Boy Oh Boyer !! The Mets Sign Blaine !!!

" Another arm for the pen !"

According to ESPN.com’s Adam Rubin, the Mets have signed right-hander reliever, Blaine Boyer to a minor league contract. As part of the deal , Boyer will get a invitation to the Mets big league camp during Spring training.

Boyer, 29, was non-tendered by the Diamondbacks last month. In 54 appearances, he posted a 3-2 record, a 4.26 ERA  and 5 holds. I kinda like this signing by Sandy. It seems like there will be a open competition for the loogy role, and the more left handers brought to camp, in the less likely Oliver Perez will stick on the roster.

Hey it’s better than Jorge Sosa lol

Another feel good story for about half a dozen games early on before he fell apart….

I have lost track of all the minor league signings – and handful of major league ones, Sandy has done so far. I think just about everyone got an invite to ST. Sure is gonna be crowded on that bench in PSL.

Now, just to see a DFA Perez, DFA Castillo.

Who will Sandy sign next? Keyser Soze?

ps – we’re officially freezing our a$$es off in NY this weekend as it will be a low of 8-12 degrees the next few days. Send some of that TX warmth up here please.

I will. Just do the reverse May through September.

my son has to go back to school tomorrow in Ithaca, and he just told me that the forcast low for one day early next week is -11 (yes, negative 11). thought you had to go to Alaska to get that low.

Meteorologists are forecasting a major storm along the I-95 corridor middle of next week.

          2. stickguy

NP. He goes back tomorrow (well, today now!)

  3. stickguy

well, at least all the people claiming Sandy isn’t signing anyone were proven wrong.

and Rusty, not sure why you mentioned bringing more loogy competition in for Ollie, when based on that picture he is quite obviously a right handed pitcher.

also, I like collecting as many cheap experienced BP arms as possible. They need them in Buffalo too, and it is good to have a supply of spares. If one guy starts breaking down, bring up whoever is hot at AAA!

SI_JonHeymanSI_JonHeyman: congrats to #jays gm alex anthoppulos, who just unloaded 1 of the worst contracts in baseball. can the #mets hire him now?

You’re not funny, Heyman. And we don’t need AA. Heyman must have forgot the Omar era is over. Maybe he needs some Ginko….

    1. TRS86

While I don’t appreciate Heyman’s needless twit, I mean tweet, I still don’t get why in the hell the Angels did that move.

Told you guys the other day it would have been a good time to check in on their interest because they were likely to do something crazy. Well… Check.

      1. stickguy

thought the same thing, that was the Mets shot at getting real talent back for Beltran while saving significant money. dang.

and it could have freed duda!

    Rusty buddy,

“the Mets have signed right-hander reliever, Blaine Boyer ”

I know Sandy is thinking outside the box but the Right handed Boyer would be way out of the box for LOOGY.

      Sorry I was tired lol

      1. TRS86

LOL, no problem at all buddy. Just pulling your chain.

    From Eric Simon:

“Pending physicals, the Rays have added Johnny Damon ($5.25 million) and Manny Ramirez ($2 million) to help offset a bit of what they lost when Carl Crawford broke north for Boston. My gut tells me that Manny kinda stunk last year, but the data says he had a .382 wOBA and a 138 OPS+. Damon actually did have a down year in 2010, but he had a .376 wOBA in 2009 and a .373 wOBA in 2008.

In other news, the Mets will introduce Chin-lung Hu, who has a career .227 wOBA, at a Citi Field press conference on Wednesday.”

    1. stickguy

so, another no so subtle snide comment at the mets I see.

Of course, no other team picks up a MiL guy to compete for a back up MI spot that does not have a booming bat. Of course you need to compare them to a guy that was signed (for $5mill) to be a starting OF, and another guy that is a FT DH now. makes perfect sense to me!

Mets had no actual use for either guy, unless you wanted Manny to be a PH bat only, which I doubt he would have been interested in.

Actually, the guy they should have tried to sign was Andru. Plays CF, and still hits vs. LHP.

