Updated: Hairston’s Deal is for the Majors; Mets Clear Two 40-Man Spots

Update: Tobi Stoner and Jason Pridie have been designated for assignment. Of course, if another team isn’t willing to incorporate either of these players on its team, the Mets can send them down to the minors.

Andy McCullough and Adam Rubin have reported on twitter that Scott Hairston’s deal with the Mets is a major-league deal (so he’s looking like the official 4th outfielder for the team).

The more important news here to me is that with Young and Hairston signed, the Mets need to clear two spots off the 40-man roster. Terry Collins says Ollie and Castillo and safe (UGH!) and will be in spring training…so who will be the two players left at the altar?

Take your pick from the 40-man here!

I would’ve liked to take a guess at the 2, but I have no idea. There’s no way there are 2 guys on that list who are worse than Ollie!

    1. Ceetar

two guys that ‘will be’ worse than Ollie taht should read.

but it won’t be him. silly to carry him this far and spark all the angry debate if they were going to release him in teh offseason.

      1. Prismo

Well you’re probably right, I just want to see Ollie gone. :p

        1. Ceetar

Collins has also stated they’ll both be in Spring Training. which doesn’t necessarily mean anything. maybe nothing.

          1. kistics

If it was the old regime, Jerry says Ollie would in the ST and Omar would release him the next day.

          2. Ceetar

no, Omar would say we can’t keep guys taht don’t perform, Jerry would say we just gotta get Ollie pitching like 2007. Omar would say he has to perform to earn his spot on the roster, Jerry would name him Opening Day starter AND the 8th inning guy. Then Omar would get overruled by Jeff Wilpon and would tell us that Perez will gain valuable experience and that we’re releasing Mejia because Perez’s spot on the 40man is more important.

  2. Ceetar

    Hernandez?

and Lutz? Pridie? someone who cleared already taht they didn’t report?

  3. Ceetar

    Does Paulino count?

  4. njstuckintx

I’d guess Hernandez and Pirdie. Or would they return one of the rule 5 guys?

  5. kistics

    Mejia?

    1. Ceetar

Could try to sneak Tejada and Mejia back down, since they won’t be on the major league team anyway. but dont’ think they’d clear.

      1. kistics

They have to clear the waivers even if they still have options?

        1. Ceetar

to be removed from the 40 man yeah, they have to go through some process. i don’t know the exact definition, but he’d be available to all.

          1. kistics

oh… didn’t know that.. i thought waivers process only applied to guys who were out of options.

then why is mejia on the 40-man roster to begin with? was this because of last season’s experiment? or were the Mets forced to put him on the 40-man roster?

          2. stickguy

because Omar was a moron, and put them on the 40 man before they needed to be.

You have to be put on the 40 man to come up to the majors (be on the 25 man), then they are stuck with him clogging up a 40 man spot, even if he is in the minors.

      2. metsfan4decades

I don’t think there is anyway they want to take that kind of chance with Mejia. I wouldn’t with Tejada either.

        1. stickguy

it would be insane to try. I don’t think (yet) that the new FO is insane!

  6. kistics

Who is Armando Rodriguez and why is he on the 40-man roster?

    1. metsfan4decades

23 year old RHP who was signed as an international FA in 2006.
Have no idea why he’s on the 40 man roster.

      1. metsfan4decades

Well, according to Inside Pitch in Dec of 2009:

his season is right-hander Armando Rodriguez. Short-season, full-season, it made no difference for Rodriguez who had a terrific season and is quietly the best kept secret in the Mets system. An older signing out of the Dominican Republic, Rodriguez is coming on strong and bigger things are expected of him in the future.
        ******************************

        In Nov 2010:
On the deadline day to place farmhands on the 40-man roster and protect them from the Rule 5 draft, the Mets added right-handerJosh Stinson, right-hander Armando Rodriguez, third baseman Zach Lutz and second baseman Jordany Valdespin Friday. Previously, right-hander Manny Alvarez had been added.

        Rodriguez, 22, went 8-9 with a 3.08 ERA in 27 starts for low-A Savannah.

          gotcha! thanks!

can you put up a link for the site?

          1. metsfan4decades

Here’s the link for the 2009 Inside Pitch one:

Here’s the link for the ESPN Nov 2010 snippet:

            ***************************

There wasn’t much more on either.
Last year, I downloaded the Amazin Avenue Annual. This is what they had to say about him:

The talk of Savannah over the last couple of weeks of the 2009 season, Rodriguez
dominated in his three starts in the South Atlantic League and could open
the 2010 campaign as the team’s ace. In receiving a number of inquiries this offseason
by a number of Mets fans, he is a must-see prospect in the organization.
With great size and a strong fastball-slider combination, he has the makings of
a future bullpen arm with some upside for more. However, he’s already 22, with
just three starts in full-season baseball and will need to finish the year in St.
Lucie to be considered a legitimate prospect.

