      lol I try I try !!!!

Don’t worry about quotes. just link the twitter account like a URL, and literally quote what he said.

        1. Mr North Jersey

          Exactly.

  2. Ceetar

Stop with this “fit their park perfectly” crap. half the games are on the road. sign quality pitchers, not ones that can get away with pitching badly.

That said, Chris Young is a good pitcher.

However, the Padres passed on his option and in his last start his fastball was 85-86. Now, that was recently back from shoulder surgery, but does it recover? He’s a lot like John Maine, only his healthy seasons were better.

    1. kingman 26

They play half their games at home.

Signing pitchers whose styles fit the park is an excellent idea.

      Why wouldn’t it be?

      1. stickguy

I interpreted that as a request to sign better quality pitchers, not crappy ones that can have their sheer level of crapitude hidden by a spacious ballpark, at least 1/2 the time.

        1. Ceetar

Exactly. Sign good pitchers. Keep in mind the other pitchers look better in Citi too, so the ‘benefit’ isn’t that great.

Although, signing a so-so pitcher cheap, and then selling high by inflating his value via Citi Field would be a shrewd move, and much like Billy Beane does/did with closers.

    The country music singer?!?

  4. Mr North Jersey

I think that Alderson and DePodesta with their past affiliation with the Padres know more about Young than many other GM’s round the NL so they may feel that Young is a good risk/investment.

I have 3 links that I recommend for those seeking more data.

    1. stickguy

so now instead of former expos and nats, we will load up on former padres, Blue Jays, and Dodgers?

well, if nothing else, at least a better talent pool to pull from!

      1. TRS86

        :)
Nothing like signing those damn French Californians.

  5. Prismo

Can’t judge this until I see the contract.

    1. Mr North Jersey

      Agreed Prismo.

      1. njstuckintx

        10-4!

    2. oleosmirf

well we know its gonna be 1 year only thats for sure

  6. njstuckintx

Wanny’s not going to be thrilled with Young’s walk ratio. 4,2 in 2008, 4.7 in 2009 and 5.0 in 2010 (was only 2 games).

    1. kingman 26

But look at his hits allowed—good every year, and pretty amazing some years.

Even last year—20 IP and 11 BB, but only 10 hits!

Sure, he may not be healthy, but considering what is out there, I love this move.

      1. njstuckintx

oh, i like the move. Or, should I say, I’ll like the move dependent upon the cost. Just in perspective to what Wanny was saying about walks (even though that may have been specifically for relievers…)

I’ve no issue with this move at all if he’s brought in to compete for the 5th spot. I’m not giving him the #3 just yet. Upside galore, thought, so could be a very nice addition. Good move.

        1. kingman 26

Agree all around…but still, the pretty unusually low hits allowed numbers have to be taken into account with the walks….

    2. wannybackstra

You are correct, NJ. But as you and others have agreed, this signing will be judged on its value. If it’s a low risk make good contract and he gives them a dozen healthy starts for little or no money then even I can’t complain about a few too many walks.

But if they pay him as if he’s got a spot locked up in the rotation, then I can complain about his health and his walks.

      1. TRS86

I think it will be split down the middle. Because of the market he will get an MLB deal and will be paid like a 4-5. So I would guess 1-5ish with incentives and a 2nd year option. Overpaying a little? Yeah. But again in this market, maybe not.

    3. TRS86

True, he does walk a lot of hitters which keeps his innings down. Good with the bad. My hope is that he is a guy that finally puts it together. He has amazing stuff and most likely just needs to trust that stuff a little more.

      1. stickguy

put that description together with the 2 years of bad shoulder and surgeries, and you got John Maine!

        1. TRS86

Except John Maine never had the potential of Chris Young. Young’s WHIP were above average and factor that in with his obscene H/9.

  7. kingman 26

Considering what is out there and available, I like this a lot.

This is not Omar; it’s not going to be a ridiculous deal.

  8. oleosmirf

look at his lines in his 3 games he pitched at the end of Sept last season. Granted he only went 4 IP, 5 IP, 5 IP b/c of a pitch count but thats an encouraging sign nonetheless.

    http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/gl.cgi?id=youngch03&t=p&year=2010

    1. kingman 26

The guy doesn’t allow any hits!

      That has to be good….

      1. njstuckintx

It has to be the park!!!! :P

        1. Mr North Jersey

how will he handle the cold April of 2011?