      1. TRS86

Jones was for sure looking for more AB’s than the Mets would provide. Also, how much more would you have to pay him to play for the Mets in Citi instead of the Yanks?

        1. stickguy

didn’t say they were going to get him. Just that he would have been a great guy to target. I guess though that Hairston is fairly similar at this point.

Though Andru is likely to put up monster numbers in that band box, just hitting vs. LHP.

    2. oleosmirf

great moves by the Rays. Manny should thrive in a DH role…

      1. stickguy

        agreed.

and a perfect example of filling holes witha ST commitment when there was not a viable looking LT option there for you.

the opposite of Omar. He would have signed the “best” guy on the market to a (forced) LT deal, like he did with Ollie and Castillo.

although I guess he did try this (badly botched) with Alou.

The reason this quote caught my attention is that Eric Simon is a passionate Mets’ fan and runs one of the better Mets’ blogs (Amazin’ Avenue – An Unofficial New York Mets Blog) on the internet.

The two major stories in baseball:

Angels trade for Wells: I always assumed the Angels to be a smart organization but then they keep doing stuff like this. This is GMJR all over again. Seriously no salary relief? I will bet right now that Napoli and Rivera more than make up for his production at 1/3 of the total price just for THIS year let alone saving them 80M total. Did Omar get traded to the Angels?

Rays sign Damon and Manny: Instantly go from not likely to compete to having a chance if things break right to be right back in the hunt. If they can find a closer and a 1B on the block through trade they will be set. Love the move.

    1. njstuckintx

“Tony Reagins said the fact that Wells is only under contract through 2014 (when the outfielder is 35) “was attractive to us.” To use Carl Crawford (a rumored Angels target) as an example, the Red Sox are paying Crawford $62.25MM between 2015-17, including $21MM in 2017 when Crawford turns 36 years old.” – MLBTR

Ummmm, I see the rationale, but that line of thinking seems a little off to me.

      1. TRS86

That’s BS. Think they would not have chosen Crawford if they could have? This was a pure panic move that will backfire incredibly bad.

        1. oleosmirf

its an absolutely terrible move by the Angels but at least Wells had a pretty good year last year, then again everyone hits HR in Toronto…

          1. gategem

The move may have been made for ST business reasons. Their hope is to increase interest in the ballclub to increase incoming revenue sources from attendance, merchandising and media sources. I read the following at an Angels’ blog and it could explain the move:

“As I understand it, like the Rangers’ TV deal for $1.6B, it could only come into effect after the current contract with Fox Sports ends. For the Rangers, their current deal ends in 2015, so the new deal was probably negotiated as an extension of sorts with Fox. The Angels have a current TV contract for $500M over 10 years til 2016 with Fox, so any deal would have to wait to come into effect after then anyway.
The thing is, though, that the Angels (Arte) can take equity loans out of their current $500M TV contract, and use it as subsidies for player salaries now. Since the Dodgers seem to be on the decline, Arte must believe that the time is now to invest in top FA players to field a championship Angels team, and cut away at the LA Dodgers market.
If there’s a $4Billion TV deal in the future, any money he spends now (even if there are losses or loan repayments) would be considered investments towards that $4B deal, and the Angels would be the top dog in LA, maybe even the west coast. Shrewd business gamble.”

        2. stickguy

I agree that is the likeliest scenerio. I just can’t beleive that the Jays weren’t prepared to kick in serious money to make this deal happen, but if the Angels didn’t ask, their problem.

The Jays FO and owners must be dancing in the streets over this.

Jeez, they could have had Beltran for a couple of their spare prospects, paid the same this year, and not been on the hook for 3 more!

          1. njstuckintx

Who knows, maybe they are interested in Beltran now… :D

  8. kistics

His numbers against RHBs were very good in 2010. Under .600 OPS.

  9. stickguy

so, with this signing, if he makes the pen and Boof does also, can we say that the pen will come out throwing “BBs”?
