This Day In Mets Infamy With Rusty : The ” If You Want Blood – You Got It !!” Edition 12-19-10

" Lets hope this is the closest thing to a blood bath we see this season"

Yes I know there are many Mets fans out there with boiling blood because of the perceived inactivity of the Mets on both the free agent and trade markets.

I say if you want to see blood spill, donate your own two weeks from now .

As per the Flushing Flash newsletter

The Mets will host their annual Winter Blood Drive for the New York Blood Center on Thursday, January 6th, 2011 in Citi Field’s Caesars Club from 10am to 5pm (Donors should enter through the Hodges VIP Entrance). Donors must be 17 years of age (16 with parental permission), weigh at least 110 lbs and be in good health. Each donor will receive a pair of tickets to a 2011 Mets home game during the month of April. Bring ID with photo or signature. Patrons may use parking lot G at the corner of 126th Street and Roosevelt Avenue. Call 1-800-933-BLOOD for more information.

What could be a better present to give in this during this time of good will towards men. yes  you will get two free ducats to a Mets game in April. But what is even better is that you will be giving the gift of hope and possibly life to a person who needs it most.

So I ask of you to come down on January 6th – hell bring a friend or seven or eight to help keep the tri state areas blood supply at full capacity. Just remember you would want someone to give that gift to you if you were in need.

And with that  said… HERE COMES THE INFAMY !!!!

Mets alumni celebrating birthdays today are :

Mets spot starter/ middle reliever from ’65-’66, Rob Gardner is 66 today (1944).

Reserve catcher from the ’04 team, Tom Wilson is 40 (1970) .

Reserve outfielder from the ’07 team, Chip Ambres is 31(1979) .

Sadly on this day in ’08 , baseball lost one of it’s most colorful personalities when one time Mets, Rangers and Pirates Pitcher, Dock Ellis passed away. He will always be remembered for allegedly throwing a no-hitter while under the influence of L.S.D.

New York Mets signed free agent third baseman, Mike Cubbage of the Minnesota Twins on December 19, 1980. Cubbage would appear in 67 games for the Mets in 1981, batting .212 with one homer and four RBI’s. He would later on be the third base coach for the Mets and was a interim skipper for them in ’91 after the firing of Bud Harrelson. I still maintain that this organization still suffers from theCubbage Curse” !

New York Mets released utility man, Bill Almon on December 19, 1980.

New York Mets traded outfield prospect, Al Shirley to the Kansas City Royals for catcher, Brent Mayne on December 19, 1995.

Cleveland Indians signed reliever, Danny Graves of the New York Mets as a free agent on December 19, 2005.

New York Mets released Japanese pitching export, Kaz Ishii on December 19, 2005. He will always be remembered for his heroics during the ’05 Subway Series against the Yankees.

New York Mets signed free agent outfielder, Chip Ambres of the Boston Red Sox on December 19, 2006. He would appear as a pinch hitter in three games for the Mets in ’07, even getting the game winning RBI against the Dodgers before he was sent back down to the minors.

And while you are home rooting for either the Jets or Giants, just remember there are just 103 days until the Mets open the 2011 season against the Florida Marlins in Miami and 110 days until the Mets 2011 home opener against the Washington Nationals at Citi Field.

BEWARE TAILGATERS !! Rumor has it that Mo Vaughn will attempt to crash tailgate parties at the new Medowlands Stadium today !!!!

Very good cause but there’s something to be said about donating just for the sake of donating.

Working for the Federal gov., they have twice yearly blood drives. First year on the job way back when, I went down to donate. Nurse takes one look at me and says: ‘I want you to go over to medical, have them weigh you and if you’re at least 110 lbs, have them sign this certificate and bring it back’. She goes on to say, ‘and I’ll eat my hat if you weigh 110 lbs’.

I can remember being highly insulted and just walking out of there, not bothering. Boy, no wonder they say youth is wasted on the young. Someone said that to me today, they’d be at the top of my Xmas card list……

Blood drives are a good thing, if you meet the criteria (not everyone does).

and looks like the Mets are doing everything they can to get fannies in the seats for April games this year. Coat drive, blood drive, pretty soon they will be handing out freebies to the homeless people sleeping in the park. well, maybe not them.

They should just send extras out to season ticket holders (for games they don’t already have). Not like they will be selling a lot of walk ups that early in the season.

I hear ya, stick – on both points.

I have no problem with all the Mets are doing to try and promote ticket sales. At least they realize we’re they’re at. They lowered prices to some extent, they’re tying free tickets into supporting good causes and they’ve got guys like Strawberry and Bay making calls to season ticket holders. I’m sure some Met fans think it’s cheesy but I think it’s better than ignoring the past couple of years…..