          2. metsfan4decades

I read today where that AA Annual will no longer be free starting this year. They made a deal with a publishing house so if Met fans want to read it, we’re going to have to pay for it.

          3. Ceetar

Yeah, trade off for actually having it distributed to Barnes and Noble and what not.

          4. Prismo

Congrats to them, but I won’t be purchasing. Nothing against them or their book, but I just feel like I have the ability to look stuff up on my own and make my own judgments about players and whatnot.

          5. Prismo

I feel kind of bad that I made this post now, but they’re getting published and I’m not, so I’m sure they can handle it. :)

  7. Bryan

I think they can afford to DFA Tobi Stoner, he made just one appearance last year, and with the signing of young it’s more likely Gee starts in Buffalo and is an up and down swing man, pushing Stoner down in the pecking order.

If Hairston is presumed to be the 4th outfielder, then Jason Pridie is appears expendable, but I think he’s a guy Terry Collins likes. Luis Hernandez may be a good bet, with Hu, Turner, and Emaus i place.

Lutz is a possibility, but personally I’d like to see them keep him because he can really hit. I think now that the rule 5 draft is over they may be able to sneak Armando Rodriguez through waivers, because no one’s gonna give him a major league deal, and that move really puzzled me. They could try to do the same with Josh Stinson, but I think he’d get claimed.

    1. Ceetar

Do you know the rules? I mean, can they throw ‘em all on waivers and see who gets through?

Stoner definitely seems expendable. There are way too many IF on that list as well.

      1. Bryan

I don’t think they can do that. They just have to make a choice on who is expendable and who will make it through waivers.

    2. Bryan

I have no idea why the Mets put him on the roster to protect him from the rule 5 draft. He pitched well for Savannah last year, but has never pitched in the top three levels of the minors so I can’t imagine somebody keeping him on their roster all year. Personally, I like him, but not as much more than a 5th starter or solid middle reliever down the line.

I tried asking Adam Rubin for an explanation in an online chat, but I don’t believe he answered my question.

      1. Bryan

meant to be a reply to the Armando Rodriguez question.

      2. Ceetar

        He probably didn’t know why.

Maybe they like him more than that, and figured he’d be the easiest guy to remove from the roster now?

Also, they didn’t have a lot of time. Like they knew they were losing that one guy, so why not protect him instead? Maybe one of them knew something like Toronto was interested in him.

        1. stickguy

I think there was some buzz that Armando had a long shot chance at making the pen (him and that other guy).

so, given his age, entirely possible a non-contender team would snag him and see if he could handle a back end of the pen spot.

much easier to hide a guy in the pen than anywhere else on the roster.

    3. metsfan4decades

I would say Stoner is expendable also. If we reach a point this year where we would have saw him up, well, it’s 2009 all over again.

  8. TRS86

I would guess Hernandez and Pridie.

Could be Nikeaus as we have other catching options for camp that are just as likely to be the place holder for Paulino.

  9. kistics

So if you claim someone off the waivers because they were release from the 40-man roster, you have to give them a major league contract?

    1. Ceetar

      yes.

A team puts a player on waivers. Any other team can claim them ,same as in August, based on league and standings. If no one claims, the Mets could then do whatever they want with him, release, minors, etc. If a team claims, they can let that team have him, or work out a trade, or they could cancel the decision to put him on waivers and just keep him.(But if they do this they’re only allowed to do it once a year. I’m not sure when that ‘once’ starts though. January? April? )

So theoretically the Mets _could_ try to sneak these guys through, particularly the minor league guys like Rodriguez. Likely no one claims them, and worse case is they have to pull him back. The only drawback is if they think they have a better shot at working him through waivers later in the season they wouldnt’ be able to do so.

      1. stickguy

I honestly can’t remember if they have revocable (pull back) waivers in the off seaosn, or just during it.

I thought that if they put a guy on waivers now he was gone, but of course, I could be wrong (1st time for everything).

        1. kistics

          1st time for everything

ha! are the Philly fans rubbing off of you? :P

          1. stickguy

            bite your tounge, evil man.

        2. Ceetar

I think it’s the same waiver period, regardless. You’re only allowed to outright a guy to the minors once though, so I do believe Iggy wouldnt’ be able to be removed from the/any 40man again if he remade the team.

