Time Is Running Out !!

” Hell i ‘ll even count him if he gets enough votes !!”

folks today is the final day to submit your list of who you think is the top 50 Mets of all time !

Like I have said many times in the past week the players you choose do not have to be a Hall of Fame caliber player.
You can list Tom Seaver as well as Tom Veryzer if you see fit. Darryl Strawberry or Daryl Boston – you decide !!!
Oh and if you have a hard time thinking of 50 then name me as many players as you feel fit !

Just send your list to rustyjr@realdirtymets. com by the end of the day to have your votes counted and hopefully I will be able to start the countdown on Monday.

Thanks – Rustyjr

Patience – but Ollie ranked in @#1 lol

In other news, Francis signed with the Royals… Does this mean Young will sign with the Yanks? That would make my day.

I really wonder what would make someone like Francis to sign with the Royals. I would understand if the Royals offered more guaranteed money than anyone else, but if it’s similar money why would you go to KC?

It may have been what TRS mentioned concerning guaranteed starting time, but they did already have 5 men in their rotation.

Right, it’s the thought that A) I get to no doubt be one of the top starters on the team. B) If I pitch well I will be in line for 2 things. A big contract the following year AND a chance to be traded to a contending team mid year.

This guy on MLBTR sums it up best:

I think this is a fantastic deal for both sides.

            For the Royals:
They get a much needed arm for their rotation to make it at least MLB caliber until the youngsters arrive. They can hope he gives them 10-15 good starts to start the year and give their fans some quality baseball to watch, and then trade him at the deadline for more talent while replacing him with whoever is ready from the prospect ranks.

            For Francis:
He gets to go to a team that will give him every opportunity to start even if he is a bit rocky coming off injury trouble. He will have a good defense behind him – assuming Aviles/Escobar/Getz/Ka’aihue is behind him most days – to make his numbers as a groundballer look better. He also has a very good chance to be traded to a midseason contender and so signing with the Royals may actually give him a greater shot at the postseason than signing with a preseason contender.

I read the debate above about starters and how we should stock pile. Both camps have a point. One the Mets need depth and should use a little cash in this market to get some bargains. However, guys like Young, Francis, etc are not coming to NY regardless of reasonable cash unless they are promised starts. They are more concerned about 2012 and beyond than this year alone.
So to think you can just buy them (of course you can if you VASTLY overpay, think 2 to 3 times more salary) to be an insurance plan and stick them in the pen? Not happening.
However, there are guys out there that may not have a choice that are still good options. I feel that Cap was one of them. Yeah he wants to start but if you look at his contract it appears the Mets promised him nothing as he has reliever incentives in there as well.
Two of those names floating around are Bush and Garcia. To me neither of these guys are in a prime position to demand anything. The problem is of course they are low risk low reward guys and I am not sure that is what Sandy is looking for. A guy like Busch could come out of the pen as the long man OR give you 175 innings of 4.50 ERA. Think of him as a RH Misch with a little more MLB success.

Well, They may work, or you could put Capuano in the BP, get 2 guys to be starters and if they flame out, roll Capuano into the Rotation or based on Spring training/performance, tell them, it’s yours to win.

Thinking of Cap’s contract and comments saying they’d like to sign Young to a similar deal lead to me to believe Young is trying to avoid having those relieve clauses in his contract.

And I’ve been one to push for stockpiling SPs, and you are right, it will definitely take an overpaying to get them here. But what’s 3 million vs. 1.5 in the long scheme of things? I’d think paying 1.5million in insurance (which that really is) would be worth it to not have the season completely implode with some injuries to already injury-prone players.

      1. TRS86

See to me it takes more than that. I have no idea how much you would have a guy like Francis/Young to come in and be a backup guy. Think how much they are costing themselves the following year. The only guys you get in those situations are guys like Cap, Redding, Bush, Garcia etc. Guys that really are not hoping for a big pay day the following year but glad they have a job guys.

All I keep coming back to is pitching is at an all time high premium in the majors lately.

I cannot remember where but I heard or read some comments on Keith concerning MLs, particularly pitchers. He said with the latest add ons of expansion teams, there are probably 1/4 of the pitchers on ML staffs that would normally not see the light of day on a ML pitching mound. He said it’s really affected the game.

With all the young guys in this country – and the international scene – I guess it’s truly only a handful that have what it takes to be successful in the majors. Either that or all 30 teams across the board are drafting and developing arms poorly.

We had Garcia, and he wasn’t quite fully recovered with his fastball yet, despite good breaking stuff. But he opted to become a free agent again instead of going to Buffalo, and had a pretty good year for the White Sox.

          1. TRS86

Yup, he had a good rebound year that year but then last year the problem is that he really just can’t go deep into games. 5 2/3 innings type of guy in the AL does not bode well for an NL transition.

  5. kistics

Is Washburn a Free Agent? Is he injured or something?

    1. TRS86

Basically retired. Gave the I want to pitcher here or nowhere speech last year and those teams chose nowhere.

      1. kistics

        Gotcha.

  6. kistics

    Has Duchscherer signed yet?

    1. njstuckintx

      Nope

      1. kistics

He looks like a decent candidate too.
