Well, there would be my 2 starting pitchers. Not quite Garland and Garza.

    1. stickguy

if the 2 of them are actually “fixed” and can put in a full year, not really that far off.

especially in an “evaluation” year, and given how neither one cost any prospects.

I can live with Neise, Dickey, Pelf, Young and Capuano, with Gee on call as #6. should be enough to keep the team afloat, if the offense decides to show up this year.

      1. njstuckintx

Please re-read that last sentence of yours and ask yourself, realistically, if you think that can keep the team afloat. I’m not going all negative nancy on you, but there is a lot of hope involved, that’s for sure.

      2. fongy2

Afloat?…’til what? We’re rescued by the Coast Guard?
Are you really gonna believe Johan will be back after the Allstar break?…AND… Be Johan??…C’mon man!…..

        1. stickguy

I actually do not expect Johan back at all this year, and would not be surprised if he never comes back any better than John Maine.

If they get anything at all of value from him this year, it will be truly found money.

and “afloat” was maybe not the right word based on your responses. I meant that it is good enough to keep the Mets solidly in the playoff race. Good enough to get the job done.

          Better?

          1. njstuckintx

            Stated better, yes.

I like beer. And I already know it’s going to take a lot of it over the course of a season of seeing 7-5 and 8-6 games. (I’ve always preferred the 3-2 type games).

          2. stickguy

well, chicks like the long ball, so maybe they will like more runs no matter where they come from?

  2. kingman 26

Well, Olney has been tweeting this since November…he said we were about to sign him at the end of November…right after we signed Molina I think……the old blind squirrel thing….

    1. stickguy

an offer is nice. Not that it means they are vaguely close to signing him!

if nothing else, at least the “alderson is doing nothing” crowd has to switch their bitching. I am sure it is going to “he isn’t getting good enough guys”

  3. fongy2

Didn’t even know there was a “Alderson is doing nothing ” Crowd.
Well, now we just need him to sign the contract.
Nice pick-up on the previous thread re: my starting trouble on the Blyleven/Morris debate.

    1. fongy2

Seeing as hoe Beltre signed with Texas, if the Rangers would take back Ollie as part of the deal, would you trade for Michael Young?

      1. Ceetar

        To play second? sure..

        1. fongy2

          Good!……Thats two votes for.

          1. stickguy

how much is left on that nasty contract?

interesting idea though. Would certainly qualify as out of the box.

      2. njstuckintx

Would I? Does a bear do his business in the woods?

Would Sandy? (insert the sound of crickets chirping). I joke about Sandy, but I honestly cannot put a finger on him. The moves he has made are very good for a team in financial constraint. How is he going to proceed when he actually does have money at his finger tips? I know, I know, the A’s had a top level salary level back in 88 or so, but I’m still not sure how he is going to proceed.

And PS, that bye week is going to help a ton, no?

        1. fongy2

Well, I’d think Young is exactly the type of professional, come to
play everyday, no-nonsense, class act, leader type we could
          use.

          1. njstuckintx

I do like Young, and think he could be a fine fit for 2B. I would hope Sandy could pull that trigger, go over budget this year and then make it back the following year when there is a whole lotta moolah coming off the books yet not a whole lot to spend it on.

        2. fongy2

Absolutely!….And i’ll tell, as I’ve been saying since half-time Sunday, THAT was one of the 5 or so easiest to watch, no
stress Steeler games I’ve seen in 38yrs. I’d have been happier
if KC hadn’t folded against the Raiders….BUT hey maybe we
get lucky and the Chefs and Jets win this weekend.

Was discussing the Uggla signing and had someone say that Uggla was 1. below market and 2. better than what the Mets got Bay for.

I did a statistical comparison over 5 years not conting Bay’s 2010 but the 5 yrs before that up to the age 30 and Uggla’s 5 years also up to the current age of 30. This is what I got.

Jason Bay who turned 30 in 2009 From 2005 thru 2009 5 yrs Bay hit
    2815/AB .279/BA .378/OBP .515/SLG 155/HR 514/RBI 503/R 431/BB 738/SO

    http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/bayja01.shtml#2005-2009-sum:batting_standard

Dan Uggla who turned 30 in 2010 From 2006 thru 2010 5 yrs Uggla hit
    2927/AB .263/BA .349/OBP .488/SLG 154/HR 465/RBI 499/R 363/BB 760/SO

    http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/u/ugglada01.shtml#2006-2010-sum:batting_standard

Uggla’s contract averages out to $12.4M over 5 years.
Bay’s contract averages out to $16.5M over 4 years.

