It’s the New York Knights from “The Natural ” j/k we know it ain’t the Mets

    1. Mr North Jersey

      Shhhhh…. Let a feller dream why don’t you? :-P

  2. Mr North Jersey

Yeah but in truth I don’t want the Mets bidding any 7 year offers to Lee.

    1. rustyjr

Lmfao btw what are you doin up so early ? Don’t you know this is my domain ? Infamy should be ready @ 2 today

  3. metsfan4decades

Yes, we know it’s not the Mets – which O.K. with me. Would be nice but not at 7 years and mega bucks.

I have to wonder….is there really a ‘mystery team’? In today’s day and age, you would think someone would have found out who. So makes me think it’s just rumors to jack up the price of those who are really in on him.

    1. Ceetar

The mystery team is the storyline for many reporters who are tired of writing the same thing. It’s a plot twist. It allows them to speculate about bidding wars, and speculate about random teams acquiring Lee (As every once in a while someone reports X is the mystery team) then, if they don’t like the team he signs wi th, they can trot out the mystery team as red herring, and talk about them bidding against themselves.

      1. kingman 26

        + Millions to you both.

Heyman tweeting about a “mystery team”??

        LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. TRS86

That would be team “Darek Braunecker”. Either way lets sure as hell hope it’s not the Mets. Wow, what a terrible contract this one is going to end up being. Jason Schmidt x10? Too risky for me.

    1. stickguy

That’s a nice change though. Usually it is “team Boras”

  5. Ceetar

    http://www.amazinavenue.com/2010/12/13/1872571/midnight-monday-mets-mind-boggler#comments

fun quiz on Amazin’ today. name all 47 2010 Mets. I got 41, not that shabby.

    1. metsfan4decades

I saw that, but I read the comments on it before I realized what it was all about. After reading the comments from some on who they missed, I figured it would be cheating then to try it myself – LOL…..

    2. kistics

      got 39

    3. saltygary

Ugh I only got 27 but my kid wouldn’t stop bugging me…And for some reason I forgot that their was the catching position, I didn’t put down one. The rest was bench and bullpen along with on veteran that I remembered was only on the team for a month and I couldn’t remember his name.

    4. oleosmirf

should be 48. they forgot Omir Santos, who was called up but didnt get in a game. Of course the 3 players I managed to forget were Cora, Tatis and Francouer

      1. stickguy

Freud would be proud of you.

      2. metsfan4decades

How in the world can you forget about Franceour? LOL….

I didn’t even know Tatis was on the roster so I definitely would have missed him.

      3. rustyjr

        im a genius

    5. wannybackstra

Had 42. But nanoyed at the 5 I missed: Valdes, Hessman, and I already forgot the other three again!

  6. wannybackstra

I’d bet the Angles are the surprise team — assuming there is one.

    1. TRS86

According to MLBTR the mystery team is only offering 4-5 years so it’s moot if that is the case.

      1. metsfan4decades

Well shoot….the Mets could offer 2 years and be yet another mystery team…

        1. njstuckintx

That would qualify as a long term contract though. No Long Term Contracts! Ever! (a little mommy dearest for you all.)

          1. metsfan4decades

            ‘No wire hangers’!! LOL….

    2. kistics

Speaking of Angels, Mattsblog has an article on Beltran to Angels.

Would you do Beltran for Kazmir swap? Kazmir makes ~$14M which will give the Mets about $4M in salary room.

      I probably wouldn’t.

      1. stickguy

no. It actually will COST the Mets more money this year. Beltran is only getting piad 13, with 5.5 deferred. so out of pocket it means then are spending more.

and Kazmir is walking too, right? Unless the plan is to offer arbitration, and hope for picks. Or extend him.

Just does not seem like anything in this for the Mets. Now, if the angels toss in a prospect too to even up the talent inequity, then we might be talking.

Who knows, maybe Sandy’s plan is to finally acquire (or re-acquire) all the players that the Met fans have recently been up in arms about losing out on! Beato, Kazmir. Who would be next?

        1. Ceetar

          Vlad. A-Rod.

        2. Ceetar

          Manny, Ruben Gotay, Val Pascucci.

          1. kistics

LMillz, Heilman… oh wait.. wrong list..

        3. kistics

Well Kazmir is neither type A or B FA so far. So, he would not bring any picks even if he walks.

Agreed on adding a prospect or two. But it can’t be couple throw ins.

