and never has been very good!…….AND THAT years of wear and tear due to the funky delivery has robbed him of ever being able to hit
93/94 again. This is a perfect example of way GM’s,Mgr’s and PC’s mess with guys funky deliveries…Even when they’re pretty successful pitchers.

          1. Ceetar

and Warthen sucked at messing with his delivery.

          2. oleosmirf

and the pitching coach in PIt screwed him up too?

  5. fongy2

Sorry but I just dont grt all this handwringing about the Collins hiring
and now the likelyhood Warthen stays on as PC.
I read ALOT of comments on ALOT of sites crushing The Mets
on this…..Again, I dont get it. LaRussa and Duncan weren’t available
and weren’t coming here if they were. So….what’s the problem exactly?

    1. kingman 26

      I SO agree!!

The team needs an ass-whipping and Collins is just the guy to do it!

And it is not exactly like his teams finished last every year in LA and HOU.

Met fans are a bunch of damn whiners; this situation may be the very best example of this.

      1. stickguy

my favorite by far is still the guy at FWICG that seemed to seriously call for Alderson and his boys to be fired, immediately, for having hired Collins.

        1. fongy2

That actually just made me chuckle……

        2. kingman 26

You must have missed the guy who said Alderson should be fired, and then the team should ask WILLIE RANDOLPH advice on who should be GM.

          1. hazmet

            Yikes, I just shuddered.

      2. fongy2

Not just that but take a look at those teams. Did they underachieve? And I don’t care what anyone says, while getting older sucks theres alot to be said from gaining experience through failures and /or almost-successes.
As for Ollie, I won’t convict anyone w/o solid evidence.
Ollie’s funky delivery, injuries and inconsistant pitching motion
may have alot to do with the reduction in MPH….Nevertheless
the guy can’t pitch. Never could. He was a hard thrower with a funkly delivery which was tricky and had a few hot streaks b/c of it.
He simply doesn’t have the head for pitching and now that hes made millions, has he shown any desire to learn? To get better?
And some fans want to point to him as a failure of Dan Warthen?

    2. stickguy

many people just like to piss and moan. about anything.

and if there is nothing to complain about, they will piss and moan about having nothing to P&M about.

      1. fongy2

In life……Very true. We all know and have known many like that.

      2. kingman 26

        + Millions Stick.

  6. njstuckintx

well, let’s hope we start seeing some action and none of this wait until january stuff.

    1. fongy2

That Seymour punch on Big Ben may have been exactly what we
needed. Looked to me like the whole team took it personally.
I remember few games played by our Steelers since the 70s
where everyone out there seemed flat out pissed on every play.
The Raiders got a good old fashion asskicking yeasterday.

      1. njstuckintx

ain’t that the truth. Troy P. is good, but he’s no Lambert. They need a little of that. Hopefully the proverbial beast has awoken.

And to smack around the Raiders… Warms the soul!