My question now is do you agree the Braves made out better contractually based on production than the Mets did when comparing the 2?

Also if Uggla’s contract is the highest average salary for a 2b in history can his contract still be considered below market value?

    1. fongy2

      Uggla’s a nice hitter BUT a -player @2B. Uggla’s not worth what
he’ll be paid and JBay, even if he returns to form isn’t worth what
      he’ll be paid.

    2. kistics

Don’t forget that Ugla is a middle IF (even with his horrible defense), so that should add more value to him compared to JBay.

      1. stickguy

well, I guess a good answer would be that if the Braves called up and offered an even swap, I would get it in writing before they wised up.

    3. Prismo

His defense hurts his value SO much; that can’t be stated enough.

      1. stickguy

after 3 years of slappy it looks pretty damned good to me!

        1. Prismo

Eh? Well Castillo has better defense than Uggla, though of course Uggla is the much better player overall.

But we’re comparing Bay to Uggla here (the pre-2010 Bay).

          1. stickguy

I know, but you were using his D to downgrade his value. I can’t remember the #s, but i thought (saber wise) it wasn’t really that bad recently. and his bat makes up for it.

you give me the choice and I take Uggla for sure, even if you guarantee they both put up 2009 #s for the next 3 years.

          2. TRS86

Fielding for his position was rated at -9, -7.6, -7 last 3 years so it’s still yuck but hey it’s getting better. Another 10 years or so and he should be close to average.

    4. TRS86

Nice question. Couple of things here. Defensive stats be damned Jason Bay is a very solid defender that makes the average play 99% of the time. Uggla has spent most of his career as a defensive butcher unable to make the average play on many occasions. I would also argue that Bay has been the pitch around guy on teams before where as Uggla has not, but back to the contracts. I think you have to put them into perspective. In history a LF ages a lot better than a 2B. Having Uggla at ages 31-35 if range decreases might be an issue. Finally, there is talk that Uggla would have gotten more on the open market. Fact is the Braves signed him to an extension, not to a FA deal. Usually price is held down in that situation.

      1. stickguy

Cheaper, huh? Gee, too bad the Mets don’t have a prime time MI they could try that trick with like the Braves do.

  5. metsfan4decades

Someone ping me when he actually accepts the offer.

If the Mets do indeed stay afloat with this pitching staff this year it will truly be the definition of ‘True Grit’. It sure will be fun to watch, won’t it?
No ace, just a collection of pitchers looking to prove themselves coming off injuries, coming off rookie years, coming off sophomore years, coming off journeyman-I-finally-proved-something years, coming off I’m trying-to-prove-I-belong-in-the-major years.

I’ll give them better odds than me holding that winning Mega Millions lottery ticket tonight.

    1. stickguy

It doesn’t bother me that much. The only part that makes me hold my breath is the coming off injury parts!

If Capuano and Young are both healthy coming out of ST (no given there of course), the rotation really doesn’t have any “reaches” in terms of ability. No 5th starter that really shouldn’t be in the league, no rookie making a 1st start, that type of thing. using numbers, everyone at least a 4, or a 3/4.

hey, 2 of your ifs threw 1 hitters last season. That should count for something!

      1. metsfan4decades

I’m not really criticizing. Just looking at it realistically.

It’s kind of one of those starting rotations where if everything falls right, it could make it very interesting.

We’re due for some good luck, right? Then again as a Met fan, I think the last time we had any kind of good luck was 1986 so we’re long past due.

        LGM!

        1. stickguy

it’s got a lot of upside potential at least. Better than the days when guys just sucked.

  6. stickguy

if you need proof that a team can win without a rotation for the ages, look at this list:

    SP Adam Eaton
    SP Cole Hamels
    SP Kyle Kendrick
    SP Jamie Moyer
    SP Brett Myers

that was the WS champion rotation from 2008. talk about motley, other than 1 young guy that had the run of his life.

not sure who made all the starts in the PS, but that was the 5 guys that started the most games for them, so I consider that the rotation!

    1. TRS86

You better have one hell of an offense when you throw that out there. That being said, take a look back to 2006 at one Mets rotation.

  7. kingman 26

““The Mets denied a report last night that it had made free-agent RHP Chris Young an offer,” according to the New York Post.”

    LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How can anyone take Olney seriously?

    Too much.

He just tweeted that reports say that the sun might have risen from the east this morning……

      See new post.
