Well, this will take some thought….but I’ll submit my list.

  2. stickguy

it must say something sad about me that I knew exactly who that was when I saw the picture, before I even scrolled down read the caption.

do you require a full 50? better take smaller #s too!

also, do you have any criteria? Does length of service matter? And I assume that you just mean while they played for the mets (otherwise Willie Mays gets to be #1)

    1. rustyjr

As many A’s you feel deserves the honor – can be any kind of player – scrub or star

  3. Mr North Jersey

I have to admit other than fixing the image of this Met I have no f’ing clue who Boisclair is nor have I ever heard his name before today.

    1. stickguy

He was late 70s, so not really before your time, unless you were otherwise occupied as a teenager.

I remember him because a friend and I used to try to mimic his stance and swing hitting balls in the backyard. he had a very wide stance IIRC. and other than that, pretty much sucked, but hey, back then the whole team did!

  4. Mr North Jersey

Man I don’t know if I can name 50 Mets?

My 2 favorite pitchers have to be Gooden and Cone

    I don’t know if I have a favorite closer?

My favorite position players have to be. Keith Hernandez, Howard Johnson, Edgardo Alfonzo, Strawberry, David Wright, Piazza, Beltran, Hubie Brooks

    1. stickguy

at least you get to use your own criteria for what “top” means.

Just looking at WAR for all time… Only Mantle (1956) had a better modern day WAR than Doc did in 1985. Tied for 31st best. Ever. There were a couple guys in the 20′s (Ruth, Hornesby) and then a bunch of 1800′s guys and 1910s…

But who knows… Why trade for Garza when we have the next Doc in Mejia? Sorry, couldn’t resist.

  7. RayLee

On behalf of those who were there in the very beginning……

    - Casey Stengel (as manager)

    - Gil Hodges (as a player)

    - Richie Ashburn (the twilight years)

    - Marvelous Marv Throneberry

    - Choo Choo Coleman

    - Nolan Ryan (ok, not in 1962, but he was already the Express as a Met))

    - Art Shamsky (more famous from “Everybody Loves Raymond)

    Memories……….

JETS WIN!!! JETS WIN!!! JETS WIN!!! AND THEY’RE GOING CRAZY LOL

  10. dckip

I did not include great players and Hall of Famers who played for the Mets if they did nothing as a Met. I did include Rickey Henderson on my list cause he had a real good year or two with the team. I did not include the follwoing as they did not do much as a player on the team, not counting what they did as manager or coach, but as a player… they are..

Willie Mays, Yogi Berra, Gil Hodges, Warren Spahn, Duke Snider, Richie Ashburn, Marv Throneberry, Willie Randolph, Rick Aguilera, Roberto Alomar, Jason Bay, Vince Coleman, Tom Glavine, Orel Hershiser, Jason Isringhausen, Mickey Lolich, Eddie Murray, Mo Vaughn, Gary Sheffield and Joe Torre….

  11. dckip

not that Marv Throneberry was a great player, but he was a great name …

  12. dckip

top 51 Mets all time- Piazza, Seaver, KHernandez, GCarter, DWright, Strawberry, Gooden, Koosman, Matlack, Leiter, Mookie, Dykstra, Ojeda, SFernandez, Cone, HoJo, Knight, JReyes, Staub, Tug McGraw, Darling, Mazzilli, Kingman, Nolan Ryan, Kranepool, Grote, Hundley, Lance Johnson, Gilkey, Clendennon, Harrelson, Pedro Martinez, Johan Santana, Olerud, Zeile, Ventura, Cleon Jones, Agee, Alfonzo, Backman, Carlos Beltran, Hubie Brooks, Rickey Henderson, Carlos Delgado, Elster, John Franco, John Milner, Randy Myers, Billy Wagner, Bret Saberhagen, and Frank Viola

  13. RayLee

I have always believed that the ’62 Mets were the inspiration for the movie Major League. I was only 10 years old, and a die-hard Yankees fan, until I realized that there was an entertainment element to baseball. I can still see Casey grumbling and pacing in the dugout as another MLB castoff showed why they were castoff……..

  14. Prismo

Rusty, I wish I could help here, but I’m afraid I’m just too young! While I’m sure I could come up with 50 names, and most would be reasonable, I think missing the first championship team and the mid-late 80′s team (well, I don’t remember watching it live), I can’t really fairly compare players. Looking forward to the results though!

    1. rustyjr

Then send me a list of your top 10

    2. hazmet

Hey Prismo – Happy New Year.

Try not to let that be a gate, Ultimate Mets Database is awesome if you just use the Roster tab and it lists every Mets player alphabetically and you can check their stats as Mets. You could probably rattle off the first 35 in about 5 minutes even without that.

Good luck with the upcoming semester :)

  15. hazmet

Random question: If the Mets cut either Ollie or Luis as part of signing Young, which one will get the axe first?

Just feel the rumblings over the past few days about cutting one of them loose is priming the pump to let one go as part of bringing Young on board.

    Any thoughts out there?

    1. stickguy

just a WAG, but Castillo because I think they are happy (if that is the right word) with the 2B options in house, and don’t see Slappy as offering a realistic chance of giving more production than the other guys floating around (any of whom could also be around beyond 2011).

Ollie though could still be needed (in theory) given that they are short of pitching.

but the key to keeping one is who they think still has a chance of being traded in ST, and sadly, that would probably be the enigmatic lefty SP in his 20s.

      1. fongy2

And Yes the list does say Rick Reed. The underappreciated steady but not spectacular #3 from the Piazza era. His numbers were better than most would think and I love the fact that he was a scab that had to prove himself every single day of his career.

    Love The Mets.

  21. metsfan4decades

O.K. – e-mailed my list. This was harder than I thought it was going to be.
I gave up putting in any kind of order of importance. My list takes into account intangibles (such as the McDowell keeping them all loose in the dugout in ’86) and some just b/c they were my favorite as a young Met fan from the ’69 team (as in Buddy).

I could not include the likes of Glavine, Saberhagen, Viola Bonilla, Benitez or Kent. I don’t care how much they might have contributed.

    Tom Seaver
    David Wright
    Doc Gooden
    Mike Piazza
    Daryl Strawberry
    Keith Hernandez
    Carlos Beltran
    Edgardo Alfonzo

    Jose Reyes
    Ed Kranepool
    Ron Darling

    Howard Johnson
    Jon Matlack
    Johan Santana
    Jesse Orosco

Shouldn’t Young and his losing streak be on this list somewhere?

        1. kingman 26

Well, I would say no…he was a good guy, and really did not pitch nearly that terribly—those were BAD teams….

    2. metsfan4decades

Ha! you had me going there for a bit.