          1. stickguy

that I don’t know, but I do know there are some different rules for during the season vs. in the off season (like not having a 60 day DL to fall back on)

  10. stickguy

my guess (if they really insist on holding onto Castillo and Ollie) is Hernandez and Pridie.

These decisions are only partly about who seems most immediately usable (potentailly making the team), and mostly about who they think will get claimed by another team.

Of course, that only comes into play once you have no one left that you consider fat to be trimmed anyway.

Hernandez is nothing special, and dedundant with Hu and Turner floating around. Plus, you can always get guys like this off the scrap heap if you need one. And likely he goes unclaimed.

Pridie, is an older nice glove, never hit guy (even in the minors). No real value, and again, something you can always scrape up if you need it. He also likely goes unclaimed.

Stoner is probably more likely to get claimed as a flyer, and he at least adds SP depth (something the mets desperately lack).

And no way they take a chance trying to sneak a real prospect through. Especially one with ML experience already!

one thing tht helps now is many teams are in the same boat, with full 40 man rosters, so to pick up one of these guys, they have to cut someone else.

  11. kistics

Was listening to Ted Berg’s interviewing Peter Gammons and Ted brings up a very interesting stat.

Last season, the Mets gave over 1600 PAs to the guys with OBP under .300 which got me looking in BR. Here’s a sad but interesting stat. I looked at the NL East teams and saw how many PAs were given to players with OBP under .300. Qualifying PA was 100 PAs.

Phi 312 PAs, 2 Players under .300 OBP
    Atl 580 PAs, 2 Players
    Fl 521 PAs, 2 Players
    NY 1164 PAs, 5 Players
Was 1449 PAs, 5 Players (including Harris)

Oh and out of curiosity Yankees 167 PAs, 1 Player.

Good thing Hojo and Jerry are no longer with the club.

  12. oleosmirf

I would assume Jason Pridie and Luis Hernandez are next in line but in the event Hu falters or gets hurt, Hernandez did a decent job in his cameo and could theoretically backup.

Castillo really should be the next to go b/c 1) he has no possible role in the 2012 Mets roster, 2) he’s untradable and 3) the potential upside the other candidates bring is greater than what Castillo can offer us

  13. kistics

What’s wrong with the comment section?

(Updated: Pridie and Stoner are DFA’d)

  15. metsfan4decades

O.K. – who had Pridie and Stoner in the pool?

I’m betting we won’t lose either one. But if we do, kind of sucks since I’m willing to bet both Castillo and Perez will not be on the 40 man come opening day.

Wonder if they’ll discuss Castillo or Perez tonight on Mets Hot Stove? On in a few minutes and this week I actually remembered before 7pm…..

  17. kingman 26

Subtracting a guy like Pirdie is addition all around.

Terrible player who will just take time from a real prospect in Buffalo.

Hairston and Harris are actually a really good potential 4th and 5th OF combo.

  18. metsfan4decades

Didn’t hear anything we already didn’t know on Mets Hot Stove tonight.
Willie Harris interview by phone. Asked about that altercation with KRod, he said it was no big deal. He’s looking forward to being behind him closing out games and ‘doing that pointing thing to the sky right along with him’.

You know, every fifth time or so I read something about DWright or see a clip involving him, it’s something to do with all his charity work. Between that and his dedication to keeping in shape and doing everything he can to help his team, I don’t understand the ‘hate’ some Met fans have for him.

Here’s to him being a Met his entire career. He’d be the first since Ed Kranepool.

    1. hazmet

Spot on with D. Wright, I second the motion.

    2. kingman 26

      Right on on Wright.

Never stops hustling, a great guy off the field, and to me, probably the Met who cared the most about things last year.

A stand-up guy, an excellent player, and I also hope he remains a Met forever.

And yeah, smack me for saying it, but I love the guy for what he said to Bowa last year too!

      :-)

    3. darknova306

It’s all because of that AB with Murphy on 3rd. The ‘unclutch’ label was applied there, so now they only view him through that critical lens so all they see are his failures (which happen more often than not for all baseball players). These “fans” are what we call ‘idiots’.

      1. stickguy

BB is famous for guys getting a reputation (or tag) and it becomes almost impossible to shake it. Once everyone “knows” something, it becomes reality.

        1. darknova306

Quite true, unfortunately. Hurray for the herd mentality. People don’t think for themselves. That’s why this site is nice, it’s different from that nonsense. :)

  19. metsfan4decades

Watching 2010 Mets in review on SNY….

