Fred Wilpon Hinting At Releasing Ollie If He Doesn’t Produce?

New York Mets owner Fred Wilpon held a rare media session this evening. Andy Martino of the NY Daily News posted some of his quotes in his article. In it Wilpon spoke on his outlook for 2011 and his desire of Minaya coming back to work for the Mets in some capacity but he also spoke about the team’s finances. In doing so he seemed to hint that he has some people that have not produced in the past that he is carrying but that maybe at some point he will no longer carry them.

“Our payroll is approaching $150 million. We’re not at $48 million. We have a high payroll. It’s true, we have some people that have not produced in the past and we’re still carrying that, and maybe we won’t carry it, but we have a high payroll.”

So when he says “we have some people that have not produced in the past and we’re still carrying that, and maybe we won’t carry it” is “that” a reference to Oliver Perez?

He’s referring to overpaid, useless dead weight. Hello, Ollie (and don’t forget Castillo). I think the day I’m looking forward to the most in 2011 is when Ollie is finally no longer a Met.

no, that describes ollie. Castillo is a different situation. And I am president of the dump castillo club.

I kind of wonder exactly how far out of touch with the reality of the team (roster, organization, finances) Fred really is at this time. especially the organization stuff (which includes the minor league players and player development).

if nothing else, the decision to dump omar and go through the process of interviewing new GMs must have been an eye opener!

I don’t think this is ‘new’ news. Sandy hinted the same thing himself with his comments of having to earn jobs in ST. I have to think that means:
    - Castillo has to outperform all others – and not just marginally – to win the 2nd base job.
    - Perez has to pitch like he’s never pitched before – consistently very good – to win a starting 5 job. If they’re trying him out for a BP spot, he has to be lights out to even be considered. IMO though he’s auditioning for a starting job only. I really don’t think the mindset is a BP spot.

It’s not new news. For supposedly hating the guy, some of you really love to talk about him/them.

You know Ceetar it really amazes me how you can say how some of us really love to talk about him/them.

This from the guy that could not watch a game without finding fault with something Jerry Manuel did and made sure every1 knew how bad the manager was.

Well, this is not fully reporting what happened.

Ceetar was there and right after the above exchange, he clued in Freddie, who of course agreed with Ceetar’s analysis, and Ollie has been offered a 2-year extension, so, in addition to satisfying his overwhelming desire “to pitch” and “be in shape” he will also now be counseling Met minor leaguers on how to arrive in camp in shape, how to consistently show the organization you want nothing more than “to pitch,” how to deal with being “treated unfairly” by the team, and how to generally just be the belle of the ball when it comes to all things Met.

Actually, they’re already taking my advice, which I offered back in late August, of keeping him until 3/31/10 and seeing if he can contribute anything.

      Booya.