          1. njstuckintx

He’ll still be recovering from a thyroid issue, so he’ll be warm in FL.

          2. oleosmirf

the same way he does/did when he plays Colorado, SF or any of the other cold weather teams on the road in April

          3. Mr North Jersey

i should of noted in parenthesis (sarcasm) .

        2. kingman 26

“It has to be the park!!!! :P

          LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  9. Gonzo Will

I guess Sandy getting in the game.

  10. oleosmirf

i knew this was too good to be true

    http://twitter.com/StevePopper/status/9418641573421056#

    1. stickguy

they always say that, 5 minutes before the deal is announced!

I do like it. hell, add Kyle Davies (assuming he is non-tendered) to make Real pee in his pants, and we got some pitchers to sort through.

Young can be the injury rehab wing and a prayer guy. Davies will be the good stuff, healthy, but will he ever put it together guy.

Of course, it would be nice to add “good pitcher and healthy” guy, but they are a lot harder to find!

and still time for a trade.

      1. oleosmirf

honestly though if Ollie and Castillo are gone and our rotation is Dickey, Pelf, Niese, Young, Gee i mean i can live with that

        1. stickguy

if ollie and castillo are both gone, you can be in the rotation and I will still have a net increase in my happiness %!

    2. Prismo

      Thank you Buster Olney.

I’m so ****ing sick of beat writers.

      1. wannybackstra

but buster isn’t a beat writer.

        1. Prismo

          you know what i mean

  11. stickguy

I understand that Tulo is quite good, but this can’t possibly drive Reyes’s price down.

I still that that if they let him play out the year, he is gone, goodbye!

9:22pm: Renck now says (on Twitter) that the extension will pay Tulowitzki $130MM over seven years from 2014-2020

    fromMLBTR

    1. njstuckintx

      Amen.

    2. metsfan4decades

      7 yr/130MM?

This one surprise me. He’s only half way through the 6 year extension they gave him to begin with.

    3. TRS86

That being said, wouldn’t this also mean that he would ask for the moon in an extension as well? If so, take the 2 picks and move on.

  12. metsfan4decades

    Young?
I guess we have to take a chance on someone out there, considering we’re 2 pitchers short for the starting 5, never mind needed depth.

If this is true, wonder what the terms of this deal will be?

    1. kistics

I would assume a one year deal with lots of incentives. Something similar to Kelvim Escobar type of deal $1.25-1.5M w/incentives.

      1. TRS86

I have to think that in this market for a guy like Young it will be more than 1.25 and closer to 5. Perhaps a little less but this is a pitching then market, you are going to have to overpay.

        1. kistics

For a guy who has never pitched 200 innings and has been injured past 3 seasons, $5M guaranteed is little too steep, no?

Given the pitching market, I’m content with $3M + incentives (to $6-7M)

I think he was paid $6+M last season.

          1. TRS86

            http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/rosajo01.shtml

De La Rosa, while obviously slightly healthier (only made 20 starts last year) has also never pitched 200 innings and just got 3/33. When healthy, Young is a much better pitcher. While I like De La Rosa, the guy has pitched 32 starts once in his career and after that his high is 23. So again, in this market, I would take the 1-5 and run.

          2. njstuckintx

            You’re talking 130, 185 & 121.2 innings vs. 102, 76, 20. I would hope for 3-4 mil + incentives.

          3. TRS86

Right, there is a big difference. That is why DeRosa got 3/33. We are splitting hairs. If the Mets can get him for 1/3-4 fine. If they have to go 1/5 then I won’t complain at all.

          4. njstuckintx

            Me either!

  13. TRS86

I hope this is true. This is one of the guys I have been touting for a while. He and Davies. But regardless of the 2nd one, Young is still young, got good stuff and could rebound into an upper rotation type guy.

  14. TRS86

You know the Dodgers are really making a nice rotation

    Lilly, Kershaw, Garland, Kuroda, Billingsley

    1. njstuckintx

Yeah, it’s fairly solid. Too bad they have have their own Castillo of sorts in Uribe…

      1. TRS86

Uribe provides them something they need however. He’s more like a Valentin than a Castillo. If he provides them what he did the Giants last year it will be a good deal.

        1. njstuckintx

Was more referencing the contract. They’ll come to not like it so much in year 2 would be my guess.

          1. TRS86

Oh I agree. But in that division if he provides what he did last year it makes them a whole lot better.