        4. TRS86

Not sure if I would do Beltran for Kazmir or not. I think I most likely would.

          1. oleosmirf

i would want them to throw in Rivera so we at least have a RF but i’d rather just sign Chris Young and keep Beltran for a few months.

          2. TRS86

I like Rivera but I would rather them throw in a prospect I think.

          3. TRS86

Unless they are taking Castillo to even up that Rivera money or paying part of Kaz.

          4. oleosmirf

didnt realize Kazmir had such a large contract. Ill pass then. Im not trading Beltran for a SP not much better than whats on the market.

      2. stickguy

although with the Red sox out of the mix, the Angels are probably the next logical suitor. Probably should be a few other teams that are close and could use one mor big bat though.

      3. kingman 26

Kazmir is about to turn 27.

I would trade Beltran for Kazmir and be thrilled about it.

  7. stickguy

TOo bad there is no actual Mets stuff to talk about. Other than the coaching official announcement, which will be an anti-climax at this point.

so it is quite possible there may not be an actual roster moves made for another 3 weeks + at this point. Hopefully they announce signing Chris Young by then!

while I know getting a new FO and cleaning out the patronage hacks from the organization will ultimately be a good thing, what a boring off season this is from a “team on the field” standpoint.

wonder if Sandy is going to actually make 1 trade (none so far, right?)

    1. metsfan4decades

I read where Sandy wanted to have another SP signed by Dec 31st. What he wants to do and what may be reality could be two different things though….

      1. stickguy

sign young now, and I will be happy. Of the various Meh options, he seems like a decent choice. then add some more guys for depth, cause they sure as hell need more of that.

  8. metsfan4decades

I saw this comment on MLBTR post on mystery team in on Cliff Lee:

‘News Flash…cheapskate Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria shows up at Winter Meeting for only the 3rd time in 10 years…other GM’s laugh him off and joke “are you here to sign Cliff Lee”?’

If that’s true, just wow…..can you imagine us Met fans if the Mets GM didn’t bother to show up at the Winter Meetings?

    1. kistics

      GM or owner?

      1. metsfan4decades

Oh right…good catch. That went right me. My mind saw ‘GM’, but it clearly says owner. No biggie then…

  9. metsfan4decades

Anyone listening to the Mets webcast live with Sandy on MLB.com?

He just said Mookie was primarily brought in to work with the OFs., even though he’s the 1st base coach.

    1. saltygary

If that’s the case I would look at it as a sign that Duda and Nieuwenhuis should see some decent action over the year. I would not be surprised if Beltran is gone by June due to injury or trade and Pagan might be spun as well.

    2. TRS86

I don’t think Kirk is near ready and right now not sure Duda has a role. You would think that if young OF defense was a major focus they would have placed him in AAA>

      1. saltygary

I agree unless they are focused on teaching Bay to not run into a wall again. Not that veterans can’t learn but what real impact would Mookie have on Beltran, Pagan and Bay. Now I could see getting someone to work with the infield especially with young Ike and the five guys that will play 2nd next season.

        1. stickguy

pagan maybe. He might not be a finished product. And certainly he could work with less experienced guys like Duda and Evans.

And Hale is the IF coach, so why not have the OF coach at 1B? Gotta do something with him.

          1. TRS86

Yeah I agree, just saying I don’t think he was brought in primarily to work on OF defense. I think the brought him in most likely because they believed his personality and experience were a fit for the team.

          2. stickguy

there is also always someone on the team I think that serves as the baserunning coach. Not sure hwo (if anyone) did that last year. Probably Razor.

  10. metsfan4decades

”Sorry, but I’ll never understand why Jose Reyes keeps getting demonized for animated handshakes or celebratory dances. Why is that the Rangers can make antler signs on their helmets – while standing on second base! – in the middle of a playoff game and it’s considered fun or cute. But Reyes can’t do a handshake with a teammate at the top of the dugout steps? I agree with Terry Collins. If another team has a problem with Reyes – let’s say the Phillies for instance – then let them do something about it other than talk. The Mets badly need an attitude transfusion, so they should worry less about what everyone thinks and more about winning baseball games… As usual with the Mets, the focus is never where it should be. Maybe Sandy Alderson and Collins can change that.”

    ~ David Lennon, Newsday

    *******************************

    My sentiments, exactly.

    1. TRS86

Baiting Kingman, Baiting Kingman. All hands on deck. LOL.

