Another Name To Throw in the Mix?

Earlier today I mentioned the fact that Galarraga had been DFA’d and could be an intriguing option for the Mets.

This afternoon I bring you yet another DFA’d player that could find a role on the Mets.  This guy did not throw a no-no hitter so you may not have heard of him.  He is utility guy Steven Tolleson.

Who?  No not Hu.  Steven Tolleson.

Tolleson is a 27 year old utility guy that has experience at SS, 2B, 3B, LF, RF.  He is right handed and has shown to be a competent hitter.  In just 53 PA last season at the MLB level he posted

.286 .340 .408 .748 104

His minor league career gives a slash line of
.284 .374 .414 .789 in 2400+ PA with a line of .332 .412 .503 .915 last season.

Is it just me or does he resemble a young McGwire?

As usual Oakland will have 10 days to decide what to do with Tolleson.  I think it would be a strong move by the Mets to add him to the mix of guys competing for 2B and utility guy and should not cost the Mets any prospect of note.

Don’t you know that PA is only for people that like walks?

    How dare you. ;-)

LOL. I did not. Would you request a change?

To me it’s not about the walks as much as it’s hard to get a full sample of how much experience a player has based on AB’s.

Shhh we will speak of this no more.

I wonder if there is a limit on the number of potential 2B players one team can have.

    1. TRS86

I would think the Braves in the past would say no.

looks OK based on the numbers. Just wonder why if he was any good the A’s would ditch him?

and at this point, it seems like utility guy overload. Does he really bring more to the table than Turner?

    I never heard of him.
Would it be a major league contract? Or just minor league?

I got the impression Sandy & Co. were satisfied with the amount of guys/talent they’ve got vying for 2nd base come ST. I could be wrong about that though.

Since this was discussed in an earlier post:

    Prospect Watch: Top 10 shortstops
Orioles’ Machado tops list of young players on the rise

Wilmer Flores, Mets: The Mets sent Flores to full-season ball in 2009, at age 17, and while he wasn’t terrible, he didn’t stand out. So they sent him back to the South Atlantic League to start the 2010 season and he earned a midseason promotion to the Class A Advanced Florida State League. His best tool is his bat and he started to show some of the extra-base pop he’ll continue to grow into. He may not stay at shortstop long-term, but he might hit enough to be a fine third baseman.

Did anyone notice the tweet to the left:

    Ledger_NYMetsLedger_NYMets:
Alderson wants to observe Reyes during ST before making any moves. Reyes doesn’t want to negotiate during the season.

Well, there you have it. Sounds like an extension isn’t going to happen.

Reyes’ comment echos Pujols – who said the same thing.

or, Reyes comes to camp looking great and has a nice start to ST, and they sit down and hammer out the extension before opening day.

    2. Ceetar

nah, different. Reyes just wants to focus on baseball, but didnt’ say he wouldn’t talk. Very specifically said he’d rather focus and alaso said he wants to be a Met.

They’ll work it out in Spring.

I don’t really see what the big deal is for the players. the agent does all the work anyway. As long as both sides don’t try to play the media spin game, no one will ever know.

reyes and the agent talk about what he wants (stay in NY, what he thinks is reasonable for a contract). The agent talks to the team, and doesn’t have to talk to Reyes again until he has a deal to present, and that is a quick conversation.

key of course is keeping it from being negotiated in the media, and I don’t see that being a problem with Sandy.