I didn’t realize Pagan played in 151 games. Granted I know not all were full 9 innings but that’s quite a feat for him considering he was the 4th OF to start the season, one of negatives about him was history of injuries and he also had a mild oblique injury somewhere in there.

I know some think we should have ‘sold high’ with Pagan but I can’t help thinking he’ll more or less repeat this year and we should be happy we’ve got someone like him who stepped up, especially considering the bargain he was.

    1. stickguy

he was the starting CF with beltran out. Just Jerry didn’t realize it.

      1. TRS86

how long is forevere? That might bee too long.

        1. Mr North Jersey

forever is as long as Ollie is a Met

          1. darknova306

Which is hopefully only a matter of weeks at this point…

          2. stickguy

less than a month to ST.

I figure it shouldn’t take more than 2-3 days of ST to realize Ollie is hopeless. Give Castillo a full week maybe.

and if Castillo is starting the season at 2B, I am boycotting the season. A man has to have some kind of principles.

          3. darknova306

Early last season I started boycotting Ollie’s appearances. Anytime Ollie comes in to pitch in a game, I turn the TV off. Done. I’d walk out of the ballpark if I was there and he came in. He’s trash.

          4. Mr North Jersey

How deflating would it be to Ollie to have a stadium empty out when he is announced to come into a game?

          5. darknova306

That would be awesome! I can’t imagine he’d manage to pitch any worse than usual, but it’d still be hilarious.

          6. Ceetar

My experience with it last year is that more people way pay to come and boo Ollie than they’d come to cheer Niese. so there’s that.

          7. TRS86

Sorry Ceetar but I don’t see anyone spending their hard earned cash just to boo Ollie.

          8. Ceetar

I dunno. Last year I observed a bored lackluster crowd refuse to get into games even when it was going well. Later in the game Ollie came in and suddenly the crowd came alive.

certainly seems like more people are into the hate, and I think a lot of the comments around the blogosphere support this attitude.

Even if it’s not Ollie, it’ll be someone else. Acosta, or another reliever. Which is why you can’t release a guy for PR reasons. Doesn’t help.

          9. TRS86

Sometimes you can if the hate towards that player actually brings the mood of the entire stadium down and makes people want to stay away.

As to your point that the crowd got more into booing Perez that does not mean that they paid good money to come to the game in hopes that they would get to boo Ollie. My guess is that most of them were die hard Mets fans who still came to the game because they love the Mets. The getting to boo Ollie was just a bi-product of that.

    2. metsfan4decades

Sorry guys but I’m really confused. I’m still seeing that post where I put those two links in. I’m not seeing a problem with any post of the nesting within this post.

I’m using Firefox, if that makes any difference.

      1. stickguy

not sure about this site, but sometimes you still see your posts, even though they are in moderation, but no one else sees them.

        1. metsfan4decades

          Ah….thanks.

Sorry all if I screwed this post up. Still not really sure what caused it. I’ve referenced links before in some of my responses and don’t remember seeing complaints like this that it hosed everything else on down.

          1. TRS86

It’s tricky. But here is how it went down. When you post more than one link in a post it sometimes throws it into moderation as spam (best way is if you are going to link twice then do it in separate post). When a post is in moderation you can still see it. What is weird is that you can also reply to it. So basically you are replying to a ghost post. When you replied to your own post that no one else could see wordpress could not recognize the nesting. Weird, you did nothing wrong other than replying to a post in moderation.

          2. metsfan4decades

Got it. I did not know that. I’ll avoid posting more than one link in a response in the future.

        Per MLBTR

The Mets have agreed to sign left-handed reliever Tim Byrdak to a minor league deal, according to Adam Rubin of ESPNNewYork.com (on Twitter). Mike Silva of the New York Baseball Digest first reported the deal.

the more, the merrier on MiL contracts.

at least now the ALderson “critics” (and they are out there) can stop crying about him diong nothing, and not getting any players, which was a common theme back in December.

Now I guess they will have to switch to cracks about being a small market team, and not spending enough on good players!

ALthough if you look at the pick ups, and concede the budget cap, he has actually signed some pretty good looking talent (certainly plenty of upside). The Mets might just have a “real” team this year (as in, 25 men that all have a role, add some value, and legitimately belong in themajors). As opposed to what they were rolling out at times last year.

Lot of upside, a lot of incentive laden deals, a lot of MiL contracts. Can’t complain much. Granted I wish they had the ability to spend a little more to get a Rauch and such (which was discussed yesterday), but overall, no complaints yet. We’ll obv. have to wait to see how it translates to the field.