      1. kingman 26

Missed the last line, which is what I ALWAYS mention:

“The problem isn’t the dancing, it’s the losing. Win, and we love it.”

Every time I mention this issue, I mention this line.

        Every time.

The Rangers dancing in the playoffs and Jose dancing in May when we choke and/or suck every year are utterly different.

Which I also say every time.

My guess is that the Rangers and Victorino don’t/won’t dance when they suck.

I guess some of you have the emphasis on watching Jose dance like the idiot he is; I prefer watching the team win. If they win, Jose can dance his empty head off. Which I enjoyed watching in 2006.

        1. TRS86

So let me see if I understand this. IF Reyes ever wins a WS then he can dance for the rest of his life? Also, the time and energy Johan spent making a handshake for each player was not over the top or dancing?

          1. kingman 26

“IF Reyes ever wins a WS then he can dance for the rest of his life?”

Not sure, but winning a WS—or hitting over .028 in September if we are in the race–would be a good start.

“the time and energy Johan spent making a handshake for each player was not over the top or dancing”

In retrospect, it was pretty silly. But he was trying to fit in on a team where dancing comes before winning, so I cannot blame him.

          2. TRS86

I just think there is a double standard and you know I am not a huge Reyes fan.

I honestly don’t care about his dancing, I just want him to perform. Regardless. If dancing gets him pumped up and he is performing then I will go and personally play a soundtrack for him after each hit.

          3. oleosmirf

i could care less about dancing or any thing b/c its all media fabrication and fan paranoia. I dont believe in bulletin board material unless its a direct insult to the opposition which Reyes has never done.

          4. stickguy

I’m with you. SO what that he did some high five stuff in the dugout?

Some people make it sound like he brings out a sheet of cardboard to 2B, and does a 5 minute break dance exhibition ever time he hits a double.

and people have to pick one side. You want lifeless, dead, emotionless team, or fiery, g=ritty, balls to the wall hustlers?

          5. metsfan4decades

            I’ll take door number 2, stick…..

          6. kingman 26

The last two years we have had a “lifeless, dead, emotionless team.”

        2. metsfan4decades

I believe the Rangers do that antler thing all season – which, of course, is long before anyone knows if they’re a ‘winner’.

And what constitues a winner anyway?
          - going to the WS
          - going to post season
          - above .500 in season
          - on top in a particular game
          - coming from behind in a particular game

Everyone’s got a different idea on this.
My mindset is if they’re playing to the best of their ability, having fun, then those ‘handshakes’ should only add to the loose type atmosphere. It’s not like he’s showing up the other team when he does that. Heck…most every time Reyes gets a double of triple he does that smacking of the hands once and pointing one finger from both hands to the Mets dugout. I’ve just got no problem with that. And time and time again, I see many players on many teams doing some similar type thing.

          1. stickguy

But MF, the mets are losing choking dogs. They are not allowed to show any emotion. In fact, they should pout and mope out on the field for being such losing choking dogs.

All those other players are fiery winners that play with heart.

Good point though that as a franchise, before they made the PS this year, the Rangers made the Mets look like a dynasty.

          2. metsfan4decades

As others have mentioned, there’s Johan with his handshakes.
There’s KRod with his end-of-game, save-in-the-books, Ho-Ray antics and pointing to the sky (which really annoys the hell out of Philly fans).

You get the picture…..IMO this whole Reyes thing is overblown and frankly, getting old.

Here’s hoping we’re over .500 next year and Reyes can just go back to being Reyes w/o all the drama reactions.

          3. TRS86

That’s just it. If we see a year full of Reyes dancing the night away, then chances are we have had an excellent year from Reyes which no matter how you look at it is good for the Mets.

          4. kingman 26

Stick, you sure have problems with things that are not expressed as extremes.

          5. TRS86

Yeah that’s the problem I have. When is it acceptable and for how long is it acceptable? Will Vicki be able to dance and parade around for the rest of his life because he and mostly his TEAM won the WS?

I just don’t get the double standard. Either dancing is appropriate or it’s inappropriate.

  11. metsfan4decades

Sandy wraps up with fans should be excited come 2011 and going forward. He said ‘I certainly am. We have a good crop of core players, lots of talent and it’s exciting seeing younger players develop. –One of the most exciting things in this job is the draft and seeing where those players take you’.

He said 2nd base will be a competition come opening day with Castillo, Murphy, Turner, Emaus and ‘etc’ (etc. being the quote used from whatever fan on Twitter asked this question).

