This Day In Mets Infamy With Rusty : The ” Merry Christmas ” Edition

"Happy Holidays from Rustyjr !"

I just want to wish all the readers of the Real Dirty Mets Blog a Happy and safe holiday whether it is Christmas of Hanukkah , Kwanzaa or Winter Solstice.

Since there hads been a dearth of Mets related news I came across this at Mlbtr.com . It is the calendar of remaining important off season dates :

  • January 5th – 15th: Teams and players file for arbitration. More than 150 arbitration-eligible players are still without contracts for the 2011 season.
  • January 18th: Salary arbitration figures are exchanged.
  • February 1st – 21st: Salary arbitration hearings are held. Most of those 150+ players will agree to a deal beforehand and avoid a hearing.
  • March 2nd – 11th: Players in their pre-arbitration years will have their contracts renewed by their team at any amount (as long as it exceeds 80% of their salary from the previous year) during this time.
  • March 28th: Deadline to release players with non-guaranteed contracts without having to pay them their full 2011 salary.
  • And with that said… HERE COMES THE INFAMY !!!!

Mets alumni celebrating birthdays today are :

Original Mets pitcher, Al Jackson is 75 (1935) . He has been a mainstay in the Mets organization serving in many capacities for over 30 years.

    Pitcher from ’66-’67, Jack Hamilton is 72 (1938) .

Middle reliever from the ’65 season, Dennis Musgraves is 67 (1943) .

One of the best center fielders to ever play the game ( he was a tad better than okay when he was with the Mets),Rickey Henderson is 52 (1958) . I always loved how he would refer to himself in the third person.

Back up third baseman for the Mets from ’89-’90,Tom O’Malley is 50 (1960).

Back up second baseman from the ’07 season, Ruben Gotay is 28 (1982) . I still don’t understand why many Mets fans wanted him to be the everyday second baseman. He had a weak bat and his defense was mediocre at best.

Sadly on this day the Mets lost two members of their family. Starting pitcher from the mid-seventies,Nino Espinosa in 1987 and back up first baseman from ’72-’73,
    Jim Beauchamp in 2007
    .

And while  you are at home today stuffing your faces with all that holiday food and drink while secretly hating that Chia Obama head that your son Jeff got you, Just be happy to know that there are just, 97 days until the Mets open the 2011 season against the Florida Marlins in Miami and 104 days until the Mets 2011 home opener against the Washington Nationals at Citi Field.

Mo Vaughn will be having Christmas at Ho Ho’s Chinese Buffet in Brooklyn New York ! Better keep your hands away from his egg roll !

Merry Christmas to all in observence this weekend, and a belated Happy Chanakuh to our members of the tribe as some of my hebrew friends like to say. I’ll start practicing my Swahili greetings tomorrow for the start of Kwanzaa, but in advance, Kwanzaa greetings.

Sandy Claus didn’t leave any gifts in our stockings this year but that’s OK since all we’ve had is lumps of coal to end our past few seasons. Maybe he can take those lumps of coal, apply appropriate pressure and soon we’ll have diamonds.
