I think I’ve been Minayaized. I still cringe when I hear the Mets talk about acquiring players because deep down I knew they were lying.
This week’s question is: Does Sandy Alderson make any moves during this year’s Winter Meetings?

Alserson will come back with at least one player – don’t be surprised if it is a rule 5 draftee

Not sure, but my guess is that he comes back with one or two pieces of depth for the team, either role players or rotational depth. Either way, I’m gonna sit back relax and watch everything unfold.

yes. Like rusty said, at least 1 rule 5 guy (likely for the pen). Maybe a minor FA or small trade. Depth and/or filler parts.
I still don’t see how people are expecting (or more accurately, pissed off that they won’t be getting) a big name, expensive FA. they were never doing that this off season. They added the last straw to the camels back last year with Bay, making the team fully top loaded and expensive.
that doesn’t mean they can’t add some medium parts (spend 10mill? or some such number) to fill out the roster. Just that the team was built with a 2 year window before a bunch of player contracts ran out.
If nothing else, they should be happy to see a multi-year planning process in place, instead of always changing horses in mid stream each off season.

If there is someone affordable and worth getting, then yes, he will get someone.
I fully trust the new regime.
For now.

quite possibly too many people are taking what Sandy said too literally. I would not be surprised to see something big and unexpected happen, even though sandy has not indicated he plans to do it.
over at FWICG, a poster tossed out a conceptual trade with St. louis that was centered around reyes and Rasmus (with whatever moving parts needed to make it work). Without saying that specific deal could or should happen, this is exactly the type of deal they should be looking at. especially if they are unsure about extending reyes.
I also think they would add some payroll if they have the chance to get another LT core building block type now.
and if they could do a deal like this, it would have to add to an avalanche of more moves (beltran, etc).
maybe just me, but if something comes Aldersons way that is worth doing, he will do it.

So, you trade Reyes for Rasmus. Then you have to move Beltran and then you have to find a SS. Don’t misunderstand my questioning to think that Rasmus isn’t a special player, and I’d love to have him, I just think a lot of dominoes would have to fall.
It also doesn’t take into consideration that Carpenter (15M 2012 option) and especially Pujols (2012 FA) have to be signed & Wainwright is starting to balloon salary wise, I can’t see the Card’s looking to take on another potential contract extension project.

I said it was conceptual. And I can’t speak to the cards needs of course.
but from the mets standpoint, they have to make a decision on Reyes. And if they are unsure about him being extended (either wanting to do it, or if he will), they should consider options.
and if they can get a long term potential stud, under control for 5 years, to be part of the new core, then you have to consider it.
and if they didnt make more moves, it is the same situation they are in now, but instead of beltran and pagan, it is beltran and rasmus for CF and RF, with pagan back to 4th OF.
And I would expect that if they move reyes, it means they would get a 1 year stop gap for SS, unless a young option came back.

I hear you man. I’d love to have Rasmus, and knowing Beltran is walking, Pagan is 30 and Reyes most likely will be gone, it would definitely be a step towards establishing a new “Core” for sure.

Hansel Coste:
Jenrry Mejia won the match up against Starlin Castro and then retired Fernado Tatis to complete his first 3 outs, without runs admitted.

Winter Meetings Preview and Jays Deals Musings
Possible Deal #5: Jose Reyes in return for Yunel Escobar and 2 prospects, most likely pitching prospects. This is another long shot to be sure, but one that I would not ignore at this point since the Mets are said to be shopping Reyes. If Alex could complete this deal, he’d be giving the Mets a starting SS, relieving some of their salary woes, and would be acquiring one of the elite SS in all of baseball. Bringing in Reyes and Davis as a possible combination at the top of the lineup would provide the Jays with more speed than they’ve ever had. When you think about how they acquired Escobar, the Jays would be landing Reyes in return for a FA they got to use for close to a full season and 2 prospects. Not a bad price at all if you ask me. Escobar is familiar with the NL East having played in ATL and would be motivated to beat them. At only 27 years old, Reyes is still young and the Jays have stated that they’re willing to bring in high maintenance personalities, and Reyes may fit that profile. Since Reyes will be a FA in 2012, the price can’t be too steep from the Mets. Dealing him would free up $11 million for them and would allow them to start rebuilding into a real contender. If he walks from the Jays in 2012, they would likely get 2 very high picks as he would most likely be a Type A FA.

depending on the pitching prospects, I could certainly consider that.

Give the Nats credit for one thing at least. They are trying.
$ 61,400,000 payroll in 2010.
Now with Werth signing it looks like they may still be in the area in 2011.

7 years 126 mil for Jason Werth is ridiculous however they have some absolutely nasty young players and in 2-3 years they will be very scary.

if that is the actual deal, it is insane. the same contract beltran got, for a 32 YO (I think he plays next year at that)? 7 years, for a guy that was heavily supported by his home park?
Well, good luck with that Nats. especially by the time Strasburg comes back and harper might be ready, he could already be tailing off at 34+

I don’t know if Werth was a smart move if the reports that he got 7 yrs, $126M are true?

The reports are true. Wow I just don’t see it. I would of resigned Dunn if that was the case.

The Werth deal is ridiculous. I thought only Minaya would have signed a player past (barely) his prime for a 7 year deal until he’s 38.
My rational Phillies fan friends mostly had the same reaction “can’t blame him” – and you really can’t.

for this contract, I expect he would have signed anywhere. Pitt, KC, Orix.
