Ricciardi: “Moneyball” a Farce?

Thanks to Metsblog for the link.

In an interview with John Harper of the Daily News, new Mets assistant JP Ricciardi had the following to say in reference to the book “Moneyball”.

“It’s been a farce,” he said. “Michael Lewis is an outstanding writer, but there were a lot of liberties taken with the book that really didn’t paint a lot of people in the right light.”

Ricciardi wanted to make it known that there were many misconceptions created by the book.

One more quote and then you have to read it for yourself.  It’s a great read.

“We did a lot of the things with the A’s because we had no money, and we had to find value in players that didn’t cost a lot. That’s where I think the whole Moneyball concept was mangled. We believed in on-base percentage because we thought it gave us a bit of an edge. We were looking for any edge we could get to close the payroll gap (with other contenders) in any way, shape, or form.”

I understand what he’s saying, but the true meaning of “moneyball” or whatever you want to call it will always hold true: maximize value by obtaining as much information as possible. That’s it.

Also according to MB Dave Hudgens is the leading candidate for hitting coach. When you read MB’s article it makes him appear about as qualified for hitting coach as you or I. Until you actually look and see that he was the hitting coach for the A’s, Astro’s and Indians and has 20 years of experience.
He even has his own video.

The really farcical part of it is yet to come…

There is a major movie being made of Moneyball, starring Brad Pitt as Billy Beane, Philip Seymour Hoffman as Art Howe, and Johan Hill as a character based I believe on DePodesta.

    This is not a joke.

I mean, it kind of is, but it is for real.

I thought it was just saying the word Saber that did it to him…

          1. Mr North Jersey

when u think of saber you have to use the 6 degrees of separation principal also with him.

            vegetable=bean=billy beane=moneyball=saber get it?

I think I want just a little more credibility than guessing at tweets.

Seems like the Reds are locking up all their youngin’s for some long term deals.

As for Hudgens…is his daughter Vanessa?

    1. stickguy

every team seems to be locking up 26-27-28 YO stars. Except the mets of course. Unless you don’t put reyes in that catagory.

saw this comment on Toby’s minors blog. loved the last line.

“I’ve been asked to handicap the Mets spring training battle for second base between Emaus, Daniel Murphy, Justin Turner, Luis Castillo and Ruben Tejada. Right now, I’d say it’ll be a battle with Tejada starting behind the other four thanks to his youth and punchless offensive game. Turner brings the most defensive versatility of the rest, while Murphy brings the most pop in his bat. Emaus brings a tremendous plate eye. Castillo merely brings the final year of an ill-advised contract. “