He also thinks Beato has a good chance to stick in the BP.

    1. oleosmirf

i’d be shocked if Castillo makes the team. Turner and Emaus are both out of options so if Castillo were to make the team one (if not both) are lost.

even if Castillo were to come back in shape and semi-productive, you still gotta go with the young guys anyway.

      1. stickguy

I don’t think I will. That is just PR talk, to not hurt his feelings, but mostly since they are still trying to trade him.

Probably does get to come to camp, but without actually being part of the competitin.

maybe, at best, the fall back if every other option completely sucks, and/or gets hurt, and they literally have no one left to use. And even then he might get cut.

I really only asked for 4 things at the end of the year. Fire Omar and Jerry (well, 5 counting Hojo), and make sure Ollie and Luis are not on the roster come opening day. Not even X-mas yet, and I am 1/2 way home!

  12. TRS86

    “We’re here to execute.”

    Look out Ollie and Luis!!!

    1. stickguy

I feel snarky this morning. so how about this to get rid of ollie.

He is playing in Mexico. Sandy wants to see him pitch. Have Sandy fly down, and bring ollie’s entire 2012 salary with him. In cash.

Then just hand it to him, and announce what it is, and run like hell.

      1. rustyjr

can we just pay him his weight in tequila and chimichangas ? he wouldn’t know the difference

        1. stickguy

You missed the key part of my plan.

You have any idea what happens to a guy walking around with $12,000,000 in cash these days down in Mexico?

          1. rustyjr

it involves a donkey, spanish fly and a camera and a whole lotta cerveza doesnt it ?

          2. stickguy

we need to catch a game together sometime. Should be a fun time.

          3. rustyjr

tell me when and im there lol btw new infamy post is up

          4. stickguy

need to organize another RDM day at Citi this season. Enough of us are close enough to get there.

and I heard on the internet there will be plenty of good seats available. Wait until July, and we can get a block on Stub Hub for $1 each!

      2. metsfan4decades

        LOL…
I think I saw somewhere over the weekend that Sandy might not have time now to go see Ollie pitch in that league.

        1. oleosmirf

because one of their scouts or someone of importance most likely told him he’s garbage its a waste of time (and money)

          1. TRS86

Or the fact that he’s gonna be in ST so what is the use?

          2. stickguy

Sandy did say it wasn’t really to watch him pitch, more so to meet him and have a chat. ANd hell, probably to get the hell out of frigid NY for a while (free holiday trip to P.R. courtesy of the Mets!)

at this point though, he may have figured why even bother with him. Just wish him to the cornfield and be done with it.

          3. rustyjr

ahh twilight zone reference !!! love it !!!

          4. TRS86

I will almost bet that Ollie will be in ST and “competing” for a spot. So no real need to go to watch him.

          5. rustyjr

you didn’t need psychic abilities to see that one coming TRS

          6. stickguy

good use of quotation marks there Real.

The only way Ollie and Slappy aren’t in ST is if some team shocks us all and makes a trade offer. But I agree that they won’t be competing quite the same as the other options.

Frnakly, if either one makes the opening day roster, something went horribly wrong.

          7. TRS86

By the way, Oliver is #20 on the Mets all-time K list. ;)

          8. TRS86

1 more than Nolan Ryan (and yes the innings and games are almost identical and Nolan actually walked significantly more batters).

          9. metsfan4decades

Really, TRS? I did not know that.

I remember Nolan as being wild and I hated that trade. Thought they gave up on him too early.

Now…I’m not saying Ollie and Nolan are even remotely in the same class but who would have though?

          10. metsfan4decades

            *thought

          11. TRS86

Yeah, me either 4D. I guess it shows as to why Omar did give Perez the extension. Too much and too long but for sure it had merit.

          12. stickguy

obviously in hindsight the ollie deal was terrible, but it was certainly defendable at the time. Especially since Omar kept it to 3 years. Given his age, 5 would not have been an unreasonable length to ask for.

  13. stickguy

Hey,m I see Knog snuck back onto FWICG.com, under the alias “anthony garcia”:

Anthony Garcia Dec 13, 2010, 1:34 pm at 1:34 pm # No Arod was 6’3 as a shortstop. I hope this kid is a serious guy, a clutch, not a kid that does cart wheels in the dugout. Cause Jose Reyes is a joker. We need a leader, not a joker.

    1. kingman 26

      LOL!
